Cadillac pulled the sheet off the new ATS, which has aspirations to challenge BMW in the luxury sedan segment. With 270 hp under the hood and rear-wheel drive, it's certainly starting out with promise.
Check out the video after the jump to see what Alistair Weaver thinks, as well as how to correctly use the word "boffin."

270 hp? I figured it would get the 300+ hp V6 from the CTS. It's a good looking car though, but I really don't like that second body line at the C-pillar, the one coming fowrwards from the top of the tailights. Yuck. Still waiting for a V8 powered ATS-V.

I'll gladly try one out. I'm still leaning BMW but i'd be happy to give this thing a spin. If it matches a 3 series in driving dynamics and it's cheaper, win. So far that combo hasn't come around. Sadly.

I'm loving the engine options that have been rolling out across the car industry over this past year. We're finally getting smaller, lighter turbocharged engines. It only took about 25 years for it to happen. However, I'm still buying a 2013 Mustang GT this year, I'm just glad these turbo engines are becoming available.
As for the ATS, I'm really pulling for this car to help inject more life into GM. Unfortunately, because of "perception of value" it'll need to be as good as the 3 series while beating it in price. They just might be able to do that, though.

i thought it went like this:
ATS VS 3 Series
CTS (next-gen) VS 5 Series
XTS VS 7 Series
Not like
xTS VS 5 Series

@sgtmajson:
The XTS is for old people. It didn't cost a lot of money to make that car and GM didn't want the early bird crowd moving over to Lexus. It was not and is not meant to rival the big German sedans.
Caddy's luxury liner will be built on a new frame that's all its own and debut in 2014. It's yet to be named.

@csubowtie, It is getting the V6 as one of its engine choices, (3.7L, 318 hp).
