Scion FR-S / Toyota FT-86 Leaked in Modellista Catalogue

 ft86a.jpg

After years of speculation, spy photos and concepts, it appears that the final version of the Toyota FT-86 / Scion FR-S has been leaked by Toyota's in-house customization department, Modellista. But before we put too much into this image, remember that this is a Modellista leak and that things like the wheels, chrome accent strips, big exhaust and the pseudo canards up front could all be aftermarket pieces.

Beyond that, though, this looks to be a much more production friendly version of the concept we saw in New York.

The big surprise here is the interior which appears driver-focused and cool and reminds us in all of the good ways of a Mazda interior. There's also a central mounted tach and an LFA-inspired steering wheel.

I hope a lot of the stuff going on with the exterior of this car is, in fact, aftermarket because it's way, way, way too much.

The interior looks like a great place to be! The outside looks like it takes a few cues from the genesis, panamera and even the LF-A. I'm excited to see it in person if they have it at the LA Auto show this year!

IMO it looks fantastic!!! If they give it a 2.5L Turbo and 300HP I will be first one to buy the. And I just may stop lusting after the MK4 Supra.

Overall i like it... However

The front end is a little "flashy". Its not a big deal but could be "calmed" down a little.
The rear definitely needs a spoiler though. Not necessarily a huge one just something

Depending on power i would definitely consider an FR-S

Get rid of that chrome piece on the side then I am good.

It's interesting that they put the engine start/stop button on the center stack...

There are two possibilites for that big plastic cover below the A/C:

1. The audio controls and optional nav system is hidden behind it like the Scion tC.
2. The car can be ordered without any audio system.

I hope it's the later because that will make it a great dedicated track car.

Okay, and how exactly is this supposed to be an approxiamately $20k car? I would guess that the majority of that exterior is aftermarket, along with the two tone interior.

julianb says:

Toyota sure knows how to make ugly vehicles... Tone It Down. The Nissan 370Z was nice lookin especially, in person, but was way too overpriced with little power. I like the competition in the affordable sport car segment, but this Toyota lacks in the looks Department.

carguy444 says:

This car is supposed to get the toyobaru engine right? the 200hp NA 2.0? Last time I checked thats what its getting. Anyway I dont like how it has some new camry design in it.

rayzor says:

It just looks odd from certain angle but otherwise, sporty looking. I like the interior. It may very well looks better in person...Keep our fingers crossed.

I will patiently await for the 'Roo version. The japanese market models always have stupid looking, goofy accessories that no one wants.

blackdynamite1 says:

The key to this is curb weight.

The target weight was 1100 kg! If it's under 1200, expect it to blow up like me, BlackDynamite!
Rumor also has it the price will start at $22k for the base version, less than a Ford Mustang
NICE!

love the interior. Center tach, simple functional center stack. All in all (minus the tuner bolt ons) I think this looks pretty good.

A competitor to the Hyundai Genesis Coupe? Talk about reversal of "follow the leader"

altimadude05 says:

I see a lot of Hyundai Genesis and some 370Z in the wheel arches. Looks pretty good except for the chrome door bumper and the too-big grill opening.

5lv8 says:

The car looks great both outside and inside. I think the shifter is the best looking part of the car.

malibu79 says:

Door handles and side mirrors are taken directly from my Subaru Legacy GT. I was hopeful that I would like this car so I could have an excuse to get a reliable, reasonably priced, fun car but if this is what the final product will look like, count me out. It's too busy and doesn't look much like the concept car.

hotrodw says:

11:45 AM, 10/27/11

Not as clean as the original FT-86 concept, but far better than the most recent versions. It might be worth a look if they ditch the door molding. Even more so if they eventually offer with a turbo. Giddy up!

blackdynamite1 says:

11:48 AM, 10/27/11

BTW, this is released by an aftermarket parts company in Japan.
This isn't exactly what it will look like stock

Many of these parts are probably aftermarket add-ons

Obviously some of you don't A) read the post in its entirety, and B) look at the pictures more closely than a passing glance without using some critical thinking skills.

As quoted from the post, "But before we put too much into this image, remember that this is a Modellista leak and that things like the wheels, chrome accent strips, big exhaust and the pseudo canards up front could all be aftermarket pieces."

Then, take a close look at that first image. There's a green line separating the main image from the images of the accessories along the bottom, i.e. the front bumper extension, side skirts and chrome accent strip, and rear bumper extensions. The chrome accent strip obviously isn't stock. It has the same photoshopped sparkle on it as the chrome part of the front bumper extension, and even looks like a drawing compared to the rest of the vehicle.

I have no doubt in my mind that a) that hideous chrome accent strip is an add-on, and not stock, and b) the overall design will actually look much better once it's revealed without the various accessory bodywork extensions and stock wheels.

looks great. you need to understand what modellista is and how japanese factory options often are, which tend to come in HUGE varieties, many of which are quite garish. looks like they stuck to the ft-86 concept pretty well w/ the production car. this is a car that i really want, probably the most desirable toyota to me since the sw20 mr2. can't wait

The FT-86 looks great. The design is bit extreme but 370z took few months to soak in for me. I saw the concept car in new york and in person it doesn't look bad. Regardless of its performance, looks, or price, thank the 'car lord' for another FR sport car.

sixwheeler says:

Looks very generic, dispassionate and derivative - almost as if the committee that designed it ran out of ideas early on, so they figured, "let's take the Genesis' headlights, the Z4's taillights, the Z's profile, and slap on a few design clichés here and there and be done with it?"

And then there are those wheels. What's not to like?

blackdynamite1 says:

04:20 PM, 10/27/11

Price: $22k-25k
Weight: 2500 lbs
0-60: 5.6 seconds
Quarter: 14 seconds
Braking: 60-0 in 109ft
Slalom: 70.5 MPH
Skidpad: .92

Write it down, take a picture of it, I don't give ..........

Even when Toyota makes a sports car again, people complain about it. Toyota originally had sports coupes like the Celica and Supra in the past that mimic the look of the Scion FR-S. I'm glad they're bringing it back. Inside and out, this car is a sports car.

What Toyota has to do is price this right. In my opinion, Toyota could have sold this car for thousands more as a remade Toyota Supra rather than a Scion. Toyota has done nothing with it's so called "youth brand" forever. You can't even get fog lights on an XD or a decent set of alloy wheels on any Scion compared to the entire line of Ford. If you ask me A SCION OWNER, the FR-S better not be more than $23K!

Here is link to video footage of the FT-86 at the Nurburgring where it places 3rd in class on October 16; pay special attention to the end of the video where you can see the technicians doing a post-race inspection of the engine-bay area; a strut-tower brace is visible and its clear that the engine sits extremely low in the engine-bay.

For those new to Jap mags and aftermarket literature, the three lower pics highlight the exterior aftermarket mods. Hopefully including that chrome strip. Not a fan of the head and tailights at all. They went for quirky rather than sleek. Till I see the curb weight I'll reserve my disappointment.

At least it has a nicer interior than any Corvette ever made but then so does just about anything.

rpvitiello says:

Sorry but something was lost in translation from the scion FR-S concept to this car. The concept was sleek, sexy and futuristic looking. This looks like a generic toyota coupé, disregarding the alleged "aftermarket parts," that could have come out 5 years ago. It looks dated and boring on the outside. If that is the japanese market car, I hope the scion version gets lots of style changes to look more like the NY auto show concept!

The interior is nice enough.

louiswei says:

07:00 AM, 10/28/11

Concept cars are concepts, I find it funny how there are some people who always expect the production cars to look EXACTLY like the concepts...

This is the FR-S concept: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/scion-fr-s-concept-new-york-2011/#photo-4074076/

The production model (if those mag pictures are true) gets a set fog lights, realistic head lights and realistic tail lights (personally I prefer they go all red instead of Altezza but that's another topic). They got rid of that fantastic but 0% realistic rear diffuser but the greenhouse and the side profile stayed exactly like the concept.

ed124c says:

07:02 AM, 10/28/11

It is all going to come down to weight and power.

The car looks just fine. I can't believe the people who call it ugly. What does that make the Juke?

A great competitor for the Mustang V6 (at least for open minded people).

Hyundai better start putting some money into the Genesis Coupe, or it will be the forgotten pony car (if it isn't already).

I have to agree that they do look cool and offer the most value of any performance car for the buck - really by far. Heck there is a dealer near me advertising 25K off the sticker price of a brand new ZR1 and Z06 can be bought for 40K ish after a few years. Just don't buy one new due to the mad depreciation and the fact that they are quite plentiful on the aftermarket as the oldsters that own them tend to get beyond the age of being able to use them any more.

blackdynamite1 says:

06:41 PM, 10/28/11

The right thing for Toyota to do, from a business standpoint, is to obviously release the car next Spring.

Then two years later, just as the shine on this apple starts to fade, release a new Turbo version, with 0-60 in under 5 seconds!!

Ka-ching!

@explorerx4:

The pictures with three pedals are obviously of the 6MT model. The close-up shot of what looks like a manual shift lever does not show the footwell. Also, note how short the shift lever/gear selector is in that close-up shot compared to the gear levers in the other two shots.

Putting those "aftermarket" parts aside, I think this is one hot looking cheap RWD coupe and the interior hints a bit of new volkswagen Beetle and that's not a bad thing. I was actually expecting an interior similar to that of a 350z with the cheap plastics and a dull dashboard.

I can't judge the practicality of this thing though. One of the characteristics of the original 86 was that it was practical and easy to live with in a day to day basis and I would be quite amazed if this thing can will have a good amount of cargo space not to mention hold 4 people.

And I think the Subaru version will look a lot more cleaner IMO

The Subaru version is MUCH better looking (it is a very good looking car, I think).
And I would definitely buy the Subaru version over the Toyota, even w/the traditionally weaker resale.
Why?
So I wouldn't have to be seen in a Toyota -- for 40 years the most congenitally dull and lifeless driving cars on the planet.
With the exception of Lexus (or Lexi) -- which are also Toyota.
