Spy Photos: Dodge Hornet Sedan Prototype Nearly Undisguised

 DodgeHornet_b1_KGP_ed.jpg

Previously all of the Dodge Hornet test mules we've seen running around the U.S. have been hatchbacks, and well disguised ones at that. Now, thanks to a long lens and good timing, we've got a solid look at the front of Dodge's new small car and along with it, a surprise sedan body style.

Now even though we've seen the Dodge Hornet testing only as a hatchback and even though the Alfa Giulietta is available only as a hatchback, there's just no way that Dodge would try to push a new small car through the U.S. market in only the most stylish, most space-efficient way. No, there had to be a sedan version and this is it.

After the jump we've provided a photo where this mule's matte-black camo has been digitally filled in to match the rest of the car. If the rendering is to be believed, visually at least, this thing will give Ford and Hyundai a serious run for their money.

Why can't the cross hair grill just die already? Otherwise, it doesn't look so bad. And I have to say that is the roundest hood I have seen since the back door on a VW Bug.

wait! why is it looking like a hyundai?

I hope it has scalloped sides like the Charger, otherwise the side profile is unexciting.

Finally, a direct replacement for the Neon. Looks like it will be a winner. Hopefully, it will have adequate gusto to go with the macho.

I hope hey offer a hatch as well, it looks good, but how well does it drive??

"there's just no way that Dodge would try to push a new small car through the U.S. market in only the most stylish, most space-efficient way. No, there had to be a sedan version and this is it. "

Really? Just had to slip in an opinion huh? You must be one that hates the fact that Americans like sedans better. I just dont get why other people care what style of car another buys.

@kopee35, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the front end.
But from that angle, its actually looks good.

Its funny coz Dodge happens to sell some Hyundai models in Mexico.

Hey they already copied styling cues from the Gtr and EvoX with the Charger, why not copy other companies with this bug?! Oh Dodge...

I thought your joke was funny, Mike. Just sayin'.

Looks like an updated version of a Neon SRT 4

kopee35 says:

12:23 PM, 09/23/11

@ag4 wow! now dats a shocker, for how long has this been?

litewerk says:

Sounds like we're finally getting a glimpse of what will finally be a proper replacement for the Neon. Because this comes out after the Cruze, Focus, Elantra, Civic and Jetta, you can expect this to equal or better these cars in all the areas that matter. For the enthuaists on here, there is expected to be both an R/T and even SRT-4 model. Am I a little excited? Heck yeah!

"I just dont get why other people care what style of car another buys."

Because the owners are sitting inside the car, but everyone else has to look at it.

mito says:

I would rather have the Alfa. That front is hideous, looks like a neon. I think dodge should manufacture toilet lids, it seems they would have a better future in that industry just by looking at that hood. Now I have to go throw up.

camaro84 says:

01:16 PM, 09/23/11

Looks like Neon's spiritual successor.... it better perform well and not fall apart after year 1

dillworth says:

01:20 PM, 09/23/11

very interested in seeing details on this. Dodge needs a small car BAD. I have faith that it will be competitive, but doubt it will be as good as Elantra.

kplacer says:

01:46 PM, 09/23/11

If you have seen the Alfa, you'll know that the front end of it is no prize either.

This doesn't look bad.

rayzor says:

01:55 PM, 09/23/11

Doesn't look bad at all! Will have to wait for the full review

jhestaur says:

01:57 PM, 09/23/11

No, I'm with Mito. Prefer the Alfa front-end to this.

xprojected says:

GRRR! Little car is ANGRY! All the compacts seem to be getting slanted headlights now to convey "attitude"..

garrym says:

02:51 PM, 09/23/11

My first reaction is that this car certainly looks good, but I don't like to see it's butt so high in the air. If it performs as good as it looks, then Chrysler could do very well with it. Just ensure the quality is top notch.

rkr says:

03:37 PM, 09/23/11

Why, Why...JUST GIVE ME THE DAMM ALFA AND NOBODY WILL GIT HURT

j84ustin says:

03:43 PM, 09/23/11

@kopee, the Dodge Attitude in Mexico has been sold for at least the last two Hyundai Accent generations, as I saw both when I lived there.

kopee35 says:

03:58 PM, 09/23/11

@j84ustin thanks for the info! @garrym yeah dat butt is way up in d air lol!

mk40 says:

04:06 PM, 09/23/11

So far looks good, though it's a limited angle shot, so hard to really tell the proportions or how the body is shaped. Front looks masculine. Headlamps r pretty low slung & sleek like a 3-series so it balanced out the huge upturned, blacked-out intake opening. Also the bumper is straight across to help avoid the smiley face look.

ag4 says:

05:13 PM, 09/23/11

@kopee35, Its been going on for 11 years. The first Hyundai model to be sold in Mexico by Dodge was the tiny Atoz city car.

vantageman says:

08:48 PM, 09/23/11

Yeah the front from the Evo or GTR isnt original so you cant call a copy of a copy not to mention TECHNICALLY Chrysler did the single frame grill thing way before Audi years ago with its LHS and Sebring and numerous concepts. My issue with this car is that it looks like a focus and elantra combined which is pretty un original. Its odd since they have the Alfa behind them no excuse why the Chrysler Group cant put out original designs as beautifuly styled as the new Alfas are and really always have been. They set trends no need to copy use their designers......

biglee13m says:

09:22 PM, 09/23/11

Hexagonal grill? Hyundai?

hemi_ownz_u says:

09:52 PM, 09/23/11

@maxx18

Because it's been a distinctive part of Dodge's branding for decades. Why would anyone through that away? And for what? Something more generic? Good thing you aren't a product planner. Personally I really like Dodge's new twist on the crosshair. gives it more definition. Love the way the front end looks and how the whole car is shaping up. Finally a small car from Dodge to get excited about again!

hemi_ownz_u says:

09:54 PM, 09/23/11

Also I think the Alfa, well all Alfas since the 8C, look like they've been anally probed without consent. Hate the wide-eyed look. The Dodge looks much, much better.

gearheadbrazil says:

06:35 AM, 09/24/11

Why don't you just leave it as an Alfa and sell it?

I want a AlfaRomeo hatchback. Not a Dodge.

japanspec says:

05:27 PM, 09/24/11

Nice Alfa Romeo but what is value crushing is the Dodge Symbol
Dodge needs to focus on making cars for the Gangsta Rappers and
drug dealers like the charger and magnum

Wait a few years and Chevy will be bought by Renault or Peugeot
Then we will have some decent cars from chevy

Ford has already relied on the European design and you see they doing better

jscion says:

06:52 PM, 09/24/11

I think it looks fantastic. The front of the car looks really cool and from what I can see, so does the rest of it. Fiat was exactly what Chrysler needed and I'm excited to test drive this car!

uncanny_man says:

08:46 PM, 09/24/11

Hatchbacks the most stylish, lol ;) They can look okay, but still too utilitarian to be stylish.

mazda609 says:

07:17 AM, 09/25/11

I really dislike the high rake this car has. Looks like they found the fiesta sedan's rear end to be appealing, I surely dont.

kdoodoo says:

08:11 AM, 09/25/11

Why don't they just bring in Alfa Romeo and selling them in Dodge dealers? No need to make more ugly cars from Dodge.....Pirinfarina did a great job designing alfa, no need ugly hornet...

lolxd says:

08:35 AM, 09/26/11

Looks nice and attractive especially the Grill. If this thing will keep the interior of the Guillieta then this will be a seller.

Hope they bring the Fiat Panda as well.

chinz says:

08:56 AM, 09/26/11

The look of Alfa has gone downhill since the 159/Brera. Still, the emotional factor exists: would you rather go out with Uma Thurman or a Hooter girl, even if you know the Hooter girl is every bit as sexy as Uma?

Although in this case I doubt Dodge can undercut the Giulietta in the look department.

shaohsiin says:

11:33 AM, 09/26/11

Smash a Hyundai front into an Alfa body and add a Dodge badge. epic fail!!

wwwgraham says:

06:23 PM, 09/26/11

Dodge now has a very serious player in the compact market and it will come in many variations of engines, trims and yes, grilles. Wonder if it will get tigershark and Zf 9 speed down the line?

blklahot says:

01:27 PM, 09/30/11

WOW I think the car looks great I can't to jump behind the wheel. I want an STR in black please!!
