Well, this is probably the worst spy video we've ever seen, but we'll take what we can of the 2012 Toyota Camry.
These videos are being pulled off of YouTube left and right, so watch it while it's still around. And sit close...the quality here is...questionable. They do announce three trim levels, including -- as if we had questioned it -- a hybrid.

If you watch it at the highest resolution directly on YouTube in Full screen mode, you still can't see anything that tells you this is anything more than a warmed-over version of the current car, much like the new Civic. Still recognizable as a Camry=Good. Not recognizable as new in any real way=Bad.

There are some higher resolution videos on YouTube that clearly show that Toyota has dicovered what you get when you combine vanilla with beige. For all you sleep deprived readers, quit counting sheep and start counting Camrys.

@ ergsum
Vanilla actually tastes pretty good. Milquetoast would be more appropriate. As it turns out, Toyota seem pretty pleased with the result.

I wanted to think of a snarky dig at Toyota, but it just isn't worth the effort. The second most boring car on earth becomes just as, if not more, boring. That's all there is to it.

I hope someonewith a real digital camer submits video from this Toyota event. Not that I expect anything dramatic to be revealed. I'll assume some spy shots from road going Camry's will soon surface on Edmunds and some American mmotoring magazines. We'll all be underwhelmed I'm sure.

Hmmm, overall shape of this new Camry reminds me of... a car. I can't even make out enough details to pass an informed judgement, so I'll just cast ignorant aspersions like everyone else: *YAWN* me so bored. Same ol', same ol'. Milquetoast and vanilla. BEIGE. ;) Not that I think any of you are necessarily wrong in your assessments. Past history gives us a pretty solid base to cast aspersions from.
What was the point to even filming this? I kinda hope the guy got caught and kicked out. He deserves it for turning out such shoddy production.

What am I missing here? All you have to do is click onto the black Camry. Is that not the new car?
ed124c says:

Oh. Based on Mr Toyoda's reveal, I guess that black one isn't the 2012 Camry. The headlights are totally different.

YES!!! I've waited years for this car to be revealed!!! It looks amazing. To be honest I think that Toyota is trying to unify their products under one common grill design.

"Prius = #1?" I was thinking Avalon. Like a larger Camry, with only one engine, not the choice of two the Camry offers. You even used to have a manual transmission option with the Camry, though it looks like that's going away.

LOL Katy Perry's "Firework" opening theme song to a Camry unveiling. Ya blew it, Toyota. Maybe, if we get lucky the new model will retain the translucent turqoise radio/HVAC paneling.

Camry meets Sonata. Just from the blurry shapes, it looks like a toned down Hyundai Sonata.

Great Job Toyota. Throw in some cheesy crap song by Katy Perry, put a screen of fireworks, and put in a marching band that doesnt need to waste their time at a boring even like this. Oh, and I am sure the car will be just as boring and ugly as before. Just shows They really dont care about making quality cars. I would get any other car in that class over the Camry. Same goes for the Corolla and Avalon. Anything else.

After the recalls, the questionalble quality, and terrible reviews on this generation Camry, this is the most Toyota can do for a new generation Camry?!?! Has Toyota seen the Kia Optima, the Hyundai Sonata, or pretty much anything else out there???? This puts us up to 2017 before we'll see a REAL IMPROVEMENT in the Camry!!! TOTAL B.S.!!!
Obviously mass production and profit are the only concerns of Toyota. Their products have no passion and "Toyota quality" is now a thing of the past. Their service department even sucks. I take my Scion to Ford for servicing. Toyota hasn't listended, and continues to not listen to their customers!

This is obviously a evolutionary redesign, unlike the soup-to-nuts redesign in 2006.
The doors carry-over.
The windshield has more rake, for better aerodynamics, and a shorter hood.
Job #1 was to not screw it up! Freshen it without gilding the Golden Goose
Mission Accomplished.
Toyota said their 3 main areas of focus were handling, fuel economy and safety
If the Camry makes Top Safety Pick (The current one missed rear crash protection scores)
And the Hybrid gets to 40MPG, it will retain it's Camryness for years to come
Looks like they're on a righteous path......
BTW, getting sick of every political candidate and presser using Katy Perry "Firework"
But it's either that, or Eminem

The new rear seems OK, but that new headlight shape just has too many contrasting lines.

The only thing "wrong" (if even that) with the current Camry is the engine output and mpg could be better... also some styling refreshes are needed after this long on the market, but the packaging of the current Camry is exactly what a mid-size FWD family sedan should be... no headroom or rear seat cushion placement compromised for the sake of style... This is a mainstream sedan.. not a niche product.
And actually I'm willing to bet the current Camry 2.5L is quicker off the line than the Sonata 2.4L and around town is therefore quicker for all practically purposes. Look at this video and look at how long it takes for the Sonata to pull even, by that time the Camry would have already pulled in front of the Sonata if the Camry driver needed to do a manuevar like get over to the right lane when the light turns green. Like they say, when it comes to N/A engines, there's no substitute for displacement. So I wouldn't even say the performance of the current Camry 2.5L is good enough & it's mainly just the hwy mpg that needs a little improvement & perhaps a little more top end, but again it's give and take.. the Sonata probably has more top end but the Camry more low end, which is what american drivers value more.

these are not sports sedans or about racing but rather daily driving... like responsiveness in the urban cut & thrust. I actually think the Camry has the advantage in this regard... in congested traffic areas so common in daily commutes.. you need that oomph to hit that hole in traffic... a short responsive spurt of acceleration here and there.

If Toyota can drop the price of the new Camry by about a grand, then they will be into Hyundai Sonata territory.
And, if Toyota keeps its options unpacked-- meaning you can get a sunroof WITHOUT having to pay for a Nav system-- then I am interested.
I think everything will come down to the drivetrain. Toyota is a very large corporation. It shouldn't be difficult for them to come up with the most fuel efficient engine in the midsize class. (I think the Sonata's EPA numbers are not being achieved.)
stovt001 says:

@ed: I haven't checked recently, but I recall as of a few years ago stand-alone options were very limited with Toyota. Most options came packaged.

@mk40:
That'd be totally incorrect. Edmunds hasn't tested an auto 2.4L Sonata, but others have. MT got 0-30 in 2.9 for both; CR got 3.3 for Sonata, 3.5 for Camry. So much for that.
@ed124c:
Not correct, either. CR got 27 overall for the Sonata vs. 26 EPA rating (CR got 26 overall for Camry, same as EPA rating). IL's Sonata gave 25.7 during its term with them. And drivers reporting to the EPA are reporting an average of 29.9 for the Sonata (vs. 25.5 for the '11 Camry and 26.9 for the '10 Camry).
dg0472 says:
10:27 PM, 07/ 6/11
OK, thanks to the Sonata wrap-up, I can say I was wrong. They did track test an auto 2.4 Sonata. 0-30 was 3.2 vs. 3.1 for the Camry. But the notes indicate that for the Camry, that was "with automatic tranny in Sport, stability control and traction control off and power-braking to 2,600 rpm." Not at all realistic for city traffic. And by 0-45 the Sonata was at 5.4 vs. the Camry's 5.5. So again, there'd be no winning a race to the next light.

Well, what we all want to know is if there will be a dealer-installed TRD turbo available. You know, because this is essentially a plain, brown wrapper. Practically invisible. So, imagine gunning your limited edition turbo model Camry and giving those unsuspecting BMW owners a big surprise!
