Bit by bit, the new Veloster-inspired 2012 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is coming to light. We've had spy photos before, and these simply build on those. The face is more heavily influenced by the Veloster than anyone expected with the same headlight treatment and angular grille replacing the current GenCoupe's droopy nose. The tail lights, too, are a departure from the smooth and bubbly direction the current car took. We also get a peek at the interior and the new seats.
This new Genesis Coupe is ditching the smooth, clean design of the current car in favor of bold, angular lines, is it the right direction or does that separate it from the G37?

The styling really doesn't matter all that much. The Gen Coupe came out just before the 300+ hp Camaro and Mustang, and Hyundai was left hanging with a car with 2 different engines and neither of them being faster than the 5 cylinder competition. As well as the fact that the Camaro and Mustang 6 cylinder cars are significantly lower priced than the Hyundai.
So, Hyundai needs to bring some A-class drivetrains and a lower price in order to compete.

I think it's the wrong direction. I understand the desire for a more corporate face (brand cohesiveness, etc.), but the Genesis Coupe, was, IMO, the best looking Hyundai product in the stable. Compared to the car everyone liked to put it up against, the G37 Coupe, I think it actually looked more attractive. Yes, the G37 was a little more mature and refined, but in the move from the G35 to G37 Coupe, Infiniti lost something of the voluptuousness of the old car. The GenCoupe had that in spades without being overstyled like the Sonata, or the new Veloster.
If I were in charge (be glad I'm not :) I would have mildly evolved the current styling and went to work on interior materials and driveline/chassis integration. I realize this car is a test mule, but the interior still looks super cheap, and that was a big drawback of the current GenCoupe IMO as well.

@church123:
I'm not really seeing a super cheap interior there. The seats and stitching look nice. The rest of the interior is filled with ungrained plastics just like every other mule out there.
That being said... I'm not digging the new exterior at all. I'd buy a Mustang if I was looking for something in this segment.

I agree, @church123, the Genesis coupe *is* one of the best looking Hyundais in the fleet. Improving the drovetrains and interior would make it even more appealing.

Comments on looks aside, Hyundai is making every other car manufacturer look down right lazy.

They are redesigning this car already? Wasn't it a brand new model for 2009 or 2010??

I'm 90% with Church here and I think the car as it stands is a bit in a marketing bind. It's not a muscle car for sure, but the performance is par with a v6 camaro or mustang. It may be sleeker and more refined than those cars, but is no where near as recognizable and the interior does absolutely nothing to leave a premium impression. So you have a non-premium car that has premium car styling cues and a tweener price.
I would have spent the money redoing the front end - the only part of the car I didn't particularly like, and made the 270hp turbo the base model. Update the interior to at least be a nice design and get it out the door for under 28k with decent kit and you'd have a hugely attractive alternative to the Camaro/Mustang. Instead they've taken every congruent line out of the front end and made it somehow blocky and overwrought. Pity, since the car is a great idea on paper.

That Italian site seems pretty legit.
That is unfortunate as I'm not a fan of that redesign of the front. The rear looks similar with a refreshed tailight design. But that front is NOT good.

If the Genesis Coupe look like the pics from Thatcarguy69 link...I will make sure I end up with a 2011 Genesis 3.8 Coupe Track version until they change the looks again to something more tolerable!
Love me some Hyundai but they starting to f/u up on the exterior design game!

I'm not too sure about the new exterior design, the current lines and blend looks just fine. I absolutely agree with above who mentioned the current GenCoupe is the best looking Hyundai at this moment.
what am I suppose to look at with those interior pictures? they look identical to the current Spec-R trim, red/black scheme with red stitching.
I also agree with one of you who mentioned they need to improve chassis/engine intergration. I don't think the car is currently horribly down on power when compare to the class rival, but well balance chassis and broad powerband is the key of proper rear drive coupe. The current GenCoupe has pretty bad drivetrain slob and torque mangement, it sucks the fun out of it. Get rid of the torque mangement, stiffer engine/tranny mount, and more direct shift linkage will make it a better car.

...Hyundai... why... I'm with church123. Well, in a way. Gencoup didn't look right when it came out. But that was ok, imo. It sort of had that x-factor for looking a bit odd. And so many aftermarket body kit came out as a result. Now, it just looks like another hyundai line-up. NOT what I'm looking for in a sports car.

I'm currently in the market to buy a new car right now. I test drove a Kia Sportage and let me tell you it was awesome! I'm also interested in the current Genesis coupe but since this is coming out i'm not sure if I want to wait or not.

I agree with all on the styling, but I don't think its that much of a departure from the current model (well, not enough to sway potential buyers) and I think the bump in performace will trump the cosmetic changes 330+hp for the new direct injection 6 and (rumored) 270ish for the 4.

This is a step in the absolute wrong direction. The current Genesis Coupe was attractive, had a more corporate face and allowed it to be compared somewhat to the G37. This new front end moves it back downmarket...and besides that it is absolutely hideous. I am more shocked that someone in Hyundai management thought that this was a good move - I'd be shocked if sales don't decline with this hideous redesign.

2012 Genesis coupe is available right now - a carryover from 2011. I doubt there would be a mid cycle refresh. I suppose this is the 2013 model year

Thumbs up hyundai. I like the new redesign coup for 2012. If i wanted a car that looks like bmw or benz, i would get a bmw or benz. People buy hyundai BECAUSE THEY ARE RELIABLE, AFFORDABLE, and they LIKE Hyundai styling. Stop trying to make hyundai look like the typical bmw, benz or lexus (people who buy t they look for approval from their peers). People who buy hyundai dont care what their peers think.
