Now that Subaru has released illustrations of the BRZ Concept STI it will show later this month at the 2011 L.A. Auto Show, it's imperative that we compare them with the leaked photos of the Scion FR-S/Toyota FT-86 and make snap judgments.
I'll start: The BRZ is going to escape the injustice of clear-lens taillights, but it might suffer the indignity of tacked-on side vents. The BRZ also has a trapezoidal lower-fascia maw, but it's a wider, flipped version of the one on the FR-S/FT-86.
Oh, and what's with the STI-inspired go-fasterish bits on a "car" with a naturally-aspirated "engine"? Well, the press release has this to offer: "Combined with motifs of Subaru's iconic performance brand "STI," the concept car embodies an ultimate handling performance." Even it isn't exactly that, we've seen plenty of STI cosmetic packages on Subarus sitting in dealer showrooms in Japan, so we'll hold off on calling the quad tips disingenous.

The cars are much more similar than I anticipated - same headlights, same "hips", same tailight shape...only the front bumper / air dam is really different

Interesting though that with just some small styling changes, these cars easily look like they belong in the lineup of each company

So the difference between BRZ and FR-S is the hideous wing, quad(!)-exhaust and an uglier front end? Ok, Subaru...
If the rumor is true that the Suby version will be more expensive than the Scion/Toyota version then the differences better be more than a gigantic wing and uglified (imo of course) styling.
moparbad says:

BR-Z requires type R stickers, neon lights underneath, coffee can exhaust, and maybe even a drag parachute on the back to be complete.

"coffee can exhaust"
You are too nice, it's called the fart can.
lostboyz says:

What once was a highly anticipated car is turning into a poorly executed exercise of badge engineering. I'm sure there is a lot of potential in this car, that unfortunately can only be extracted via the aftermarket.
cr_driver says:
10:19 AM, 11/ 1/11
Wow, that Subie thing is just hideous. WTF are those 4 exhausts pipes doing there? It suits AMG cars, or cars with really big horsepower, not this.

sherief says:

I could do without the spoiler, but otherwise the BRZ looks pretty darn good.
of course this car doesn't suit people who love beige.

That rear wing has got to go. It looks generic and tacked-on to an otherwise good looking car. (Well, minus the overdone quad tips.)
church123 says:
11:34 AM, 11/ 1/11
I will say this for the Subaru - that rear wing is perfectly positioned and looks to be completely functional, unlike many OEM "spoilers" and such.
A car of this shape, particularly if there is not effective underbody air management (and at the proposed price level, you wouldn't expect much), really needs a rear wing to get good handling balance and inspire driver confidence at higher speeds. If this is a sporting car that is expected to compete in SCCA/NASA road racing, time attacks, etc. then that rear wing is a useful element.
huyracing says:

subaru copied the dodge charger on the rear 1/4 panel lol. i don't know what people expected from subaru... they are known for some quite ugly cars... and uber factory rice. (yet people are OK with quad tips and giant wings on the STI)
stovt001 says:
12:11 PM, 11/ 1/11
Well at least the quad pipes aren't as bas as those on the IS-F.
And I agree with Church - that wing actually looks more reasonable than most I've seen on cars like this. It will still look ridiculous on the highway, but it could be worse.
I'm not really seeing a whole lot of difference between the two so far, other than the rumor of more power for the Subaru. The uncomfortable signs of badge engineering are all there.
louiswei says:
12:32 PM, 11/ 1/11
How is this a "badge engineering" when Subaru and Toyota joint ventured in this project? It was said from the very beginning that both company will get their own version and Subaru never claimed that theirs will be more powerful. It was all internet rumor about the 300HP Subaru engine, people just took it as gospel and became "disappointed" when that didn't happen.
The Pontiac Sunbird is badge engineering
The Pontiac G5 is badge engineering
The Lexus ES350/240 is badge engineering
The Acura TSX is badge engineering
The Caddy Escalade is badge engineering
The whole Lincoln lineup is badge engineering
But the FT-86 duos are NOT badge engineering.

Scion is way better. IM sure the clear lights will be an accessory a'la TC or just for Modellista. Better default look and better personalization accessories, and I'm sure better stereo, celica heritage... Scion wins.

It's not badge engineering if it's not offered in the US. So the Infiniti G37 is badge-engineered from a Nissan Skyline? Don't use the term liberally unless you know what it means.

I'm really not seeing how this car is better or worse looking than the Toyota. What is all this criticism for the quad tips anyway?
"Oh geez, it has a 2.0 liter flat 4 instead of a 6 liter V8, looks like we'll only be able to put a single exhaust outlet to one side, dual outlets if we want to be brazen."
That's asinine to think that way. The car is supposed to look like it has purpose, and this concept certainly does. And of course you all forget that key operative word: CONCEPT. I highly doubt the wing is going to make it through as a standard feature.
The other thing that's interesting is that somehow, according to many here, the quad outlets and well positioned and proportioned wing somehow look out of place on a true sports car, but are completely passable and even lauded on an Impreza economy sedan that's been gussied up to be sporty. *rolls eyes*
It's like damned if you do, damned if you don't. Stop F-ing complaining. These are 2 affordable sport coupes, with RWD none-the-less, that are going to be available for purchase soon. I'd think people would just be happy these things are happening in the first place. As an enthusiast, I cannot wait for the opportunity to look at and drive these. For the price they probably won't be everything you want, but they'll probably come close. That's pretty much the case with every car we purchase anyway.

Badge engineering to me is... same company, same car, slightly different sheet metal and slightly different interior, regardless of the market.
And to answer your question, the G37 is a badge engineering product in my opinion.
moparbad says:

How about the Suzuki Equator.
Wing is ridiculous. Fender vents are ridiculous. Quad chrome exhaust tips are ridiculous.

While I'm a consistent proponent of Subaru being more than AWD, they should have passed on this project and let Toyota go solo. This car does not fit the Subaru identity.

I hate the fact that the ft-86 is going to a be a scion here in the states, disgusting.
The ft-86's styling isn't so great either but the BRZ looks a bit better (w/o the spoiler) but its still ugly.
AND LOOK AT THE BRZ FOR CHRIST SAKES, EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE IT CAME OFF AN AUDI. The headlamps came off an Audi R8, as well as the grill, the taillights are from the A8 mixed with R8(or something like that), the bumper is from the Audi TT RS, and the fenders from an r8. -___- wtf toyota/subaru.

Oh no! We're getting TWO sub 2700 pound, 200hp, honest-to-god sports cars. That will be very affordable.
Just be glad that these cars even exist.

After reading some of the comments, scary to think how ignorant some people are, and that they have a license to drive.
Buying a Scion isn't even an option, and I'd rather get another Subaru, anyways. So far, from what I've seen, the Subaru seems to be more subdued and tastefully done.
1) The Subaru pics are a concept vehicle, if the tiny rear-view mirrors and giant spoiler didn't give it away.
2) If either car comes with a spoiler, I'm sure a spoiler delete option will be available. Whining about it on the internet isn't needed.
3) No, the Subie isn't coming with red window tint, either. You're welcome...

finally the BRZ shows it self to the world... looks better than the FRS if u ask me!
the front bumper on the FRS looks alot like the 370z to me, not liking it at all...
im a wing kind of person.. but on a 200hp. machine??? come on!! thats stupid..
but hey.. maybe subaru will give it more power.. as in TURBO power that is! now this gets interesting :)
not feeling the both BRZ & FRS Quarter panels.. both just looks akward! they need work ..
still.. we will see them both soon & we will see the final product. really lookin foward

it is badge engineering, how is it not? It is no different than DSM cars. When you use the same platform, majority sheet metal, drivetrains, and accessory components, with only a differing front and rear clip and badges.....what would you call that?

Have you heard something called a "concept"? anyway, if Subaru is really planning an STi version, I hope it either has the same spoiler as the current impreza STi or a lip spoiler. Wings like that were never useful in most production cars and never looked good.

Nice how Toyota/Subaru copied the Hyundai Genesis coupe profile. Also, nice how they did almost nothing to differentiate the two models except the taillights and grill opening. Otherwise these are identical cars (except for interior & dashboard design we will see later). I still find it curious that Subaru did not go for an AWD version to further differentiate from the Scion/Toyota. I also find it amazing that Toyota basically "gave up" on this car being anything other than an 18-24 year old's rice racer by putting it in the Scion brand instead of the Toyota brand. They could have sold a bunch of these to mid-life crisis males looking for a cheap sports car, instead they all go to Miata's and Genesis or the muscle-cars (Camaro, Mustang, Challenger).
Even after ALL this effort, Toyota will STILL not have ANY two-door cars (no Celica, no Supra, not even a 2 door Camry or Corolla). At least Honda still makes 2 door versions of Accord and Civic! Don't they realize some people don't want a 4-door (not everyone has kids!)!??!? Toyota brand image is going down and they give their best car in a decade to Scion.......LAME!

Did you see the scion SEMA show car? That head light is 100% genesis coupe and that hexagonal opening is hyundai's trade mark now. They might just place the hyundai emblem and call it a day. Maybe it is Toyota's way to get back to Hyundai's ripping off their design 20 yrs ago.
