Another half-day, another leak for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL. Earlier today we had some fairly low quality scans that showed the rough look of the new SL with some bits of interior barely visible.
This time, though, the leakers have gone and smashed the embargo with a full set of pics (availale after the jump) that show the new SL in the way Mercedes intended to release it. Albeit slightly sooner.
The new upright grille, Magic Sky Control roof and more dramatic side strake and headlights that look to be lifted from a new Volvo are the biggest changes we can tell you about from these shots.

If only it had a few more more lines, scoops, cuts, and chrome highlights. Then it would look SO ELEGANT AND LUXURIOUS.

Officially official: Mercedes' new styling language sucks.

Looks too much like something Toyota would foist upon the world, what with the collection of random shapes, strakes, and blobby bulges.
Also, I must say that I find it sad how much longer the front overhang has grown. This car has lost the sporty personality it had back in the early 2000s. Now it looks more luxo-barge-tastic. Pfft.

Reminds me too much of a Volvo S60!

Those headlights are trying way too hard and the obligatory led running lights over the top makes me want to puke on the next Audi I see for popularizing that design trend. Shame on Mercedes for playing following the leader. Isn't it bad enough they want to graft the SlS nose on all their models.

That cutline for the trunk is Acura-nasty!

The headlights aren't the only thing that look to be lifted from a Volvo. How bout that orange-bronze color? You wouldn't be able to peg silver, but that orange looks straight off your long-term S60.

I don`t like the blocky mercedes benz design theme.
And that center stack looks similar to the one in the C class! I wouldn`t want that as an SL owner, no way.
But, that ain`t mercedes benz fault only.
And the design of those a/c vents, not my cup of tea.
And those headlights, what is up with that weird eyebrow?

This roofline and trunk is not good. The headlamp/grille is a design that belongs on a bus, not a sports car. Overall, the exterior is a total mess. On a positive note, I do like the interior.

This car is officially ugly and undesirable.
All hail the new king Audi.

There is something off with the proportions, hood is very low and windshield is too upright.

This reminds me of the W113. It's not a bad looking car on its own, but compared to what came before it the design is a huge disappointment. Like the W113, I'm sure it will be a superior car in many regards to its predecessor, but it will likely have a much shorter model cycle than is typical for the SL.
Oh, and even though the exterior does nothing for me I love the interior. It is the one thing on this car that is light years ahead of the R230.

Wow, it's a race between BMW and MB to release the highest number of ugly cars in one line up.

It's a good thing for Mercedes the world is ending in 2012 because they've officially run out of 'styling.' Lucky for them no one will be around to remember this Lego kit.

I don't think it is that bad overall and I like the new upright grill, but the rear is pretty bad, especially the trunk line, and those side vents and strakes look like something Chrylser would have done a few years ago.

It's a bizarre design. But where could Mercedes-Benz have gone anyway?
The SLS coupe and roadster already have the retro/modern design this car should have had, and the SLK already has displayed the current design language on a 2 seat convertible platform. So what to do? They mish-mashed their other 2 door cars here.
You'd swear that in that first picture after the jump, Mercedes had released a CL convertible. In the top-up picture, the greenhouse and window shape look so close to a last generation Lexus SC I had to look at it again to make sure I wasn't crazy.
Then in the 6th pic after the jump, I immediately got the impression of the original 190SL.
On the plus side, the big butt should prove better for top-down luggage space.

@mercedesfan: I do not believe this car will have a shorter lifespan. I feel that they went with a design that is a bit to futuristic for the time it is released, but that 10yrs from now when the car is nearing the end if its life span it will still have some relevance in design similar to the R129 and won't fall into the issue the R230 had which ended up requiring two separate face lifts to stay fresh... The interior is gorgeous (though they need to not use the C-Class climate control on their $110000 roadster) and I'm glad to see that sadistic version of the "new" COMMAND (without the controller) that was featured in the previous car (and my ML) is long gone.
And don't hate on the W113, that was bar none my favorite iteration of the SL (excluding the W198) but definitely better than the W121...

@panamera4,
That's an excellent point and one I hadn't even considered. I loved the R129 from the get-go so I tend to forget that it wasn't all that well received right out of the gate either.
Also, I'm not hating on the W113. It's just that having a classic Mercedes myself I have a number of connections in the auction circuit. The W113 commands the least money of the classic SL lines because it's styling is considered awkward when compared to the W198 before and R107 after. As I said, it was a really fantastic car for its time and much better than the W198 in many ways, but its styling is considered too conservative and blocky.
