Hennessey Performance Engineering Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hennessey F34 717.jpg

John Hennessey is using this turbocharged Hyundai Genesis Coupe to promote his Tuner School -- a 14-week program designed to launch its students into the world of aftermarket tuning. Based at his Texas facility, the school covers engine building, forced induction and dyno testing -- all of which makes us wonder why there's no power claim for this single-turbo Genesis Coupe the company built.

Engine-bay.jpg Throttle-body-detail-717.jpgThe RMR crew pulled it off. Rhys Millen told us on the show floor that he drove this midengine Tau-V8-powered Genesis Coupe into the trailer. If you've been following our coverage of this car (here and here) you know that, like most SEMA cars, this one was cutting it close.

2010 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec at the 2009 SEMA Show

genesis-rspec-717.jpg

Hyundai has released an official photo and specs on its Genesis Coupe R-Spec. Not surprisingly, it looks just like the R-Spec that debuted at the Chicago Auto Show earlier this year.

To refresh your memory, the Genesis coupe R-Spec is a de-contented version of the 2.0T Track model. It's designed to offer a lower price while maintaining all the essential hard parts like the limited slip differential and upgraded brakes. It's prced at $23,750 and goes on sale any day now.

RMR's Mid-Engine SEMA Hyundai Now With Bodywork

Millen RM 460.jpg

If you've been following us here at Straightline, you'll already know about the V8-powered, mid-engine Hyundai Genesis Coupe that Rhys Millen Racing is building for the SEMA show.

We've given you a pretty thorough walk-through of the technical aspects of the car in our initial post back from September. Then we gave you an progress report as the powertrain started coming together for real and various body pieces were finalized.

Now RMR has released this rendering what the finished show car should look like and added a few details, such as the output of the 4.6-liter Tau V8 donated from a Genesis sedan and modified to produce 500 horsepower. Further Hyundai and RMR say that the five-speed sequential transmission is geared to allow a top speed of 182 mph.

Look for photographs and more information on the car live from the SEMA show, which begins November 3.

SEMA Preview: RMR Mid-Engine Hyundai Genesis Making Progress

Overall.jpgLast time we saw RMR's mid-engine Hyundai Genesis Coupe its 4.6-liter V8 was merely mocked up where the rear seats used to reside. Now, only weeks before its debut at the SEMA show, much progress has been made, but there's much work remaining. The four-inch exhaust -- including tiny catalytic converters -- dominates the engine bay. Headers were being fabricated while we were there.

SEMA Preview: Hyundai Genesis Coupe by GReddy

greddy-genesis-1600x850.jpg

The 2009 SEMA show is less than a month away now, so now would be a good time to prepare yourself for the onslaught of aftermarket project cars that will clog the intertubes for the next several weeks. Some will be ghastly, others will be tasteful and the rest somewhere in between.

This Hyundai Genesis Coupe is one such example. It's appearance doesn't make you want to jump into the driver's seat, but the spec sheet is a little more promising. GReddy is working with Hyundai to make it happen and the goal is a 350-horsepower version of the base 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

A new turbo, larger, front-mounted intercooler and cat-back exhaust highlight the engine modifications while the chassis will be upgraded with fully adjustable coil-overs, upgraded GReddy brakes and Volk G2 wheels.

Save for Hyundai, September Sales Mostly Sagged

September09Big7graphic_550px.jpg

The expected slow September after Cash-for-Clunkers August came to pass, and you can get the full, brand-by-brand analysis on Auto Observer. Hyundai/Kia was the major bright spot, as the company continued its record-setting 2009 pace: It sold 55,134 vehicles -- a 26-percent year-over-year increase from September 2008.

Ford saw its year-over-year sales decline slightly, but was still encouraged by its third-quarter results -- sales were up 5 percent compared to 3rd-quarter 2008 and incentive spending decreased by an average of $1,400 per vehicle. Plus, the company's market share was 15 percent for September compared to 14 percent a year ago.

Among the exceptions for September was BMW, which saw its first year-over-year increase of 2009, selling 19,175 vehicles for an increase of 3.6 percent. The other manufacturer on its way to a record year, Subaru, recorded steady sales for September. It sold 14,593 vehicles for an increase of 1 percent (citing a 63-percent increase in Outback sales and +24% for the Legacy); Subaru is up 10 percent for all of 2009 with 158,421 units sold. Volkswagen saw a 1.5-percent year-over-year increase for September, selling 17,358 vehicles.

Finally, respectable Boxster and Cayman demand kept the Cayenne from dragging down Porsche, which sold 1,581 vehicles -- an increase of 8.4 percent.

2011 Hyundai Sonata to Get D.I., Turbo Versions of 2.4L Engine

2011_hyundai_sonata_5.jpg

Inside Line has learned that Hyundai plans to offer a direct-injected version of its 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine in the U.S.-spec 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The engine, we're told by sources inside Hyundai, will be rated at 195 horsepower -- a significant bump over the 175-hp rating for the 2.4-liter in the current Sonata and more than Honda offers in the four-cylinder Accord EX.

In a nod to both fuel economy and performance, sources tell us there will also be an optional turbocharged engine, most likely the D.I. 2.4-liter with power in the neighborhood of 240-250 hp. This will make the Sonata one of only four turbocharged sedans in the midsize market along with the Subaru Legacy, VW Passat and VW CC.

It will also make the 2011 Sonata Hyundai's second turbocharged model behind the rear wheel drive Genesis Coupe 2.0T, which uses a boosted 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 210 hp.

Hyundai Bails from 2009 Tokyo Auto Show

tokyo_auto_show_image.jpg

Just over three weeks ahead of the press days for the 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, Hyundai has announced it is dropping out. This means that, save for Lotus and Alpina, showgoers will see cars from only Japanese domestic brands.

Automotive News quoted Toyokazu Ishida, manager of international exhibitions for the Japanese Automotive Manufacturers Association (JAMA), as saying that the phone call to cancel came on Friday afternoon. JAMA said that Hyundai would be stuck with $122,000 in nonrefundable fees for its 4,300-square-foot exhibit space, but of course, that's nothing compared to the millions it would have cost Hyundai to transport cars, set them up and staff the space during the show.

Behind the Scenes at IL: Hyundai Genesis Coupe vs. Mazdaspeed 3

Did you see the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe powerslide in our recent comparison test with the Mazdaspeed 3? Well, here's the full director's cut version with Senior Road Test Editor Josh Jacquot at wheel of the Hyundai. Yes, this is why you buy a rear-wheel-drive car.

After the jump, watch the "other" version of this video in which the Genesis Coupe doesn't want to cooperate. You'll hear commentary from Jacquot as he strategizes with videographer Evan Barthleman. Enjoy.

Video: 3 Commercials for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Were you a resident of Seoul, these are the commercials for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata you might see. There's plenty of English (and in one of them, Italian) used in the scripts so you won't get confused. If you haven't gotten your fill of the redesigned midsize sedan from yesterday's photos, these should put you on the road to Sonata overload.

Two more videos after the jump.

More Photos: 2011 Hyundai Sonata

hyundai_sonata_5.jpg

Updated with additional photos, 9/16/09, 11 AM PST

Hyundai apparently formally unveiled the 2010 Sonata in Korea earlier today. The company has launched a microsite for Korean consumers, and that's where we turned up most of the photos here. The redesigned Sonata is on sale there now, and we know it will arrive in the U.S. sometime in 2010 as a 2011 model. We also know that Hyundai is planning a Sonata hybrid for this generation.

In addition, there's a press release floating around, so it appears the Korean-spec model will have a 163-hp version of Hyundai' 2.0-liter Theta inline-4 engine. And evidently, the new sedan is 190.0 inches long (+ 1.1 inch over the 2009 model) with a 110.0-inch wheelbase (+ 3.6 inches). It's also 72.2 inches wide and 57.9 inches tall -- nearly identical to the '09 Sonata's measurements.

More photos after the jump.
