Configurator: 2012 Scion iQ

buildiq.jpg

I'm driving a 2012 Scion iQ for the holiday weekend. It's painted white, so I figured I'd "build" another iQ to my liking when Scion tweeted that its iQ configurator was live today. Unfortunately, there aren't many colors or wheel options yet, so I had to go with Old Man Merlot and the sole (16-inch) alloy wheel option. My car ended up at $17,809, though the configurator doesn't show my sassy roof spoiler.

Still, I like the map on the configurator that shows when you'll be able to track down an iQ depending on where in the country you live. All manufacturers should do this.

On a more serious note, I really am driving a 2012 Scion iQ for the holiday weekend. Anything you'd like to know about it?

would you put anyone you care about in the back seat?

I know it boasts the first rear window airbag but there are a few too bumpers out there that sit at about that window level and an airbag aint gonna stop them.

what do they mean by 3.5 seater? Is one side really smaller then the other?

First: Scion says that it seats almost 4 people comfortably. Drivers side rear is almost useless with tall driver so they say driver+passenger with seat back half way and rear passenger behind him. It makes sense once you wrap your head around it. I like the IQ...it makes so much more sense than the Smart Car. Scions may seem a bit pricy but they are nice inside and have a lot of stuff for the money. I looked at the xD and it was actually not bad....I like it for a run-a-bout.

No manufacturer should do this. Sell it nationwide or don't sell it at all.

That makes sense. I was wondering if there was some odd configuration to the back seat but it's just small.

It does make more sense then Smart car (although I do like the original diesel version) but I not sure it will be as much of a fashion statement. Without that it's hard to justify this car over a Yaris.

Super small turning circle is cool though.

And the Yaris has been rather well improved for 2012....the interior is actually not laughable. Toyota is actually trying to improve their products.

"No manufacturer should do this. Sell it nationwide or don't sell it at all."

That makes no sense. They should allocate the same amount of cars for Montana as they do for California? Production is limited in Japan and they have to make the SMART business decision to allocate the cars where they will sell the best. Hmmmmm send 100 cars to both Montana (where they might sell 20) or to Californian where they will sell 200.....tough choice.

Just re read the article and I believe there's a mistake. The turning circle is mentioned several times at 12.9 feet. I think you mean the turning radius.

The turning circle would be 24.8 feet. Still impressive but 12.9 would require the car to pretty much pivot on it's own length.

Now that would make it really cool.

It would be interesting to know the mpg you get, and how jumpy is the ride.

Is 75mph easily double on the interstate?

any way to configure it so it's not so ugly?

I remember getting a Chevette past 90 mph with barely 60 bhp (at most) so I think that should be no problem.

Too cheap to be one of the new long-termers (tg) !

$22,898. Loaded.

Holy cow, that's a lot for a micro city car with a small gas engine.

How do the ride and fuel economy compare to the Smart Fortwo and Fiat 500? How many people can you cram in there? Is there any room for groceries or luggage?
