2011 L.A. Auto Show: Ford Escape Hybrid Discontinued

2013_escape_front.jpg

Ford will not build a hybrid version of the redesigned 2013 Ford Escape, Mark Schirmer, the company's communications manager, told Inside Line today. That role will be left to the C-Max Hybrid and C-Max Energi (the plug-in version of the hybrid).

In other news, the 2013 Escape will come in S, SE, SEL and Titanium trim levels when it goes on sale in May. You'll see examples of three of the four on the L.A. auto show floor. As usual, the Titanium (shown above) has the best wheels.

Still no plans to bring the C-Max in a version that serves as a reasonably sized and priced people carrier with sliding doors?

Can't believe Ford is discontinuing the Escape Hybrid.

Why are there not more hybrids? From the writing of john1701a I would certainly have expected all vehicles to at least have a hybrid option. Only Toyota seems to understand the value of hybrid technology.

The Escape Hybrid is EPA rated 30/27 mpg AWD, 34/31 mpg FWD. From a CAFE standpoint the new ICEs do almost as well at lower cost and will suit most people except for those who do most of their driving in heavy traffic for relatively short distances. And since Ford does not have to settle for Toyota's leavings from their common suppliers, they can build and sell more Escapes without the Hybrid, and use the parts they do get for the Fusion.

Let's see, the new 1.6 EgoBoost Escape AWD gets 20 mpg, and the Hybrid Escape AWD sets 30 mpg (yea, EPA city, but that's closest to actual).

I can't believe that both Ford and Edmunds thinks that 20 mpg is way better than 30 mpg. I got news for them, it ain't.
