What you see here is a special-edition version of the already rarefied 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG. This European-spec car, painted a matte carbon gray with a matching finish on its forged wheels and standard carbon-ceramic brakes, is part of a 45-unit run.
It's undecided exactly how many of the 45 will come to the United States, AMG's Rob Moran tells us, but whatever the number, they'll come along with the other 2013 SL65s this November. Our Editor in Chief returned from driving the regular SL550 in Spain and declared it the most structurally rigid, best-handling (ah, well, maybe that's not quite what he said... I skipped lunch) open-top car he has ever driven. Adding more engine can only be a good thing, then, and as before the SL65 has a biturbo, port-injected, 6.0-liter (5,980cc) V12. It's rated for 621 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 738 pound-feet of torque at 2,300 rpm. That's the same torque peak as the old SL65, but this new car has dropped 254 pounds, according to Benz, so it should be quicker. It now weighs in at 4,299 pounds -- not light, mind you, but not bad for a retractable-hardtop convertible with a V12 in its nose.
Claimed 0-60-mph acceleration is 3.9 seconds, but we expect that's a conservative number, as a 2007 SL65 we tested turned in an identical performance.
