Chinese automaker Geely did indeed place a bid to buy Volvo in August, the company's CEO, Gui Shengyue, confirmed yesterday in an interview with the Financial Times. Geely is still thought to be the only serious bidder for Volvo.
Two sources close to the company estimate the size of the bid at just under $2 billion, which falls into the line with the $1.5 to 2 billion Ford is reportedly seeking. FT reports that Geely also wants to buy all of Volvo, which would seem to work well, since Ford wants to sell its Swedish subsidiary in one piece.

Although there has been more news coverage about the pending sale of Saab to Dutch supercar maker Koenigsegg, the other Swedish automaker, Volvo, is still up for sale, too. And Automotive News cites a report from Dagens Industri, a Swedish business newspaper, that Chinese automaker Geely is the only company to submit a serious bid for Volvo thus far.
More details on the sale are expected next month, according to the report, and parent company Ford still plans to have everything wrapped up before New Year's.

Last year Geely stole the show in Beijing with its long and lean GT concept. It was over the top in many ways, but at least it was an original design.
This year, the GT is back, but it's flowing lines have been interrupted by the realities of production. There's a full interior this time around and a much larger greenhouse to open up more passenger room. Unfortunately, the new shape makes the car look awkward and unfinished. If Geely wants to make a name for itself with a flagship coupe, it's going to have to channel a little more of the concept into the finished product.

You may have had enough of the auto show circuit after last week's show in New York, but there's one final international show left before summer.
The 2009 Shanghai Auto Show will not only have several production cars bound for the U.S. like the 2010 Porsche Panamera and 2010 BMW X5 M, it will showcase China's growing home market brands like Geely, Chery and Great Wall.
As is typical of the Chinese shows, we'll be seeing a colorful array of model names that make monikers like Brougham and Bonneville SSEI seem quaint. So far we've seen previews of the Chery Karry Viewsonic, Great Wall Cool Bear and the Dongfeng Fengshen. Check back next Monday for more cool name and additional coverage from Shanghai.

Maybe you remember the name Geely? It was the first Chinese car company to show a car at the Detroit auto show in 2006. The display vehicle was a pathetic attempt at a sedan that left many wondering if it was a serious car company.

I hate this kind of stuff. Maybe because I'm a graphic designer it hits just too close to my heart.

When I first saw this I said, oh no, not another Chinese rip-off. But that's not the case, as Geely has struck up a deal with Manganese Bronze, the owner of London Taxi, to produce the iconic London Taxi, and it will be sold in London. The TX4 will have a 2.4 diesel engine and is reported to have a Euro 4 rating.
