In addition to the totally-crazy-probably-never-going-to-happen Audi Urban Concept, Audi brought a much more reasonable urban mobility vehicle to the Frankfurt auto show: the A2 Concept.
Compared with the barely two-seat Urban, the A2 is just a few tweaks and a realistic powertrain from being a real, mass-market car. And that's partially because this car is foreshadowing what we'll see on the 2014-'15 A2.
The A2 is constructed in the Audi Ultra fashion utilizing ultra-lightweight materials (carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer over aluminum) for a curb weight of 2,535 pounds from a vehicle that is 149.8 inches long, 66.7 inches wide and 58.8 inches high. Power comes from a 31-kW/h lithium-ion battery that produces 116 peak hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, with a range of 124 miles.
Along the side of the A2 concept is the Audi dynamic light. It appears black when dormant, blue when the owner approaches, orange when driving, and pulsing red when braking. The rear light is composed of five laser diodes that are invisible during normal conditions, but project a floating triangle in fog or rain.
And check the grille. Those are highly efficient graphite-foam cooling elements. Wonder how they hold up in a fender-bender...
