We've seen the word coupe stretched before, but this, I think finally breaks the word completely. This is the Volkswagen Cross Coupe that is being shown at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show.
The concept is sized between the Golf and the Tiguan, but this "part four-door coupe, part compact SUV" shows the new design direction VW is considering for its SUVs. We kind of dig the Phantom-esque roofline, but everything else has to go.
Like most concepts, this rides on wheels that are two sizes too big (265/45R20) and has a powertrain that is possible, but certainly not on the table for anything on sale to the public before, oh, let's say 2018?
The Cross Coupe is powered by a TSI gas engine with 148 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque. There's also a front-mounted 40kW electric motor pushing out 133 pound-feet of torque and an 85kW motor out back cranking out 199 pound-feet. The transmission is a DSG and this combination of motors can drive all four wheels.

How is it between the size of a golf and a tiguan if the tiguan is golf based? Is it just slightly shorter and lower ride height?
At least it looks better than the overly awkward countryman.

New Tiguan would be my guess. I think it needs bigger side glass, looks a little to slab sided for my taste.

I'm digging the restrained, yet very Volkswagen, interior. I don't know what the actual use of this vehicle would be, but I would by one nonetheless.

The C-pillar is too wide, but I like the interior, especially the two-tone seats.

Is this possibly Audi A1 sized? If so, it sure looks better than the A1.

Sorry, but the Countryman isn't even vaguely coupe-like. Jalopnik's headline--VW getting their own Evoque--was more accurate...
