2011 L.A. Auto Show Video: 2013 Mazda CX-5

MazdaCX5_Vid.jpg

Mazda unveiled the 2013 Mazda CX-5 at the 2011 L.A. Auto Show. Now we know that this future CR-V rival will come to market in February 2012 with a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 155 horsepower.

Find out what James Riswick is smiling about after the jump.

oops...I think Mr. Riswick meant 2.0 skyactive G not 2.2. He might have let it slip because like most of us we want to see the 2.2 skyactive D make its away accross the pond.

The CX-5 manual will only be front wheel drive and in the base model only. Meaning: No goodies available.

The new Impreza, with a 155 hp 2.0 engine and AWD, gets 27/36 with a CVT and 25/34 with a manual. Yes, yet another Subaru with a manual transmission, all wheel drive, sunroof, etc. The Forester, Legacy, and Outback are also treated to a manual with goodies.

@ed124c

have you been in a forester lately? the interior is miserable, its like a early 90's lexus minus the high quality materials.

I am not impressed with this car or sky activ at all. First of all, I don't care how Mazda or IL try to spin it, this thing is slow. 0 - 60 in 8.6 seconds, ugh! Second, 30 MPG, big frickin deal. The new Ford Escape has a nice 2.0 liter direct injected turbo that is kicking out 250 lbs/ft of torque and just under 240 hp, and will likely surpass Mazda's MPG rating (using the number from the heavier Ford Edge with the same turbo engine for the basis of this assumption.) Don't get me started on the weak CR-V with its carry over 5 speed transmission (really!!) and weak 2.4 liter engine. I am not a Ford fanboy, I have not owned an American car in over 15 years but now that I am looking for a small crossover, I am drawn to the new Escape over these other offerings. Way to go Ford!

You don't actually believe you'll get 30 mpg in an Escape with the 2.0 turbo? Really? Marketing guys will love you.

Check out the Juke to see what a 1.6 turbo gets and do the math.

@secretsaver

I am enjoying Ford's new products too, but really? You'll believe Ford's hype, but you won't put any faith in Mazda? A company that is, above all else, an engineering firm -- not a marketing firm.

Inside Line is saying they've achieved their fuel economy without resorting to EPA-inflating gimmicks that result in your car engaging 6th gear before you've even pulled out of the driveway. Yes, that's how the Hyundais and Fords of the world are achieving higher numbers with their automatics vs. manual transmissions these days. It's downright annoying in real, day to day driving.

Anyhow, I had a 2003 Mazda Protege5 for several years -- my first new car. It was a blast to drive and I expect no less form the CX-5 based on what I've read so far. Lets compare the specs to see if Mazda's technology has improved over the past decade.

MP5:
compact car, low to the ground
2716 lbs.
2.0 liter engine
130HP/135lb.-ft.
5 speed manual
0-60 in 9.2 seconds (according to this C&D test: http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/chrysler-pt-cruiser-vs-ford-focus-pontiac-vibe-mazda-protege5-suzuki-aerio-toyota-matrix-comparison-tests)
EPA 22/28 (admittedly, not best in class by a long shot)

CX-5:
compact SUV, a good 8 inches taller and a much bigger car
3250 lbs. (est)
2.0 liter engine
155HP/150lb.-ft.
6 speed manual
0-60 in 8.6 seconds (0.6 second improvement with same engine size and a much larger vehicle)
EPA 26/33 (HUGE improvements)

That's 33, not 30 as you stated. I am impressed. And even if the competition comes close on paper, nothing else will be as enjoyable from behind the wheel. This coming from a died-in-the-wool Ford guy.
