Video: Behind the Scenes of Bullitt

Bullit chase.jpg

Yesterday was the 43rd anniversary of the theatrical release of everyone's favorite car chase movie, Bullitt. That's as thin a reason as we need to post this cool behind-the-scenes video of what it actually took to make some of the scenes in the classic flick.

"Big problems, of course, in doing a chase as dangerous as this on the streets is that nothing comes off like wheels, axles, shock absorbers. Because the things we did on the streets with automobiles I don't think will be done for a long, long time," narrates Steve McQueen at one point. The comments just get better from there.

Car chase stuff starts around 6:15. Steve McQueen looking more badass drinking milk than you or I would cagefighting at 3:50. Jacqueline Bisset looking stunning right around 5:00...oh just watch the whole thing.

Can you imagine the San Fran of today allowing a real car chase to take place in the city? Unless it was two Prius...

Yep, for sure... well, except for that Vietnam thing... and Kent State... and the lynchings and church-burnings... and the high-profile assassinations... and "The Flying Nun"... and Nehru jackets... and Gary Puckett and The Union Gap... and fluoroscopes...

Take that all into account, and it's plain for everyone to see that Mr. McQueen singlehandedly made the sixties cool. :)

Jeezus, take it with a grain of salt.

I was born in 1986, and when I see all of the cultural differences from the staid '50s, it just made for a more exciting time. The fashion, the music, the way the film crew just looked so badass with their Carrera sunglasses and suits donned. It was just a different time. I also think London in the early 1980s was cool. Was it? Probably not so much.

20/20 hindsight, wearing rose colored glasses.

You conspicuously left out stuff like the long-haired, dope-smoking, anti-war protesting hippies with signs like "Ban The Bomb In VietNam" and "Make Love Not War." Race riots in NYC, LA, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit and other places. American U-2 spy plane shot down. Failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Sharon Tate murder. President Eisenhower's farwell address warning of "the acquisition of unwarranted influence by the military-industrial complex."

Sadly Eisenhower's warning was not heeded and as a result we have been suffering the effects ever since.
