2011 Tokyo Auto Show: Mazda Takeri Concept

takeri_f34.jpg

First press conference of the morning (yep, morning here) saw the unveiling of the Mazda Takeri. This car is the scale of the Mazda 6 (111.4-inch wheelbase, 190.9 inches long overall), and if the next-generation sedan looks anything like this concept, we'll be very happy. The tail is particularly well resolved.

Mazda reiterated its commitment to diesel with this press conference, as the Takeri is said to feature the company's excellent Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder plus the sharp-shifting Skyactiv six-speed automatic. The company also announced today that when the 2013 CX-5 launches in Japan in spring 2012, it will come with both the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G gasoline four-cylinder and the diesel 2.2-liter. This is no small thing in this country, where diesels historically aren't any more popular/tolerated than they are in the U.S.

The Takeri also has the company's latest brake regeneration technology plus idle-stop. The steering uses electric assist. The wheels are 20s; we hope these will go down to at least 19s for the production car.

If they release a 5-door version in the US again, I may have found my next vehicle.

Absolutely stunning, best looking Japanese sedan ever possibly. Not a hard thing to do considering the yawners that usually come from Japan.

If Lexus built a sedan that looked this good with their usual refinement (which the Mazda won't have), they would a blockbuster hit.

I really hope they don't water it down too much for production.

Simply stunning vehicle. Mazda IS Japan's style leader all of a sudden.

WOW.

They are now officially forgiven for the stupid smiley face.

I really like it. Especially the fact that it doesn't look like all these four-door-coupe designs coming out lately. Take the Mercedes CLS and Passat CC for example, to me it they just look like a giant frown in profile view.

@stovt001, are they? Mazda has always had amazing concepts that end up being cute-ified by the time they hit market.

Frankly it looks like infiniti's design language with more creases and hard lines in it.

@lostboyz- no offense but infinit wish they made a vehicle that looked that good. This concept only needs to get a some realistic side mirrors put on and its likely good for production.

What a gorgeous car. So long smiley face!!! Looks alot better in a picture as apposed to the previous renderings. I love how mazda just sits on the sidelines and watches the other's manufacturers do their thing and then comes out of left field with something differnt all together. An no, it does not look anything like a Sonata. I really hope that the panoramic sunroof makes it to production. By the time that this car comes out, my Mazda 3 will be paid off and it'll be time for a new car. I hope that this car doesnt stray too much form the concept as I will really consider it.

@bigcjm, I don't disagree with you, it was just my first thought. That's what they could do, but most likely won't. Look at the CX5, the goofy face design isn't changing anytime in the next few years.

pure_hp says:

The CX-5...........now this!!!! Sweet! They'll probably drop the 20's down to 18 and make the 20's optional. Don't get me wrong..........20's look good on it already!!

I agree w/johnp, wouldn't mind seeing a 5 door of this either. When is this coming to the US??? Already got a good Mazda dealership nearby.....they may be seeing more of me first half of 2012!!! Wonder if this too will get a manual..

bigcjm says:

@lostboyz Really the two changes form the concept to production for the cx5 was the gille(which is now mesh) and the head lights. Most of the car has stayed the same. I feel mazda may just want to keep that grille for the premium models(mazda 6, Cx9, Mx-5), but i could be wrong.

lostboyz says:

I'm just saying the CX5 on paper is an excellent car, with that front end, I couldn't buy it. The history of mazda has had some amazing concept cars that sometimes doesn't translate to a real car. I think the current 6 is the closest, but there is something that still seems awkard about it. The RX8 even started to transition from awesome to happy face.

I like mazda a lot, it just seems like their designers are trying to keep me from buying one. If they can translate this well to a production car, I might change my mind.

Mazda already has the Zoom Zoom, now gives us pretty darn good fuel economy + not goofey smiley, and things will look quite good.

Looks really good. I don't mind the face having a little personality, I just don't want one that looks like it stepped right out of the CARS movie series...

One thing that caught my eye was the announcement that the 2.2 diesel will be launched with the CX5 in Japan. Wonder about U.S.? If it comes when the CX 5 comes, I'll be waiting, if they delay a year, then no Mazda for me.

What a looker!

I'd like to see an Infiniti/BMW fighter from Mazda though. Take this car, push the front wheels further forward, make it RWD, give it 300 hp and you'll have a 335i fighter that is reliable.

Best looking car since the older Mazda 6's. Looks took a hit when the current gen came out, but this one more than makes up for it. I hope it makes to production. I've seen a lot of Mazda concepts over the past few years that were stunning, but have yet to see them on the road.

Nice car and nice color....but that sure is a long front overhang.

After spending about 20 min trying to register on this I'm finally in.. anyways.

Do you all Mazda wouldn't love to take this vehicle as it is into production?? Problem is that (at least here in the USA) people is more than happy to go and pay 2-3K more on an ugly-as-hell new camry or a dull and overpriced accord!! so how do we expect that they possibly make a business case with a new Mazda 6 looking exactly as this one if people plainly does not buy it!!! Look at the current 6, specially the V6, it looks awesome!!! the wheels, the coupe-like roofline, the wheel arches, the adornment accents on the tailpipes (lexus LS-like), the over all lines of the damn car just flow beautifully! Yes, there are a couple of odd angles, but so does the Merc CLS, or the nwe Jag XJ... and that's just the aesthetics.. move into the mechanics and you find, a couple of very very very competent powertrains the most powerful V6 among the competition (If I'm not mistaken...) when it came into the market like 4 years ago, and a very useful 4-potter. Handled like a proper Sport saloon, was reliable, priced accordingly, interior was clean, ergonomical, the nav sys was on the weak side but that's not a major flaw. Oh! I almost forget. They designed this one with specific dimensions to satisfy our way of thinking that BIGGER=Better (wonder where this is going to end..) And even then the sale numbers vs the camry, accord, altima, and even the sonata lagged behind by much!!! Sometimes I think it is more an advertising problem... Sometimes I think people is simply not aware of the very good products that Mazda has in their showrooms.. I don't know, its just a hypothesis... Back to my point. How can people expect then that mazda carry over the materials, the 20" wheels, the paint finish, the leather from the interiors... when the numbers don't allow them? I mean, these cars are assembled in Japan and USA. Not Korea or China. Add to these that they are a fairly small manufacturer. they don't have the capital access that the other monsters have... and even then they still manage to develop pretty amazing cars.

At least for me this is frustrating.... Why? because it incentives some sort of mediocrity on the other manufacturers... Not saying that Honda, Toyota, Nissan etc... do not produce good reliable products, but they do not deliver cars that their money, their infrastructure, their heritage, their R&D capabilities should... Therefore they just throw at us the "New Honda Civic 2012!!! " WTF!!! seriously?? Was that your best effort to go against the new Focus, or the Elantra?? God! all of a sudden the Kias (Optima, Forte..) are a very compelling product!!

About the "Smiley Face" on the 3 I think it works fine. I am Ok with that design... Problem is the car's design can not be observed by individual pieces.. it all works together as a group. Think about the mole on Cindy Crawford's face. Look at the mole by itself and it is hideous but zoom out and wow! it all changes right? Now the mole is part of those sexy looks! At least thats what I think...

I have many more thoughts about all this but I am tired of writing.... Bye..

This one looks like a winner...Japan is finally hiring good car designers!
