...and you people thought alpha-numeric names were bad? Porsche has just dumped the working "Cajun" name from their new small SUV and replaced it with "Macan."
Porsche intends to build this Q5-based, sub-Cayenne SUV at the Leipzig plant starting in the beginning of 2013. It will compete with the Mercedes GLK, BMW X4 (and X3) and the Infiniti FX. You'll note that all of those cars have alpha-numeric names that are far less awful than Macan.
Macan, BTW, is derived from the Indonesian word for "tiger" and "combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics -- core characteristics of this new all-terrain car."

...and in French it means "my can", as in an empty soda can or food can, a cheap object meant to be tossed or recycled.

Macon is a city in Georgia.
Between the names Cayenne, Cajun, and now Macan, Porsche seems to be going southern.

Is it short for Jamaican?
Maybe the change is because the German pronunciations of "Cayenne" and "Cajun" are not sufficiently different.

Kudos to Porsche for using vehicle names. Hey Lincoln and Caddy, see it can be done and people will still realize which brand the cars come from. Also, this will be the "cheapest" new Porsche available and I'm guessing will be a blast to drive.

I prefer the MB method of naming vehicles, based on "class"--B, C, E, G, M, R, S, and the three-letter additions.

If its priced similarly then I wont even test drive the other cars. I love cars with real names with meanings. Thank god for Porsche once again. Hope this comes in 6MT or 7MT.
Give me 7MT and under 50k and you ahve my bank roll Porsche.
