Automotive App of the Week: GreenFuel

GreenFuel 1.jpg For most of us, refueling is as simple as finding a gas station with decent prices at the pump, and maybe a good cup of joe and a clean windshield squeegee. But if you're one of the brave early adopters driving an electric or alternative-fuel vehicle, getting from Point A to Point B becomes a challenge of connecting the refueling dots.

Fortunately, there's a $1.99 GreenFuel iPhone app for that. Unfortunately, the results that GreenFuel turns up can be as spotty as finding a hydrogen-powered vehicle on the highway.

The app uses the iPhone's familiar Google Maps interface to find fueling locations, and notes each one with either a red or green pin. But the abundance of red pins that we found in the LA area are private fueling facilities, such as for local municipalities and private companies. And a search for a hydrogen filling station turned up empty, although the app developer claims that locations will be added as new stations of all types open.

We also found that the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations located by the app varied widely by region, with a search of the New York area only showing two. But a search for automotive CNG in So Cal yielded the phone number and address as well as helpful info such as the nozzle style and gas-pressure level (PSI) at a location.
