IL Track Tested: 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec

2012_genesis_flipper_hyundai_blogflipper.jpg

Inside Line tests hundreds of vehicles a year. Cars, trucks, SUVs, we run them all, and the numbers always tell a story. With that in mind we present "IL Track Tested," a quick rundown of all the data we collect at the track, along with comments direct from the test drivers. Enjoy.

The 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is instantly recognizable. For this model year Hyundai ditched the blobular look that the Genesis Coupe debuted with and replaced it with a sharp, angular face and a hood with cutouts that you can see from a mile away. Hyundai also added an additional 64 horsepower and 52 pound-feet of torque for a total of 274 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque.

Last time we tested the previous iteration, a 2010 Genesis Coupe 2.0, it hit 60 in 6.9 seconds (6.6 with rollout) and went on to a quarter-mile of 15.0 @ 91.8 mph. How did this one do?

Video: Hyundai Shows Off Drift Skills at Road Atlanta

Hyundai drift.jpg
Hyundai showed up at the Formula Drift event at Road Atlanta with the 2013 Hyundai Genesis Drift car, its 650-horsepower 4.1-liter V6,  a will to win, and a whole mess of video cameras. (How programmed we already are to accept GoPros all over everything these days, huh?)

Hyundai eventually lost to Frederic Asabo in the Need for Speed Scion TC. They may have lost the competition, but the video they've put together -- featuring interviews with Rhys "Mad Skilz" Millen (fingers crossed that nickname dies) and slick suspension shots -- makes up for it. At least insofar as we're concerned.

Videos: 2012 Toyota Prius C and 2013 Chevy Malibu Earn Top Safety Pick Rating

prius crash.jpg

Earlier this week the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crowned three new vehicles "Top Safety Pick." (An increasingly large group that sort of recalibrates the gauge for "top".) Included were the 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco, the 2012 Hyundai Azera and the 2012 Toyota Prius C.

All three vehicles scored passing marks in front and side crash tests, as well as rollover and rear-impact collisions.

Crash videos on the Malibu and Prius (the ones you really wanted to see crashed) after the jump.

BMW, Hyundai Working on Engine Alliance?

2013_hyundai_genesis_eng_ft_214121_1600.jpg
Being a competitive carmaker is an expensive game. The public gets tired of old cars very, very quickly (3 years then refresh on 4 followed by an all new model by 8 is the new standard) and they get bored with old engine technology just as quickly.

And then there's the government interference. Each time there is a new mandate for new fuel efficiency regulations or lower emissions, engineers have to go back to work.

The List: Last Month's 20 Quickest-Selling Cars

2012_toyota_priusc_f34_ft_227121_815lead.jpg

One factor that's influential in determining whether a model is one that dealers won't be able to keep in stock on the lot is, of course, demand. If buyers are lining up 'round the block to get their hands on a certain model, this frenzied enthusiasm will likely have an impact on inventory levels.

The other factor concerns supply. Brand-new models frequently make the list of quickest-selling vehicles because with these models, manufacturers often choose a cautious approach when it comes to supply; production is grown slowly and carefully with the intention of making sure that the products aren't plagued with glitches.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Ancillary Gauges: Do They Work for Ya?

Hyundai Genesis 2.0 Turbo secondary gauge cluster.jpg

Generally, we’re big fans of gauges. And sort of appalled at how few gauges – dedicated gauges, with their own spot in the instrument cluster or dash – there are these days, even for many purportedly performance-oriented cars. Virtual gauges you can summon on some multi-function display only partially count; they’re somewhere between real gauges and idiot lights on the functional and aesthetic spectrum.

Hyundai and Rhys Millen Show Off 2012 Formula Drift 2013 Genesis Coupe

35720_1_1.jpg
For 2013 the Hyundai Genesis Coupe road car got a serious refreshening. The new car drops the bubbly face and awkward cut lines for a gaping hexagonal grille, sharp headlights and a crazy hood. Frankly, it made Rhys Millen's current drift car look weak. That can't happen.

So, for the 2012 season, Rhys Millen Racing and Hyundai have hooked up on an all new, 600-hp drift car based off of the 2013 Genesis Coupe. The new car is painted Hyundai blue and not Red Bull livery this year.

"I'm pleased to have Hyundai's ongoing support for the 2012 season," said Millen in a statement. "This begins the fourth year of our racing relationship with Hyundai and we want to continue to build upon our success in both developing and racing Hyundai's race-proven products."

The RMR Genesis Coupe raced this weekend in Long Beach and will make its next appearances at Road Atlanta in May, Palm Beach in June, Wall Speedway in June, Evergreen Speedway in July, Las Vegas in August and finally in Irwindale in October.

2012 New York Auto Show Video: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

2012 New York Auto Show: 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport

santafe_f34.jpg

Hyundai actually unveiled two vehicles at the 2012 New York Auto Show: There's the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, which seats five and uses exclusively direct-injected four-cylinder engines. It goes on sale in September.

Then there's the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. It has a 4-inch-longer wheelbase and is 6.5 inches longer overall. It seats seven and uses a direct-injected 3.3-liter V6. It's Hyundai's replacement for the Veracruz, which will end production when this larger Santa Fe goes on sale in January 2013.

With these new crossovers, Hyundai will more aggressively go after "families with two or more kids," John Krafcik told the crowd at Javits. This is one of the few demographics the company has let slide in recent years. The Veracruz is a slow seller and the Entourage minivan is long gone.

The new Santa Fe siblings should rectify that, as they appear to offer the same combination of style, performance, features and impressive EPA ratings that have made the Sonata and Elantra so likable.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Brochure Leaked

Hyundai leak.jpg
Hyudai did the best job they could trying to contain the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe but, as happens more often than not these days, the new SUV has leaked.

We were treated to a teaser rendering of the new SUV -- slated for debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show -- earlier this month. The new "Storm Edge" design language was well received and could make this SUV stand out in the class as strongly as the Sonata does in the midsize sedan segment.

In the leaked brochure we see the three-row 2013 Santa Fe will get cooled seats (likely just the front), sliding second row seats, Bluelink and a naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Currently the Santa Fe is available with both a 2.4-liter four and a 3.5-liter V6.

The List: 10 Models with the Highest Proportion of Female Buyers

lead crv.jpg

What do women look for in a new car? It can be a perplexing thing to try and determine. Of course, generally speaking, they want the same things that men want -- a vehicle that's a match for their budget and lifestyle. But in practice, there are certain models that seem to appeal primarily to members of the fairer sex.

2012 New York Auto Show: Hyundai Renders 2013 Santa Fe

2013_santa-fe_prf_hyundai_ns_9998_031212.jpg
If there's one thing I like more than engine names (TigerShark anyone?), it's design language names. This is Hyundai's rendering of the new 2013 Santa Fe which features Hyundai's new "Storm Edge" design concept which "captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm."

We say it captures the strong and dynamic images created by a small crossover SUV with a new hexagonal grille and unlikely-for-production skidplate. The front will look slightly different in production trim, but the profile above should be very close to the real thing.

Hyundai didn't reveal pricing or powertrain configurations, but the outgoing model came with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder hooked to a six-speed automatic and started at $23,550. Hyundai says that the new SUV will deliver "good fuel economy."  In 2WD trim, the 2.4-liter 2012 Santa Fe returned 20/28 according to the EPA.

We'll have more on this one from New York in just a couple of weeks.

The List: 2012 Geneva Motor Show -- 4 Lookers From the Showroom Floor

  emerge-e_prf.jpg
With lingering economic malaise continuing to cast its pall, Europe is certainly overdue for a pick-me-up. Enter the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. While it typically doesn't offer as many high-octane debuts as some rival events, this show is a favorite stop for European design houses interested in flaunting their artistry. As such, while it might not be the biggest auto show, it's quite often the most interesting from a design perspective.

2012 Geneva Motor Show Video: Hyundai I-oniq Concept

Hyundai ioniq concept.jpg

The Hyundai i-oniq concept, an electric sports hatchback that hints at future powertrain possibilities for the Korean automaker, was unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show. The concept, which gets a long hood and a low-slung look, also previews the evolution of the brand's "fluidic sculpture" design language.

Check out our photos from the show floor here, and our video after the jump.

2012 Geneva Auto Show: Hyundai I-oniq Concept

hyundai-ioniq-f34-1.jpg

This is the Hyundai I-oniq, a four-seat, two-door concept that previews the future of the company's vehicle design. At least that's how Hyundai is spinning it here in Geneva.

Hyundai calls its design philosophy "fluidic sculpture" and this is the latest rendition of it. Not sure how it differs from the old version, but it makes for a reasonably attractive two-door hatchback type thing.

And like all concepts these days, the I-oniq sports an alternative drivetrain. The one in the I-oniq combines an electric setup with a range-extending gas engine similar to the Volt. Even if this concept has little to do with an eventual production car, it's still interesting to see that some manufacturers see some validity in the idea of using a gas engine as a generator.

2012 Hyundai Azera Commercials Get Wes Anderson Treatment (with BTS)

 Wes Anderson Hyundai.jpg

Wes Anderson is the hipster-darling director/writer/producer of such films as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, the Life Aquatic, the Fantastic Mr. Fox, the Darjeeling Limited and, of course, Bottle Rocket. He's also the director of two news commercials for the 2012 Hyundai Azera which debuted during the Oscars.

The ads "Modern Life" and "Talk to My Car" (especially this one) have a very Wes Anderson feel indicating that Hyundai hired the guy they wanted and let him have his way. Good things happen when you hire people you trust and leave them alone and these clever spots are proof of that.

This is not the first time Anderson has done commercial work. Previously he's done ads for American Express and AT&T.

The List: 4 Used-Car Picks From J.D. Power's Most Reliable

genesis lead.jpg
Reliability isn't exactly the sexiest topic you can raise on the automotive front. Still, it's obviously an important attribute to consider if you're shopping for a car, especially if you're shopping on the used market. Enter J.D. Power and Associates: Each year, the company releases a study that shines a light on the models that are least likely to cause headaches when it comes to dependability.

This study is called the 2011 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, and J.D. Power recently released the 2012 edition; it looks at problems reported by owners of three-year-old cars and trucks (from the 2009 model year) over a 12-month period. The company's analysts pore over the data to spotlight those models and makes with the smallest number of reported problems -- fewer problems equals more impressive reliability.
