2011 L.A. Auto Show: Jaguar C-X16 Concept in the Flesh

jag_cx16_01.jpg

The Jaguar C-X16 concept is nothing new to us. It premiered at the Frankfurt show a few months ago. We were already pretty excited, but now that we've seen it in person, we can say it's easily one of the most attractive designs out there.

Jaguar decided to give the concept C-X16 a fresh coat of Neutron White paint for the L.A. crowd. Honestly, I prefer the silver from the Frankfurt show, but it's still a stunner. Aggressive vents in the front fascia, a long sculpted hood and aggressive rear haunches have me hoping this concept makes it to production untouched. I Photochopped a convertible, but I've got my eyes on the coupe and its side-opening rear hatch that is reminiscent of the old E-Type coupes.

Then there are the mechanicals. A 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that makes 380 hp, paired with an electric motor that adds another 96 horses. OK, it may not be supercar territory, but the cool factor far outweighs the outright power. Taking a cue from Formula 1 KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) technology, the C-X16 uses a regenerative braking system to charge a supplemental battery. The charge from that battery is unleashed through the electric motor for a 10-plus-second boost. Yes, that's "push-to-pass" for the street.

Given that this is a hybrid system, fuel economy is claimed to be as high as 41 mpg on the highway. It's doubtful that you'll see that kind of mileage if you explore the C-X16's performance limits, which Jaguar estimates at 4.2 seconds to reach 60 mph on the way to an electronically limited 186 mph.

Wow that is sexy and I totally agree that they should bring that to production exactly like that!

Jaguar is really throwing down some amazing cars/concepts the past couple years.

Kudos to the Brits...now where is the CX-75? My next car NEEDS to be turbine powered.

Very pretty. I like the "I"m the driver, I get to control the radio" block to keep the passenger from messing with the settings.

This will be the next-gen XK, correct? 'Cause any NEW model will compete with the XK for the few dollars that flow to Jaguar already.

@akitadog I don't think this is the new xk. it will more likely be marketed at the z4, Cayman, and slk

"...any NEW model will compete with the XK for the few dollars that flow to Jaguar already. "

akitadog, Jag is obviously trying to pull in more $ than they do already, and as carfreak13 noted, position this car to take sales from the z4/cayman/slk segment. But you bring up a legitimate issue, IMO. The pricing of the CX16, as postulated by various media sources, appears to be all over the place. Some think Jag will move the next generation XK upscale/uprice a bit, thus leaving space for the CX16. Frankly, I think that would be an error.

Jaguar always did well in the past when they offered levels of luxury and/or performance that compared with the competition, but at a lower price. These days, I doubt if they can maintain lower price points compared to the competition for whatever versions of this car they offer, if they porceed with it. But they are going to have to be very careful about moving the price too far north of $60K.

I feel Jag would be crazy not to produce this car, pretty much as shown here, and use the Cayman pricing as their guide.... although it's hard to believe they would be able to offer a fully-optioned, KERS/hybrid-equipped version for less than $70K. I don't think moving the next XK upward in pricing will do that car any favors, so Jag will have to be very careful about the pricing of both he XK and CX16 to avoid these cars competing with each other.
