Supercharged Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC Headed to SEMA

As we've come to expect lately, Hyundai is set to have a large presence at this year's SEMA show. First they announced the PM Lifestyle / Universal Technical Institute 2012 Hyundai Veloster and now we've got this: The Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC.

A project of Hyundai American Technical Center Inc (HATCI), the Hurricane uses a Magnuson supercharger ( providing 6-7 lbs of boost) and a liquid-to-air intercooler to kick out "more than 450 horsepower" from the car's 3.8-liter V6.

"The HATCI and Magnuson supercharger demonstrates the high-performance potential of the Genesis Coupe's V-6 engine -- the car was engineered to handle this kind of extra power. Our HATCI engineers have been working for years with Magnuson to ensure high engine output is available on future Hyundai vehicles," said David Dutko, Senior Engineer at HATCI. Torvec provides the IsoTorque differential used here that claims to provide a one-second-per-lap improvement around Hyundai's proving grounds.

The exterior design was handled by Rhys Millen Racing while the interior gets the full Katzkin leather treatment and a $35,000 Lexicon audio system from Harman. The wheels are Enkei

Unlike so many other SEMA cars, this one isn't too far from reality. In late September we caught a Genesis Coupe hot weather testing a supercharger kit -- a step most SEMA cars don't bother with.

I think a lot of people were looking for a V8, but this supercharged V6 makes a lot of sense. It'll keep the fuel economy numbers high and it leaves the door wide open for additional aftermarket mods.

Let's hope Hyundai decides to put this one into production.
