The List: 6 Gorgeous Cabins

2011_porsche_panamera_lead.jpg
It may not have anything to do with steering feedback or ride quality, but a good-looking cabin can have a powerful impact on the way you experience your car.

After all, where would you rather spend the night: in a five-star hotel, or that dumpy Motel 6 on the skeezy side of town? Yeah, I thought so.

The six models listed below (in alphabetical order) come to the table with cabins that are a joy for all the senses. They're all stunning from a design perspective, and the more premium among them offer impeccable materials quality, with yards of gleaming timber, and fine leather that begs to be touched.

2012.audi.a8.20392413-E.jpg
1: Audi A8
From headliner to floor mats, the A8's cabin is a study in understated elegance; the whole thing resembles the den of a very exclusive country club. The premium aesthetic at play here makes its point softly, but with feeling.

2011.jaguar.xj.20377428-E.jpg
2: Jaguar XJ
With the XJ's cabin, you get a journey into the heart of true luxury. Almost every surface is draped in the finest leather; you'll find it not just on the seat, but on the dash and doors. Overall materials quality is comparable to that of an exotic with a six-figure price tag, and tons of color choices make it easy to customize this rolling palace.

2011.kia.optima.20362183-E.jpg
3: Kia Optima
The Optima distinguishes itself from its sibling, the Hyundai Sonata, by offering sportier handling, and it underlines this fact with cabin design that's square and assertive. Everything is handsomely driver-focused, down to that center console angled toward you for easy reach.

2011.mercedes-benz.e-class.20346112-E.jpg
4: Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Blocky as the boldest piece of Brutalist architecture, the E-Class' cabin is a symphony of angular, masculine design. There's a vaguely retro feel here that calls to mind the best of the '70s, and we've got a soft spot for that broad, meaty steering wheel.

2011.porsche.panamera.20341109-E.jpg
5: Porsche Panamera
Just like the car's performance, the Panamera's cabin represents a perfectly tailored balance of sport and luxury. Certain styling cues suggest the businesslike look of a fighter jet's cockpit, but the fine materials on display ensure that opulence never takes a back seat.

2011.volvo.s60.20364113-E.jpg
6: Volvo S60
So graphic, so clean; the S60's cabin impresses with strong, modern design that is wonderfully Scandinavian. The high point of it all is that center stack, with its simple but stunning waterfall motif.

Which cabins would you add to this list?

I like the interior of the Jaguar XJ. But you forgot to include the interior of the VW Phaeton!

I prefer the Sonata interior to the Optima's darker, more masculine look. Masculinity has its place, but not necessarily in a car.

Of the six, I would, of course, take the Porsche for its dazzling design, creamy smooth colors and (fake?) wood trims.

Rolls royce ghost? Bently contenental? Buggatti veryon? Why are these not on the list?

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things does not belong.....

BTW, where's the M56?

Damn, Church beat me to it. I was going to post the exact same thing.

i really like the acura zdx interior....
i think it shouldve replaced the kia optima at least ==

that dash looks epic and all the gauges and trim pieces look just right

No Acuras but you have the S60 and Optima?! You guys are on some seriously good stuff...

Also, the CLS has better interior than the E in my opinion.

@ed124c: Every wood offering in the car is all real. That is the natural olive trim.

Same interior color as my car except I have the burl walnut trim and wheel.

@louiswei: The CLS may have a more stylized (and marginally better appointed) interior than the E, but the E's interior is iconic with its retro-angular design, it is a throwback to the great Benzes of the 70-80s.

Also I like the S60s interior much more than any current offering from Acura; Swedish minimalist design at its best versus Acura's plethora of various sized and shaped buttons and knobs sprawled all over the dash.

Of the ones shown the Panamera is my favorite. I also sat in a 2011 Cayenne with aluminum trim, first class all the way.

"the E's interior is iconic with its retro-angular design, it is a throwback to the great Benzes of the 70-80s."

I am 30, 70s-80s interior doesn't do anything to me...

I agree the Volvo has a very clean-cutting design, but last I checked, we are talking about GORGEOUS here... Maybe you are right, Acura interiors aren't gorgeous, but that S60 is also no where near gorgeous in my opinion.

kia optima? really??
a roadflytv review on youtube criticized its interior for feeling cheap

swap out the kia for a bentley or rolls and i'd agree with the list
if youre going for a lowcost entry, i'd say volkswagen CC

I always loved the interiors on the Saab 9000 (circa late 80's), it was probably my all time favorite. (btw the stack on t

Of those above I'd say the Merc is the best. Unlike everyone else I think the Porsche's interior is over-rated, and it's exterior is under-rated in the sense that it's not as vomit inducing as many would suggest.

IL really should have done this by category. Can anyone really argue that any Bentley, RR, or several other hyper-expensive vehicles doesn't have a better interior than cars costing sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars less??

HOw about best interior under $20k base price, under $30k, under $40k, etc.?

gregnv says:

I know this will sound crazy, but the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit has a surprisingly opulent interior. I don't own a Jeep, and I generally am not a fan, but I saw one at SEMA that was surprisingly attractive. By the way, the only mods for SEMA were on the outside (mainly black diamond paint), so the interior was bone stock. Surprisingly nice.

As others have said, you're nuts to include the Kia in this list. But then IL seems to be constantly touting the Kia as equivalent to BMW or M-B, so this should really be no surprise. The Optima's isn't even average-looking with all that black plastic. I guess we should be glad you didn't have the Rio or the Accent in here too.

I agree with @gregnva about the Grand Cherokee. The Buick Lacrosse and Regal have lovely interiors too, probably the best in domestic cars right now. Audi does the best interiors as a group at the moment. Don't care for the E-Class interior at all, though the S is very nice indeed.

This constant kissing of the ass of Kia/Hyundai has reached the point of annoying.

I give them credit, but you keep going overboard to the point that you need to start loosing credibility.

Porsche? Yep. Volvo? Agreed. Kia? Eh, maybe, given its price; compared to other family sedans, definitely.
But the e-class is ugly and trash, like all other benzes. The a8 is overdesigned and overdone, much like a 45 yr old divorcee, wearing too much makeup to disquise her averageness. The jag is just boring, and those alligator eye vents like straight up economy car.

But they did one thing right; thankfully no disgusting infiniti or yawnworthy lexus or button-crazy acuras.

scorp76 says:

Honestly I would easily replace the a8 or e 'class' with the Genesis sedan or CTS.

Let's play "Guess the one that doesn't belong here"

How much did Volvo pay to be on this list?

That interior looks ridiculously shabby next to the others.

church123 says:

The Kia isn't even the best in its class for interior, yet alone being good enough to be mentioned in a list of gorgeous cabins. The Nissan Maxima has a great looking interior for just over $30k. The Accord Crosstour is much more luxurious looking than the faux aircraft styling (or late 80's/early 90's BMW look) that the Kia is cultivating. And from the photos of the new Malibu, Chevy looks to have done better in this area as well.

As for the CTS interior, I like it, its well done, but it ain't anywhere close to A8 level. Maybe E-class, but definitely not A8. That goes for the Genesis (or the Equus with its extra baggy and discolored leather) as well.

DLu says:

I will pile on here too: even the description of the Optima's cabin, which you'd think would be an effort to persuade/demonstrate to you why someone would consider it to be gorgeous, just paints a picture of a functional, well thought-out cabin. It has NOTHING to do with "gorgeous."
