We are still incredibly in the dark on this one. These are the best spy photos we've seen to date on the 2014 Chevy Silverado and we still know virtually nothing. We're starting to see how the new almost best-selling truck will shape up with a wide, flat front that almost looks like the C/K from the mid 70's (except with a bumper). We've seen retro sports cars hit the mainstream, is it time for a retro truck? All of this, of course, is pure speculation and that camo could be hiding anything.
What we do know is that this truck has to live up to an extremely high bar. The current Silverado is an exceptionally good truck -- especially with the 6.2 -- that still looks fresh. Beyond that, the Ram 1500 has coil springs and a great ride paired with a strong motor, Ford is doing good things with EcoBoost and V6 technology and Toyota, well, they still exist in the truck market. Chevy's also going to have to design this one to work with the tightening fuel-economy regulations that kick in in 2017.
See anything noteworthy we missed?

They didn't even bother with the lower fascia under the bumper! Sign of a low-slung aero package?
To my eye, Chevy hasn't strayed from the 70's look of square since the 70s. But a flat hood/fender will finally differentiate Chevy from the Dodge-wannabe look.

I would love to see a return of the old Blazer with the removable half roof.
What great camping vehicles those were.

Are the SUV's coming out as 2014 models also? Very happy with my 2009 Silverado with the 6.2

The first word that came to me when I saw this photo was "retro."

The side mirrors extend out pretty far; they must be part of a tow package. Picture two shows what looks like some kind of underbody shielding and maybe it's jst me but there looks like a LOT of space between the front wheel and fender.

That third picture does give it wierd proportions and make it look like there is a large gap in the front wheel well but who knows what the tongue weight is on that trailer that seems to be making the rear end squat. My assumption is that the front end is missing whatever airdam they would normally have there under the bumper. The wheels look nice!

As the owner of '75 Chevy truck, I don't see anything in these pictures that reminds me of mine. I suppose it's got a front end, cab, and bed, and doesn't look all feminine and curvy, but that's as close as I get. If they were to return the 1500 to the size of a mid 70's truck that would be swell. I can't get over how massive my Dad's newer Silverado feels. I would also like a return to the days of two-tone paint jobs, in colors! That would be awesome. I would take mine in Sunset Orange Metallic/Dark Silver.

csubowtie: Don't worry, the government will force that wish to come true here soon! to meet fuel economy standards trucks will just get smaller!

The only thing (which is noteworthy to me, since you're the writer) is that the decade to which you refer is the '70s, not the 70's. Dates are expressed with the apostrophe FIRST (replacing the "19" or "20"), followed by a lower case "s" with no additional punctuation. Not only should every writer know this, but everyone else shoud, too.

mycatcroaked: Since you appear to be the grammar nazi, I would suggest you work on your spelling. Should is spelled with an "l", so if you're going to critique someone elses writing, you should <-- (with an "l") make sure your writing and spelling is spot on as well.

full disclosure: I'm a GM employee. I have not seen the new prototypes yet. But based on the pictures I'd say Mike is right on one point; you can't tell anything much about the front end yet, not even if it will resemble a flat front style.
In the first pic you see the fender liner hanging down in front of the tire so either that is the wrong liner or ther wrong fender/ bumper. Also, whatever the front bumper ends up looking like, it will definitely be lower than in this picture. You can see the bumper brackets off the frame below the apparent bumper in this pic and it is way to high to meet the new bumper height requirements for trucks. So there is a lot missing here, maybe not even a grill under the camo.

current trucks are huge. there is no reason why they need to be so big. hopefully this one gets a little smaller (especially in height)

The exterior design of the current silverado has been an evolution
of the design from the early 80s. The Ram's appearance is it's own
completely tracing a similar evolution. But what would you know?
You drive a 4 cylinder hairdryer.

Forget the exterior, can they dynamite the interior and start from scratch. We need comfortable seats and way less plastic. Ford and Dodge have much better looking interiors. And want to pick up sales? Try to improve the fuel economy because you don't have to wait for 2017 - once the Iranians are bombed and oil goes to $175 a barrel, truck sales will dry up again (unless GM can figure out a way to improve the mileage).

First thing that came to mind was Trailblazer from looking at the front. Could just be that I don't like the look of that vehicle or the rest of the chevy lineup the last few years. Really hope GM follows the trend of other truck makers with a COMPLETE redesign. I'd even be up for a retro or traditional boxy shape of the 90's models. Obvious that front end has a long way to go as the wheel wells don't fit and you can see the bumper hangers hanging down. As for current Silverado, it looks nice enough on the exterior but the interior has to be the worst in the industry (even compared to the disaster inside the Tundra). I'll be in the market around 2014 so will be watching this one close! Thanks IL.
