Spy Photos: 2012 Toyota Camry Sheds More Camo

 Camry_dv04_KGP_ed.jpg

We've already seen the 2012 Toyota Camry completely undisguised. Sorta. And we've seen the headlight. This, though, is the best view we've seen so far of the upcoming midsize sedan. The finer details are hidden by this Magic Eye camo, but the size and shape here is very clear. Also note the band of camo tape on the side windows hiding the low beltline we'd assumed earlier. (Those of you who look at a lot of spy shots should go ahead and enlarge some of these shots and check the actual camo here. It's overlapped in a really cool way that effectively hides the headlights and foglight openings which we've seen.)

Out back we've got dual exhaust which would indicate that this is the V6 model and, again, more tape on the glass.

Pretty sweet, looks all new

Good for them with the lowered beltline! I am so sick of the "bunker" look on new cars.

Can't completely tell from the camo, but this looks more generic than I'm used to seeing from Yota.

I also cheer the lowered beltline. Hopefully once the camo is off we'll see signs of Toyota making good on its promise to make more interesting cars. Reliability and fuel economy have become the basic price of admission for this class that pretty much every competitor meets. It is going to take more than Toyota's traditional strengths to stay #1.

Let me add to the chorus about the beltline. I really want larger windows and have completely ruled out the Sonata for that reason. Lets hope the electronics content is also suitably competitive.

With Toyota slated to bring more "exciting" cars to market, and Honda going for more "vanilla", it should be an interesting decade.

From all angles, it looks similar to a Ford Fusion, no?

Looks like a Camry. What's this excitement about?

darda71 says:

Looks boring as ever.. from the side view it looks like the current model.. exciting and toyota can not be in the same sentence... Both Honda and Toyota have a boring appliance appeal.

igeekone says:

Lower belt-line will be an excellent change because I don't really like the poor visibility of most cars due to side impact strengthening. I'm very optimistic this will be the best Camry yet as Akio stated they are bringing fun back. I won't judge until I drive one.

2onefifth says:

the beltline looks exactly the same to me. The profile is nearly identical- I dont get all the excitement. I would hope its the best camry yet- every new version of a car is considered the "best" iteration of that model in terms of features, safety, technology, etc. Notice Toyoda didnt say "best in class".

YEAY.....!! I can't wait.....!!

Will it still be bland and boring???

jerintampa says:

MEH! Still will be boring... Camry = uneventful life!

merc1 says:

Looks like a giant Corolla. The current Camry is the best looking one ever (that doesn't say much), and now it appears by that shape they're going backwards.

Good to see the beltline lowered, otherwise to me it looks like the same old Camry. I maybe old, but I still like a sedan that looks good and performs well. Larger windows is a good first step, not expecting much else to get me excited about this Toyota product.

pearl says:

How big is it and how much does it weigh? If this car is 200 lbs heavier with the same powertrain, it will be beyond a slug. Seems that bigger and heavier is all the rage these days with many manufacturers which seems odd as CAFE will demand better mileage soon. Ford claims that they are trying to get lots of weight out of their line and the new CRV is supposed to be lighter, but I have not heard similar comments about any of the Toyotas.

bustaz0 says:

It's going to have a lower beltline than the current Camry!!!! Oh golly, why don't I grab my check book, run down to a local Toyota dealer and reserve mines ahead of time!?!?!?!

Please, it's going to need more than a lower beltline to make good on these "more interesting" promises. And based on the leaked video/rendering and these spy shots, I don't think Toyota has succeeded. So far is looks like and overgrown Corolla. And that's not a compliment.

bemanix88 says:

03:57 PM, 07/27/11

Pearl, why would adding 200 lbs make it "beyond a slug"? Use your logic! Does having a 6-footer in the passenger seat of a current Camry suddenly make it undrivable?

toyotapowerx says:

04:20 PM, 07/27/11

Guys, its a Camry. It pays the bills and allows Toyota to build such cars as the LF-A. Seriously, were some of you expecting a V12, quad turbo, all wheel drive, duel clutch 8 speed, high performance hybrid family hauler? This 'vanilla' design has always worked for Toyota, why stop now?

alaskanroads says:

04:57 PM, 07/27/11

1. Looks like a giant current Gen Corlla. 2. No noticeable curves or creases?! Look at the bumper! Giant plain & simple bumper. 3. They couldn't even incorporate the dual exhaust into the bumper.....Sad. Failure in the making......

Toyota says it is safer, a better handler, and more fuel efficient, in response to customer desires

What I would like to see from Toyota is some influence from the (Aussie) Toyota Aurion inside and out, and especially in the ride and handling. I have never been to Oz to experience one, but that car seems far sportier, as though it might be a real sport sedan.

jscion says:

07:38 PM, 07/27/11

Toyota has become QUITE boring lately and it doesn't look like that will change. Even though they're reliable, build quality and materials NEED TO IMPROVE BIG TIME for the price they command for their cars!!!

tjwrangler says:

08:06 PM, 07/27/11

I too think it looks like a giant Corolla, I wish it would have some detail in the metal, much like all the new Hyundai designs, at least they are interesting to look at.

Maybe with this new Camry on it's way, hopefully it wil still be able to fend off the main competitors such as Accord, Malibu and Fusion?!?!

"Pretty sweet, looks all new"

- Except for the shape of the greenhouse and C-pillar which is pretty much the same.

pei_asdf says:

sioxie says:

12:13 PM, 07/28/11

Looks like a it got a Civic rear, still looks bland though when it comes to design, not much to look at! greenhouse and C-pillar looks like the previous gen.

Hyundai and Kia still has my vote.... design wise!

WasAPasserBy says:

It will be bland...

....but will it blend?

ap2rich says:

04:43 PM, 07/29/11

all midsize cars with the exception of the hyundai and kia are a little bland and there's a reason why. if they didn't look the way they do people wouldn't give them a second look, their last generation models looked like korean camry's so they had to change the styling to compete in the segment. i would still be wary of purchasing one if i was in the market for midsize.

the current camry SE is actually a nice midsize car. clean contemporary lines, nice suspension balance between ride and handling, in fact all camry's should be tuned like the SE. i hope this SE takes it a step further in the ride and handling dept.

pearl says:

bemanix88: my point is that the trend in most new cars is towards bigger and heavier at a time when CAFE is demanding more mpg. The Camry 4 cylinder is adequate, but hardly a rocket. Adding more weight is exactly what it does not need, either for performance or mileage. I don't know if the new Camry will be heavier or not, but I just think they need to be trying to make it lighter in any case.

More hype than anything.

Who even cares about toyota anymore?
