Spy Photos: Mercedes-Benz G...63? AMG

 MercG_AMG_dp04_KGP_ed.jpg

When Mercedes discontinued the G55 AMG earlier this year, literally tens of people were mortified. The G55 was the stuff of car guy dreams: It was built like a tank, looked like a tank and drove like, well, some sort of high-speed tank.

It was also the last Mercedes vehicle running the supercharged 5.5-liter V8 which is probably why it got the axe. But now there's a ray of hope in the form of this prototype testing in the American Southwest.

Here's what we know: 1) This car has a much larger grille opening than the G55 and includes vents where the foglights used to be. 2) The G-Class AMG is wearing 295/45 R20 Yokohama Advan S.T. tires. 3) Our man on the scene said that when it launched -- yes, he said launched -- the full-throttle roar was impressive. That screams 63 to us.

But while the 63 motor makes the most sense, we can't help but think that torque makes trucks great and the TT V12 in the 65 cars has torque in spades. Plus, it's already expensive, what's another 60 grand here or there?

"literally tens of people were mortified. "

That many?

Mercedes, is this really necessary? How about you spend a 10th of what it costs to develop this and put a decent transmission in the Fortwo? Or, doing something, anything to make Maybach compelling? or just giving Chrysler back some of the money you stole er, appropriated for your bottom line?

MB wants to do another "funny car"?

How about redesigning the G-Class instead, as it's a dinosaur; then (maybe?) think about performance models.

Yep... I want one.

If we are very lucky, this abomination will be sold in other world markets and will not make any further appearances on these shores. Knock yourself out, China.

Also, those seem like puny brakes for an AMG-powered something-or-other that almost certainly weighs as much as a small house.

Dan,

If I had the power, you'd be banned from commenting for, well, ever. Don't squash my dreams.

Just when you thought there was a little praticality left in the car, get rid of its off-road worthyness. What a waste of engineering.

This would have been so awesome in the year 2000.

This truly may be the worst vehicle with the MB badge.

I've had a lot of wheel time in a G55, and it is miserable. Creaks like an old boat, impossible to see out back, fantastic off road differentials ruined with the use of "sports car" wheels and tyres, side pipes reduce clearance, terrible steering etc etc.

If it was what it is meant to be (and I think offered in Germany as a limited edition version) - stripped down non luxo bare bones 4 wheeler with diesel motor and real off road wheels/tyres, it would be great again.

How can MB justify the developement dollars? The Hollywood and celeb crowd already bought this when it was the G55. They're certainly not going to risk people thinking they are still driving almost ten year old SUV's.

Oh, leave Mercedes alone. I applaud any automaker that will develop and sell a car that isn't like all the others. What's the G-Class's competition? Right. Nothing. Sure, Toyota makes the Land Cruiser/LX570 and Land Rover makes mistakes, but those have no soul. So put the biggest stupid engine in it you can and let us enjoy this glorious anachronism for as long as we can before every car in the world is legally required to run on lightly toasted tofu and hope for a better future.

Range Rovers are ten times better. They are better off road and they have better mpg. This thing does not even look like a $100,000. I don't understand why people would buy this over a Range Rover.

@throwback It probably doesn't cost Mercedes anything to update the G-Wagen because it's on a platform dating back to the oil crisis of the 70s. If 1/10th of the cost of R&D for this iteration was directed to the FourTwo transmission, I'd hate to see the result.

agran9 says:

@rsholland, I am absolutely scared that MB will someday listen to you - really hope they will not touch it any time soon. There are plenty of MLs, GLs, GLKs for those that want a modern MB SUV. Some things are better in real vintage.

although tend to agree with @lostboyz - AMG badge may be a bit out of place here.

for some reason, this car will always have an appeal to me...it is totally unnecessary and a complete waste of money, but a vehicle like this has a primal calling I don't think many of us understand.

It's heartening to see yet another strong entrant in the "pointless vehicle of the year" competition. But hey, it no doubt will be just the correct tough-guy image-thing for the select few professional athletes who will drive one into their reserved spaces at the stadium. BTW, is it just me, or do so many of those largely graphite-shaded alloy wheels just resemble any old wheel that needs to have the brake dust washed off?

jscion says:

Is there really a need for a high performance version of this??? So many other areas in MB's line that need attention. I can't believe they still make this thing!!!

"just giving Chrysler back some of the money you stole er, appropriated for your bottom line?"

BINGO! +one gazillion! MB are a bunch of corporate criminals.

I think this is what Land Rover is going after with their upcoming Defender replacement.

I mean this thing hits all the marks of what LR is planning (I think).

A Military vehicle (Land Rovers were also used in the Military) with some luxurious creature comforts (this is what LR is currently known for) and sold to civilians for a lot of money.

Looks like they are updating the electronics once again with this re-introduction as I see an adaptive cruise control sensor in the bottom right corner of the middle grill. Every time Mercedes states this car is going away it ends up coming back with a minor face lift/refreshing. I wonder if it will ever get Keyless-go and COMMAND with a separate controller. The sound the doors make when closing is enough to justify its place in the modern Mercedes line up, they really don't build them like they used too...

LOL - Wow, good thing they taped over the grille emblem. Totally fooled everyone.
