Video: GM's Solution To Traffic Problems of the 50s

 50s traffic.jpg

 Besides making fine automobiles, GM in the past had a habit of making some fairly impressive films explaining the world of transportation. Previously we've seen them demonstrate how a differential works and why you need one. That video was made in 1937 and should be required viewing for every car guy.

This time GM takes on a more political topic: Traffic. GM tackles traffic problems in major cities (you'll see Boston, LA and New York) by arguing that parking regulation and public transportation are the best ways to cut congestion. "Talking, writing or wishing about the downtown traffic jam will not solve the problem. Bad as it is today it will be worse tomorrow if more and more cars are forced to jam their way into the heart of the city. Our best hope for solving the problem is getting shoppers and commuters back into busses. Then, instead of merely moving vehicles, we'll be moving people!"

Your boss won't notice you watching this for the next 30 minutes.

You'll see Chicago too. Just past 2 minutes is a shot of LaSalle Street looking south to the Board of Trade.

However, to quote Molly Ringwald from Sixteen Candles, "I loathe the bus". Fortunately for me I only need to ride the train to get to work.

I think that it would be a 1957 film, not 1937. The cars on the film are 1950's design. The GM Old Look transit busses in the film was not introduced until 1940 in itself.

Correction, I read the article wrong. The diffential film was made in 1937, this YouTube file was uploaded from a film made in the 1950's. I aoologize for the mistake!

Busses = kisses
Buses = the vehicles people ride in

The city center I live near is dead. No one travels there anymore unless you're a gang member, patronizing a strip club, or need to visit city hall. The downtown "mercantile" class doesn't exist unless you are a politician with your hand out for more bribes, or a drug dealer.

Fifty years ago we had three private urban bus companies, retail, and a vibrant private sector, now there are none. In their place we have an inefficient and bloated government run transit system transporting drug addled patrons between their public housing, social service agencies, and to their methadone clinics.
