It's another busy day over at FT86 Club, where members have tracked down Toyota FT-86/Scion FR-S images from a TRD accessories catalog (yay, more clear-lens taillights) and what is apparently a dealer training guide for salespeople in Japan. The 86ers have translated much of the text from Japanese, teasing out a few more specs.
The training guide makes much of the car's low coefficient of drag and low center of gravity, the latter due to the engine being mounted low in the chassis. And we're still seeing that barely believable 6,600-rpm torque peak (151 pound-feet)... get ready for some serious heel-and-toeing, boys and girls.
In addition, the translated TRD catalog gives an idea of the go-faster, go-better accessories (hop over to the forum for the full list) Toyota is planning at least for the Japanese market. Among the items are a Brembo brake kit (6-pot in front, 4-pot in back), several choices of forged and cast 18-inch wheels, various suspension braces (including a tower bar up front), and a fully adjustable suspension setup that would let you change up the ride height and damping for track day use.

The best execution so far for the FT-86 duo in my option, well... except for the quad-exhaust and Altezza tail light.

The FR-S is already at SEMA. Edmunds has a photo of it at http://www.insideline.com/features/2011-sema-show-cars-pictures.html#non-makeotot103111121
Look in the central hall. It is red and it looks great.

"I'm sick of this car, they took so long to release it im bored, moved on."
Really? Fact check:
1. The first FT-86 prototype shows up on 10/2009, if my math is correct, that was only 2 years ago.
2. Took Nissan longer to go from GT-R concept to production car...
"The FR-S is already at SEMA."
That one is still the concept, this is the production version which will show up in the Tokyo Motor Show.

@ windsor5,
Who is selling a light weight RWD coupe with fantastic handling and decent acceleration @ $25k?
If straight line acceleration is all you care about then please ignore this car and go stright to your local Hyundai/Dodge/Chevy/Ford dealerships.

I don't want to be the laughingstock by bringing this car to the track.
This car seems NICE but not serious enough for the track and it will slow down others.

There is no RWD coupe like this out right now for $25k. Show me one? And not relevant? I mean, what do you base that on?
j2j says:

$25K would seem to be a bit optimistic on the pricing; the Subie version reportedly will start around $28K.
Also, Kia will debut a 4 cyl-powered 2+2 coupe concept early next year and Mazda is supposedly working on a cheaper successor to the RX-7/8 - so this market niche will be getting more crowded in the not so distant future.

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME with this statement!!?? This is so moronic I don't even know how to respond. It's super lite, has great handling, super low center of gravity and 200hp. And according to you it's not serious enough for a track car? Are you right in head?
If you think a track car is all about power then you have it all wrong.

Clearly Not!
Have you ever been to the track?
Maybe you are one of those annoying ricedout honda/toyota driver who doesn't know how to drive.
Its lite but its not super light. weight/power ratio is not that great(of course scion is better than corolla's but so what)! I drive GT3 on the track and I fking hate those econobox blocking my way. I try to enjoy the drive but I get tired of dodging those road blocks (AKA toyota).
Do you self a favor and remove yourself from the track. And bring your corolla with you.

How can you tell that a car (that hasnt even gone into production yet) has fantastic handling with out driving it? Havent even seen any first drives or test drives from auto journalist either.
And Mazda is still selling its RX8 @ $26k i think. Not sure on the weight, but even Edmunds and other sites have called it lightweight. Fantastic handling and decent acceleration? Well just read all of its reviews.

There are at least two articles about driving the prototypes, Google it.
However, you are right, ASSUMING that it has fantastic handling then there is nothing like it currently on the market. The lightest RX-8 weighs 3065 lbs, which is a full 400 lbs heavier than the lightest FR-S based on the leaked specs.
We'll just have to wait and see exactly how good the FT-86 duo handle, however, based on articles I've been reading, I have no doubt that it will be fantastic.
"I drive GT3 on the track and I fking hate those econobox blocking my way."
1. Last time I was at the track, a 911S was holding up a modded WRX...
2. If you are driving a GT3 and can't get around econoboxes easily then I think the driver might be the problem. Just saying...

who said I can't?
I get around easily whenever there is a room to do it safely. I don't want stupid Lexus hitting my GT3, clearly they don't know why they are there.

There you go, problem solved!
Unless you own the track then everyone is equal on the track, whether one drives a Ferrari or an "econobox"... If you always get caught up behind slow cars then maybe you should try a higher class or try different track day organizers what focus more on high end dedicated track going cars. At the very least, you can voice your concerns to the organizer, bitching about the "econoboxes" on IL isn't going to get you anywhere.

Well, this car hasn't been released yet so we don't really know how fast or slow it is at this point in time. There is really no use getting in too big of an argument over it.
Still, considering the mission of this car and how seriously these two automakers are taking the project, I will say that its pretty safe to assume that its going to be worthy of driving around a road course. Thanks for the laugh though.
Just because a car is slower than your GT3 class car, that doesn't mean that the slower car is a laughing stock that doesn't belong on a track. When you go to a race track and do hot laps, you need to respect the other drivers and share the track with them.

god, I don't know why people have to flaunt their GT3 and said this car is too slow to be a track car? are you just flaunting you have a GT3 and no one should drive a car on the track?
I am thinking a go kart that go 35 mph top speed on a indoor kart track are 100 time more like a track car than your GT3, and you have no right of saying that is too slow for you and blocking you because you have more power...just saying

A GT3 driver, eh? Sure you are. I think you're on the wrong forum, buddy. 6SpeedOnline is somewhere else.
Why would you care to comment about a cheap RWD "econobox" if you have yourself a mighty GT3? I know I sure as heck wouldn't.
Callin BS here. Heck I bet you can't even drive a stick.

Altezza lights never looked good on any car.
They look cheap and distasteful (the complete opposite of the 86). Better stick to full on red.
Still prefer the Subaru version but I'm liking the LF-A Esq front end of the Toyota.

Well, judging by all the contention this car has drummed up here and elsewhere, I'd say MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, Subota Toybaru! I normally reserve full judgement 'til after I actually drive something, but it'd be pretty hard for either Toyota or Subie to dick this one up. It's got all the tools to be something special. The worst thing about it will probably be the inexperienced boy-racer douchebags who will inevitably tack unnecessary wings, scoops, stickers, fartcans and LEDS all over it.

I think both cars look fanastic. The Toyota looks a bit better but if they are he same performance it wouldn't bother me to have either or. Now as for comments where people compare their GT3 to other cars... well those comments are out of place here. Back on topic.
Anyways If the price with some decent options and the price hovers around 25k then I think Scion and Subaru will sell tons of these. Nobody expected a rocket but at least we will see sporty cars that woun't require a person to be affluent to be able to afford one.
I'm afraid we are going to see a bunch people attempt to drift these on public streets but oh well.
I'm really looking forward to test drive either of these as I think they will be a hoot to drive.
If I get the Subaru I want World Rally Blue with Bronze OZ Rally Wheels or Bronze Enkei RPF1
If I get the Scion I want it in white with Gunmetal Volk CE28N
Both of course will have a nice staggered offset!
It's been a while since I've been this excited for sub 200 horsepower cars!
