2012 Detroit Auto Show Video: Chevrolet Code 130R Concept

Code130R_DetAutoShow.jpg

Chevrolet showed off a couple of concept cars in Detroit yesterday, both of which are aimed at a more youthful demographic. The first, named the Code 130R Concept, has an intriguing BMW 1 Series/Chevy Camaro love child vibe. As it's just a concept at this point, GM's aiming for 150 hp and 40 mpg on the highway.

James seems to be quite taken with it. What say you?

The 130R is more appealing to me then the 140S. The 140S looks more like the now discontinued Mitusbishi Eclipse. The 130 R does remind me of a cross between the BMW 1 series coupe and a baby Chevy Camaro with a larger greenhouse. The fact that is has RWD is even more appealing.

Love the style but I would rather 250-270 HP and 35 MPG highway/25 city. Love the greenhouse and short overhangs. Wheels to the edge and tons of visibility out the windows...sweet driving gods with a good engine that could be fun.

It's a RWD small car what's not to like? The world has enough FWD cars.

@mini: I thought exactly the same thing 1 Series+Camaro mashup. Really, this is more a spiritual successor to the original Camaro than the actual Camaro is. A smallish 2+2 coupe (with an actual upright rear window no less!) affordable to younger buyers. Sounds like a winning combination to me.

A nice 4cyl Turbo with an optional 300 hp 3.6L V6, both available with 6-speed manuals could very well be a hot ticket with 25-35 male crowd.

3.6 lite v6? That's a big, heavy engine. Why not a 300 hp 2.0 turbo?

I hope this goes into production without another concept in between, unlike a certain other small RWD coupe...

Both of these concepts are beautiful, and I think Chevy should build both of them.

Signed,
A 23 year old male who's waiting for a car brand to come along that really speaks to me.

I like it. I mean, the rear could use a little more work, and the front kinda reminds me of the red Angry Bird in that screen grab, but it looks cool. I think there should be more affordable rear wheel drive cars like the MX-5 and the new Subaru/Toyota twins. I think if they could make it comparable to those, it could be a hit among us who actually like to drive. (Also, bring on the big greenhouse!! I would love to actually be able to get into and see out of it!)

I like the 140R styling better, but have to admit I'd never buy a FWD car unless there is no alternative. This does look better than a 128i IMO.

Does anyone know if the ATS platform could be downsized and de-contented enough for this car?
And, does anyone else think it would look better as a Nomad? The thing I like least about it is that awkward 2-door sedan roofline and barely-there trunk thing it has going on. As a 'shooting break' type of car, it wouldn't cannabilize (many) Camaro sales. It even has the little lip at the back of the roof like a Nomad. Please Chevy?

love the profile of the car; front and rear views, not so much. small, rwd = win.

This car is a no-brainer. Just do it, Chevy; you have the drivetains already, so just do it. My grandsons will love it when it finally comes out in 2018, when they will be out of college and making those big bucks. (My granddaughter will get it handed down to her, by her brother, in 2023.)

What's wrong with the target demo just going with a Camaro(just to stick with Chevy stuff)? Or is it the MPG thing? Even with that, the V6 is... cheapish, and doesn't get that bad of MPG.

This one definitely looks better than the 140, which just looks like a fancy Civic to me. Still, not really something I'd be interested in. I'm not sure what they're considering "young people" but odds are at 23 I'm part of it. Maybe I'm just weird. Ok, well, I know I am, but still.

I'm not sure about being affordable enough, but Cadillac was talking about a small Alpha-based roadster so it sounds like it could be downsized enough.

Um...ever driven a camaro? It's like being inside of a tank. Poor visibility, heavy, huge, plodding handling and overall just a dank cave of yuck. This reminds me of a modern 2002 (what the 1 should have been). Sadly, it's bigger than a 2002 and an e30 too. Oh what I'd give for a 4 door RWD sedan like an e30 today...today's tech in a car that size. Yummy.
