There, We Fixed it: 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Gets a Flower Vase

 1600_Beetle_flower_vase_DIY.jpg

During a drive of the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle in Germany last week, Director of Vehicle Testing Dan Edmunds simply couldn't come to grips with the fact that this car did not come with a flower vase.

And anyone who knows Dan Edmunds knows that once he gets a bee in his bonnet about something like this, there will be a fix come hell or high water. In this case it meant finding a home improvement store in Germany to buy some duct tape, a votive candle holder and some plastic flowers. Maybe not as elegant as a built in one, but hey, it beats nothing, right?

Read more about Dan's Beetle drive here, First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.

(The hand giving approval is that of Jalopnik's Ray Wert who no doubt played a part in the man vase. His story here.)

@icecubefosho

Actually, Ray Wert mentioned this very thing earlier in the day after some Canadian journalist took a picture of the vase that Dan and Ray created without giving them credit.

"Just to be clear, despite what the Toronto Star claims, Jim Kenzie did not build a "man-vase" for the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. Dan Edmunds and I did. He did, however, take a picture of it after we parked the car and we told him he had to cite us. And this is why we never trust Canadians."

So yeah, it was original - to Dan and Ray.

I'm feeling much better now.

At first Ray wrote it up with a lot of "I", "me" and "my" with no mention of my involvement. It was of course a "we" activity, and I actually applied the duct tape and shot the pictures using his camera and mine. No problem. I can take it. It was more important to his story than it was to mine.

The gloves came off when certain Canadians started taking false credit. Ray set the entire record straight, including, at last, my part in it (Thanks, Ray) and shut them right down.

Check the comments from "damncanadian" at the end of my 2012 VW Beetle story (link below) for his final explanation.

Dan's right -- I should have been more clear in my original post. I've updated it with the following note:

(Note: Dan Edmunds from Edmunds.com built the vase while I was driving. I used "I" for purposes of story-telling.)

I've gotta get in a "that's just not right" on the new Beetle.

And, Ray Wert posting on Edmunds Inside Line. Wow, just wow.

This is a unique idea for a flower vase for your car. You must really enjoy your flowers to make a flower vase for your car with duct tape. This picture is priceless.
