Oh, Hell Yeah: WaterCar Testing New "Chick-Magnet" System

So it is true what they say, then. Lady-buttocks are drawn to amphibious vehicles as if by a force of nature. Maybe it's the name of this new automatic model, the WaterCar Python Edition. Skip to the 2 minute mark if you're only interested in the action.

2008 New York Auto Show: Brady's Final Thoughts From NYIAS

Brady Holt at the New York Auto Show

One question that's always asked of an auto show attendee is what car they liked most. My answer to this question is the Kia Optima.

It's not that I think it's so fetching, it's just that the face-lifted Optima was the only production vehicle unveiled at the show that I had not already seen online.

This probably doesn't matter to readers...

2008 New York Auto Show: Mitsubishi i MIEV, i MIEV Sport and Concept-cX

Mitsubishi showed off its line of extra-green subcompacts: the i MIEV (say "eye-meev") electric, the i MIEV Sport concept and the Concept-cX clean diesel.

Mitsubishi promises a production i MIEV, which is based on Mitsubishi's existing Kei-class car in Japan, but it probably won't appear in the U.S. It's being tested in a small commercial fleet right now and should be widely available for 2010. The standard Mitsubishi i has gained popularity thanks to its unusually spacious interior, achieved by moving the engine to the rear of the car and pushing the occupant compartment forward...

2008 New York Auto Show: Mitsubishi i MIEV

Mitsubishi iMIEV

Even though Mitsubishi's i MIEV press conference wasn't until today, that didn't stop the manufacturer from driving its prototype electric car around the Javits Convention Center yesterday, parking it in front of competing manufacturers' "green vehicle" displays.

In the photo above, the i MIEV is hanging out at the Toyota Highlander Fuel Cell Hybrid display.

With the silence of the car's motor and the background noise of near-constant press conferences, it seemed as if every time you turned around you'd find that the i MIEV had snuck up from behind.

The i MIEV is based on the gas-powered JDM Mitsubishi i subcompact, which is currently on sale in Japan...

2008 New York Auto Show: Interiors

I don't know why, but I think the Dodge Journey hates me.

Before I met it today at the New York auto show, I knew Dodge's new crossover primarily from pictures. I didn't get a chance to poke around inside while it spun on a platform at my local show in Washington, D.C. And it didn't make a negative impression in pictures...

2008 New York Auto Show: Best-Looking Volvo Ever?

2009 Volvo XC60

Direct from Geneva, the new 2009 Volvo XC60 compact SUV made its North American debut at the New York auto show. The two pre-production models on display are the same vehicles shown earlier this month at the European show, sporting no U.S.-spec changes. So, Volvo calling it the best-looking Volvo ever in addition to the safest Volvo ever should no longer come as a surprise.

But with Volvo styling having drifted far from stodgy in the last decade, that's saying a lot...

2008 New York Auto Show: Sssh, Don't Tell Anyone

2008 New York Auto Show

I walked past a certain sign posted at the entrance to the New York auto show floor at least a half dozen times, each time trying not to look too suspicious. If found out, I risked losing my job and suffering the humiliation of being turned away from the glory of whatever new car I had been heading toward.

No, I wasn't smuggling drugs. But according to the posted sign, I simply wasn't permitted to attend the auto show...

2008 New York Auto Show: Kia Concept Pre-Launch Party

2008 New York Auto Show: Kia Concept Pre-Launch Party

In case anyone would fail to realize that an attractive compact coupe would be aimed at young people, Kia saw fit to preview its new concept partially under a sheet at Manhattan's trendy Exit Art gallery, surrounded by bizarre sculpture, lots of wine and low lighting.

The car will be formally unveiled in the less-hip Javits Convention Center at Kia's NYIAS booth tomorrow along with a "significantly updated" Optima. -- Brady Holt, Student Journalist

2008 New York Auto Show: Brady Attends the BMW M3 Convertible Launch

BMW M3 Convertible at the New York Auto Show

We've all seen the BMW 3 Series Convertible before. We've also seen the BMW M3 Coupe. A Photoshop novice could have shown us the Convertible M3 even if BMW hadn't already shown it to us in Geneva.

But that failed to prevent BMW from covering the car with a sheet before its official North American debut at a press conference today in New York, or sharing once again a bounty of information on the latest M3...
