Video: Driver's Dash Camera Pays for Itself

 Dash cam.jpg

Every day I see the same guy on my commute into work. He's got a green Ninja 250, one of the new ones, an orange safety vest with reflective tape and reflective tape on his helmet. He's also got a GoPro on his helmet and one mounted to the back of the bike. He's a good rider; I've seen him get out of some tricky spots (busses in LA care not for motorcycles), and while a lot of people are hooking up GoPros to catch their canyon carving, I think this guy's doing it for insurance purposes.

Sort of like this driver whose dashcam saves him from an annoying/expensive insurance claim.

Awesome! I love the look on her face when he points to the camera.

@subytrojan:
And insurance claim *disowned*!

Haha, awesome!

I had basically the opposite happen to me. A few years ago I was at a really deep, blind intersection and rolled forward after coming to a complete stop. I couldn't safely proceed so I stopped again before entering the intersection, and the car behind me hit me. The guy actually accused me of backing up into him, luckily neither his nor my insurance company believed his story and put him 100% at fault.

I hope criminal charges are filed.

I'm getting two Go Pros after seeing this.

brn,
The driver is an idiot. But criminal charges? You do understand what that means right.

compressor says:

I should say the driver is an idiot and dishonest, but criminal charges are not warranted.

Criminal charges could be filed if this is considered intentional. Assault with a vehicle.

mrtatertot says:

I would say criminal charges are warranted since they appear to be trying to commit insurance fraud.

I guess it depends. I was assuming it was a scam; back up into someone and claim they hit you. If that's what happened, criminal charges are warranted.

If it was just a stupid move, then I take back my suggestion. That's also a case where they're likely to admit goofing and the need for a camera is reduced.

Reviewing the video again, it does not look like a scam. Um, nevermind. :)

Man - I may leave my iPhone mount on my windscreen and shoot video. Where I live it'd could make a pretty cool video blog anyways.

Very lucky he had his video as their expressions indicated they were going to blame him until he points at the camera.

You can't file criminal charges (or ones that will actually stick) for a crime that wasn't committed. If he kept his mouth shut about the camera and waited till they actually tried to blame him and go through with insurance fraud, then possibly yes. But, there is no way in the court of law that you could prove criminal intent given they will say they did't look backwards when they went into reverse for the parking spot.

Secondly, insurance fraud would be a difficult charge. Unless, they tried to claim injury, they insurances would just issue blame accordingly after the video was distributed. Now, her insurance may choose to drop her.

Beautiful. Good thing that man wasn't moving. Backing up on a busy road is something only... well... Not sure if I'd call them drivers.

I'm just wondering if this went to court, would this be able to be used as evidence at all? It seems like it borders on invasion of privacy.

@ frank908 - there is no reasonable expectation of privacy outside your home

frank908, don't know about Europe, but in the US photographing (or videotaping) occurrences in a public place (city street) is perfectly legal. Admissible, without question.
