Deal(?) of the Day: Groupon Offering Gallardo Rentals at 62% Off

 Lamborghini Groupon.jpg

So there's this website called Groupon, you may have heard of it, and today they're offering Angelinos a special car themed deal. But this isn't another shot at car sales-- which was a spectacular fail the first time -- it's a supercar rental deal.

For the big G, Chimera Exotics has cut 62% from its $1,299 daily rental of the Lamborghini Gallardo, offering up the Raging Bull for 24 hours for "only" $499. The catch? Only 70 miles are allowed. But with a fee of $3/mile once you crest 70, you could throw on another 266 miles with the money shaved off the original price.

These supercar rental fleets are everywhere lately (this one is less than two blocks from my apartment) and I'm torn about it. For the guys who just want to drive a car they'd never normally get to, it's cool and for $500? That seems like a deal. But for the guys who do it to show up at a club? Ehhhh, not so cool.

Full Groupon description after the jump....

Renting a car can be a great aid in everyday tasks, such as shopping for groceries or hitching on one's old horse and buggy to return it to the horse-and-buggy dealership. Transport in style with today's Groupon: for $499, you get a one-day rental of a Lamborghini Gallardo from Chimera Exotics (a $1,299 value). Drivers must be at least 25 years old, provide proof of insurance, and have a valid U.S. driver's license with a clean record.

Chimera Exotics' fleet of luxury cars beckons drivers to move between destinations with style and speed. In a 24-hour joyride, the Lamborghini Gallardo will coast through streets and highways with the grace of a dolphin ridden by a ballerina. The fully equipped car's e-gear transmission allows drivers to leisurely cruise with automatic transmission or kick it into gear with manual transmission at their discretion. Over the course of the day rental, motorists have a window of 70 miles to explore the city or voguishly check the mailbox several times a day; additional miles clock in at $3 each.

Insurance insurance insurance. I love the idea but God forbid it gets a scratch while it is in your possession.

Sweet... but if you work for Insideline, I am sure you have had seat time in this before. That too, probably, at a more exotic location... or perhaps even on a race track.

Personally, my dream is to own a house in South Germany - and have one of these parked there, so that I could make fun forays into Northern Italy... Yeah, I know... but its a dream.

Out here, I don't know if this would ever see anything above 2nd gear...

My car insurance includes rental cars. Not sure if they had Lamborghinis in mind though.

I wouldn't mind doing it once but the conditions and lack of a way to wind it out would make me lose interest fast.

With no set destination 70miles in a lambo would be over in like 45minutes....not fun.

A much better use for 500 bucks than the Bentley sunglasses. Insurance is a good question, most policy's only cover rentals for insurance replacements or leisure travel while the insured vehicle is parked somewhere. Don't know if the fantasy rental would qualify as a "leisure" rental.
