2012 Detroit Auto Show: Acura NSX Concept

IMG_1190.JPG Details on Acura's pending NSX are vague at best, but here's what we know for sure:

  • It will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected VTEC V6 and two electric motors.
  • Utilizing "Sport Hybrid" Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive, the NSX's powertrain will individually adjust torque to each front wheel.
  • A dual-clutch transmission packaged with one of the electric motors will deliver power to the ground.
  • The car will come to market inside of three years.

Honda Motor Company President and CEO Takanobu Ito said the new NSX will be developed at Honda's research and development facility in Ohio. The car will also be built at a Honda assembly plant in that state.

The NSX production car, should it retain the same dimensions as the prototype, will be slightly smaller in every dimension than an Audi R8. It rides on a 101.3-inch wheelbase.

That is one purdy car. That front end just draws the eyes in.

Finally, an Acura to get excited about!

Will it have a stick available at all?

I wanted to love it, but, overall, it's kind of bland and generic looking. The rear deck lid will become a nice birdbath after a rainstorm. The front end looks a bit like a ship's prow -gotta do something about that bird's beak! The rear isn't too bad though, but more detailed LED multi-colored light pipes would be more interesting and useful i.e. yellow color for turn signals, and a crisper definition for the red, with perhaps a "stepped" 3-D look.
If the price is competitive and the performance stellar, it should do quite well. However, there will be many VERY good competitors in the marketplace in this segment by the time that this comes out.

As a previous NSX owner, I always thought the Audi R8 looked like what a current NSX should look like. Apparently Honda agrees because this "concept", especially the front end, is very derivative (and that's being generous) of the Audi.

Looks a bit too much like an R8 in my opinion as an overall shape, the rear is more Aston One 77 style, but not bad though, looks pretty futuristic...

dannyzrc says:

This isn't fat in the middle the way the R8 is (overlong between the passenger cell and rear wheel, what the blade is trying to hide).

Also, it's 3 electric motors, one for each front wheel and one in the transmission.

Exciting, I'm a much bigger honda fan than porsche fan, but you could call this a 918 spyder for the rest of us. =D

This car is eye catching. Bet it will be something the R8 can never be: well built.

Better looking than the R8 in my eyes but I just don't get the appeal of the R8 beyond it's styling. Audi "quality" for 100k just seems hard to fathom. The dealer has an R8 spyder for 180k right now. The interior materials are on par with 35k A4. And you have to deal with their inept service staff.

Nice to see the NSX coming back to the market. The front beak is not something I favor. I like the front design of my '91. Cannot Honda/Acura come up with an original new jaw dropping front design (not copying the other marques, where is Mr. S. Honda when we need him)? I confess that I am a hide-away headlight fan and using that feature opens many design possibilities. Concerned that the rear pillar will cause a large blind spot...the original has a very good 335 degree view from the driver's position (maybe cameras will alleviate the problem). Rear deck is too flat (agree with the other commenter...a rain/water catch basin).
Before building the New NSX...Honda/Acura Design/Management talk with NSX owners for smart features that will leave the other marques astonished.

I'm in love! That NSX concept is sharp. It's the best looking thing Honda's designed in years. It's about time Honda started to refocus on performance vehicles and sports cars again. I'm so sick of seeing Honda produce nothing but boring hybrids, sedans, and SUV's. This is a breath of fresh air and a good start. I look forward to seeing more performance oriented cars vehicles from Honda... So Honda, hows about getting to work on a new S2000, Integra, or Prelude? Not all of us can afford an NSX ya know!

This car is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! Way to go Acura on making an amazing NSX successor!!!! My only complaint is there wont be a manual transmission. All in all I am impressed with what Acura brough to Detroit. Now I guess time will tell on how much the production version will look like this concept.

coolb944 says:

This is a very nice, ultra modern looking high performance sports car. Not as past-styling-reliant as a Ferrari or Porsche, and should appeal to the same crowd that likes the R8, which I also find to be a stunning modern looking sports car. This is also a much more interesting, unique effort than the meh-looking McLaren MP4-12C.

Now if Acura could just build a nice lineup to fit below this car, they might just be back in the game!

stovt001 says:

04:17 PM, 01/ 9/12

I would be interested if not for the electric motors and AWD. It just seems to lack the purity of the original NSX.

s2krazy says:

04:19 PM, 01/ 9/12

It's better looking than an R8 or an MP4-12C.

ne1butu2 says:

04:34 PM, 01/ 9/12

This is missing something. There's very little style to it. Look at a Ferrari, Lambo, or the R8 and there is something about each of those that is just sexy. It looks as if Acura didn't want to offend anyone by getting too crazy. So it's just a generic futuristic looking car with the visual specifications of an exotic, but nothing else.

Or maybe it's perfectly fine, but I just don't like it.

Hey, don`t complain, at least doesn`t costs $800 000 like in Norway! Hahaha.

cubozoan says:

Developed and built in Ohio? What??? That strikes me as very odd. Either that means it'll be *tuned* for the North American market in Ohio, or that it'll be primarily a US/Canada product like the TL. It does look very good tho. Definitely the prettiest thing to wear an Acura badge in years. Hope it'll be worthy of the NSX name.

zr1man says:

08:43 PM, 01/ 9/12

The ZR1MAN is back after two weeks of sun and fun in Florida. All rested up and ready to go.

I don't think this car is attractive at all. It's much too angular. All those angles do not seem to flow together. It just doesn't look right from an esthetic point of view.
As far as performance is concerned, I predict it won't keep up with a base Vette, much less a ZR1.

Takanobu Ito needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.

alex38 says:

I think it looks pretty hot and a step in the right direction. But a mistake to make it a hybrid imo...adding in all those unnecessary electronics and weight from batteries..

Almost but not quite.. The originall NSX still looks amazing after all these years..

hondacura4 says:

The eSh-awd system actually weighs less than the traditional SH-awd. I dont think weight will be an issue here.

camaro84 says:

11:46 PM, 01/ 9/12

I guess the question becomes is how badly aka HIGH will Honda charge for this car. Or will they come to their senses and realize they need to undercut all the competitors and make this car in the $60-70k range.

bestjinjo says:

11:47 PM, 01/ 9/12

After Day 1, this is my personal contender for Best of Show Concept Car. I love the design. I hope this is how the next gen NSX looks like.

ZR1man, we know you love the ZR1 and hate all brands, except Chevy. It's OK to be a fanboy of a brand but you don't have to tell the world about it in EVERY post! We know.

Great car, Honda is doing it's job

I have an S2000, so when is the S3000 with the direct-injected VTEC V6 coming??

Also nice work on the new RDX

litewerk says:

In agreement with rsholland that "Finally, an Acura to get excited about." If it wasn't stated elsewhere, this looks to be the "halo" car of the Acura marque. For those not in-the-know, halo cars generate showroom traffic which help to sell the standard car line, since most folks can't really afford the car they really want.

Also in agreement with s2krazy that 'It's the best looking thing Honda's designed in years." I very much like the looks of this concept.
