2012 Honda Crosstour Getting Four-Cylinder Option For EX, EX-L Models

 2010_honda_accord-crosstour_actf34_ft_3_1600.jpg

Honda has just announced big news for the 2012 Accord Crosstour; a new, smaller engine!

Right now, the 3,887-pound Crosstour is powered only by the 271-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 hooked up to a five-speed automatic. This combination is good for 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Starting next month, however, the Crosstour will be available with a 192-horsepower (at 7,000 rpm) 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder that returns 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Like the V6, it is only available with the five-speed automatic and unlike the V6, it is only available in front-wheel drive. Pricing was not announced but will certainly be lower than the EX's $30,340 price tag.

Standard features for the Crosstour were also updated and now include an automatic-dimming rear-view mirror, rearview-mirror backup display camera, automatic headlights, Bluetooth and USB input.

The front-drive, V6 powered Crosstour hit 60 in 7.2 seconds in our full test and completed the quarter mile in 15.5 seconds @ 91.3 mph.

Oh good. So Walter White has an option in the new car market.

How about a 'Biggest Loser' drag race?

The V6 was the best part of this car. I can't see why anyone will buy one now.

why the hate? i always thought that the biggest advantage the toyota venza held over the crosstour was the cheaper 4 cyl option....if i dont want a crv or a rav 4, i shouldnt have to pony up almost 30k for a v6 quasi accord/camry wagon...but i would pony up something around 25k or less for a fwd 4cyl model

Not having the 4-banger was ANOTHER Honda design error.......

Nobody here liked the V6 version, little chance they would like the underpowered 4 cylinder version. If you have a vehicle that people don't like you don't change that by making it worse.

@firstwagon: eldaino makes a good point though- most people don't really need the V6; most Venzas are sold with I4s. If Honda could knock $3K off the price in the process, perhaps more people would take a look at the car.

The only reason the 4cyl would be desirable is because the Crosstour is 400 lbs too heavy.

Cheaper and better mileage, some folks will go for that for sure.

The Accord Crosstour didn't have automatic headlights (meaning, I would think, that when you shut off the engine the headlights go off)? My seven year old BASE model Outback has that-- as standard equipment.

The current Accord with the 190 hp 4 cyl. is peppy, but it is probably 500 pounds lighter than the V6 Crosstour. Honda better cut a lot of weight out of the 4 cylinder Crosstour.

The Venza has a 2.7 liter 4 cylinder, with probably more torque. The 162 lb ft of the 4 Cyl Crosstour might not be enough, regardless of the 192 hp. Honda certainly has the lowest torque output of any 2.4-2.5 NA engine.

If this 4 cylinder Crosstour is coming out in January, as Honda has said, how come they don't know or will not tell us the price?

bonzjr says:

Yes, Honda, that's what people wanted. A barely more efficient (2-3 mpg in EPA testing, probably close to zero in the real world from having to stand on the throttle all the time to get it to move) yet significantly slower Uggo-mobile.

Glad to see you get it now.

(Erm... not.)

I guess it wont be the first boat they tried to sell you with a puny paddle.

albook says:

09:13 AM, 12/22/11

haha a 4 cyl isn't going to help this fiasco of a vehicle. Honda should save face and quietly kill it immediately. No one would notice. What were they thinking? A big heavy Accord wagon except without the utility of a wagon? And its ugly on top of that.

blueprint1 says:

The Venza sells because of its value pricing, four cylinder and good looks. The Crosstour had neither of the three, and did not sell. Honda will now have the engine right, now let's see about what they can do with pricing (looks, of course, are hopeless).

eldaino2 says:

@firstwagon: just because you dont personally like it doesnt mean that others dont...i see plenty of crosstours around. its not a beautiful car, but its a car i'd enjoy spending time in as a dd...same as the venza. i was more apt to buy a venza over a crosstour simply because of the engine.

even with the v6 none of these cars are really stoplight champions...and with the average car accelerating to 60mph in around 10 seconds, and hybrids even slower, i dont see how the lower output is a problem.

blueprint: again, the looks are totally in the eye of the beholder, and while i agree its not an overtly handsome car, it wouldnt be ashamed to own one.

we live in a world where the hyundai veloster exists and gets a pass. if that the case, honda has been far less offensive.

Actuallly, this is just what Ford did for the new Explorer-- they added a 4 cylinder, underpowered engine and held it to FWD only. I think that Honda realized that an AWD 4 cyl. Crosstour would be tasking the engine a bit too much.

However, Subaru offers a 2.5 liter engine in the Outback. And while it certainly isn't fast, it gets the job done. The differences are that the Outback weighs 3,500 pounds, puts out 170 ft-lb of torque @4,000 rpm, and has a good CVT.

(Sorry for the Subaru rant, but, you know, I was a devout Honda lover, and now there isn't one that I would like.)

alpha01 says:

@ed124c - yep, the Venza's 2.7L has 182 foot pounds at 4200 RPM (HP peak is at 5800 RPM, 182). The Accord EX's engine produces it's peak torque at 4400 RPM, and I would expect the same in the Crosstour application.

cz_75 says:

Now ugly AND slow.

church123 says:

08:09 AM, 12/23/11

ed124c - the Honda K24 engine actually puts out more torque across a wider spectrum than the Subaru does. Sure, the paper specs may say different, but the dynos say otherwise. The K24 torque curve in this application is nearly flat from 2000 to 6000 rpm.

Not my cup of tea at all - I don't like the looks and a 5AT automatic 190 hp engine in a 3700 lbs car is painful - but a lot of people don't seem to mind slow (and getting in my way :).

Saw a Crossturd behind me on the freeway today. That gaping maw is just hideous.

dace1 says:

This is by far the ugliest car out there. Plus the price of it is just stupid. This thing is uglier than the Aztec ever was. Plus more expensive. I see people driving this and just ask myself, "why". So many better things out there for the price.

nefariousnigel says:

08:30 AM, 12/24/11

The 201HP K24 in the Acura TSX, combined with a 6-speed auto, might actually be an ok combo. The Crosstour is hideous, but that's a different issue.

Give Honda at least 3 years to figure this out.

jeffreyo says:

12:36 PM, 12/24/11

What exactly is the point of the vehicle? At just 51.3 cu.ft. of cargo space, it is dwarfed by the smaller, and cheaper Jetta wagon (66 cu.ft). The Volvo V70 (closer in price to the Crosstour) is a whopping 72.1 cu.ft. Are people that adverse to wagons that they would by a less practical Honda (no comment on styling).

hoosiergrandad says:

02:37 PM, 12/26/11

How many of y'all have actually lived with one of these? Yeah, I wouldn't want to give up 90 hp, and I wouldn't mind if it were a conventional wagon, but........how many of you would use the extra 20-odd cu. ft. you'd get by squaring off the rear end? Maybe going a few miles from Lowes to home? Probably not on a long trip? I've got 18K on a red one and am not looking to get rid of it, believe it or not. Stranger still, I 've gotten many unsolicited compliments on its looks. I even like its looks myself on alternate days.

eldaino2 says:

06:43 PM, 12/26/11

@jeffreyo: maybe people who want more passenger room?
or how about people who value overall low cost to own? (i love me some vw...but as an ex owner, dont think i dont know what it costs to keep one properly maintained long OR short term. any honda does worlds better.)

@hoosiergranded:if having personal experience with the car they are commenting on, most of edmunds articles would be comment-less. enjoy your crosstour man.
