When it was announced that the 2011 Chevy Volt would not be allowed in California's sacred HOV lanes-- thanks to a ULEV rating and because the CARB cycle doesn't test on the EV mode -- there was widespread disappointment. After all, the Prius counted. But those stickers went away and have been replaced by stickers that require the car to be AT PZEV, have a 150,000 mile warranty on emissions control and return c02/mile measurements of below 1.
And now the Volt will finally meet those requirements. Well, the 2012 Chevy Volt with the Low Emissions Package will.
The Low Emissions Package features modified engine and exhaust components. The catalytic converter now has a "secondary air-injection pump that streams ambient air into the exhaust stream to increase its ability to remove pollutants."
The Low Emissions Package will be standard on all Volts that are sold in California and will make the 2012 Volt eligible for a $1,500 rebate through California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Project in addition to the $7,500 federal tax rebate. That adds up to real money.
2012 Volt owners will still have to apply for one of the 40,000 available passes once they purchase.
Now that that's out of the way, I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but Chevy provided the above picture for use with this release. Would it have killed them to take a second shot? One that maybe has the whole car in the frame?

That's either one hell of a high speed camera, or traffic stopped. No one's wheels are moving.
I really don't have anything actually useful to add to this post. Though it's cool that they're doing it, at least.

Great... both the state and the fed are drowning in debt and we're giving tax credits to folks who can afford $40,000+ cars which aren't really any more environmentally friendly than several that cost half as much while allowing these hypermiling clowns to clog the carpool lanes.
Bah humbug.
