Spy Photo: 2012 Toyota Camry Covered in Thailand

 2012 Toyota Camry spy f34.jpg

Hot on the heels of the leaked video of a dealer conference showing off a very blurry 2012 Toyota Camry comes these spy photos out the new Camry of Thailand. We're trading a naked car, 50 yards away shot via 4 year old smartphone for sharp, close-up photos of a heavily camouflaged 2012 Camry.

But this is not the nearly-finished (probably non-functional display ) vehicles we saw earlier and teased by Akio Toyoda. Instead, we've got a real prototype of the new Camry which Toyota says will surprise and impress buyers with the way it rides and handles. We can still see traces of the new design language, though heavily obscured and wearing place-holder headlights and taillights.

These spy shots illustrate another thing we kinda-sorta-maybe thought we saw in the blurry video: A return to lower beltlines and higher greenhouses. Look at all that side glass! Many people are switching to crossovers because of the visibility and returning beltlines to a reasonable height and giving sedan drivers more glass can only help keep them in the fold.

Blunt noses and tall hoods are all the rage now (thanks in part to European pedestrian-impact regulations). Nothing like Hondas from 1990, for example. I wonder how a high hood and a low beltline can look anything but awkward.

Ugh it looks like the last generation Camry from the back. Not something to aspire to...

All the secrecy still seems a bit ridiculous, but Toyota does earn a rare bit of praise from me for a lower beltline and resulting larger greenhouse. I'm all for that.

Hahaha.....sure it's a Camry but you sure care enough to comment. Lol

This is a hybrid, I just have a feeling! look at the dual projector headlight lens (prius like) and LED tails..

Interesting "place-holder" headlamps, It's using the Prius's LED lowbeam modules. Maybe this is the Camry hybrid? also, maybe the hybrid Camry will have more distinctive headlamps.

I wonder if Maytag shrouds their forthcoming appliances in a similar way.

What's everyone's problem? Not everyone wants a hard sports sedan. Camry excels in everyday comfortable driving, which is the majority market.

In the first photo, I like the stance. In the second photo it looks like it got kicked in the rear and hasn't settled down.

What more can be said. We have to wait until it is revealed. Remember, the styling is not at the top of the list. The drivetrain and suspension share the top.

Thailand Camry has different styling from American Camry.

So whatever we see, it won't be what we get anyways.

I don't like the Camry, but I have to give Toyota credit for giving it more normal belt line and greenhouse. I hate when I get stuck behind a new Ford Taurus and cannot see through it to go around, might as well not even give new cars a back window.

Maytags are reliable and according to last report Camrys will outrun anything!!! Now that's boredom for you!!!

Toyota better step up their game......The Koreans are set to take them over. Toyota needs a hit other than the pruis or its game over.

really not enough to tell what the next gen is going to look like but should be decent (I still think the current design is relatively clean and attractive). HOWEVER, the interior is just horrible compared to the competition - Accord/Sonata/Optima/Subaru all have much nicer interiors imo.

Here is the actual picture of what is hidden in the above pics. Looks quite impressive, pretty balanced, not overly designed like Sonata. Anyway, the actual performance of the car will set it apart from the others, not necessarily the look.

looks like Toyota is having no problem keeping up their streak of most boring and ugly midsize sedan in its class

mk40 says:

Looks like it has prius-like aero tweaks which should help reduce drag.

"What's everyone's problem? Not everyone wants a hard sports sedan. Camry excels in everyday comfortable driving, which is the majority market."

So does pretty much every other midsize sedan, but unlike the Camry they all have at least some interesting styling, good driving dynamics, or something else that puts them above and beyond. The Camry pays the price of admission for the class without doing anything else. This is an enthusiast site. While "good enough" may fool the general public, we'll support something that excels.

Based on the link provided by clear1, I get just a little bit of a Subaru Legacy vibe in the pictures from the front and the rear. Just a slight influence, which to me is an improvement over the current one. Of course, we all know there is and has been an ongoing joint project between the 2 companies which should bear some fruit in the not-too-distant future.

I'll also agree with ed124c in that I, too, like the stance in the first picture. And, as others have noted, I very much approve of a lower beltline with a bit larger window offering improved visibility. I find visibilty from the driver's seat to be a critical safety factor. So long as I'm paying attention, I have a better chance of avoiding an accident with a lower beltline. And, that is one of the traits of my current daily driver I'm fond of.

The camry is always has and always will be an appliance. Like a toaster, it's efficient and it does its job and THATS IT.

mk40 says:

03:35 AM, 07/ 9/11

SE version is not a toaster.. especially with the V6.

If someone get notice with this car and the new Civic , Toyota & Honda arent worried at all
about his car exterior design. They are working in fuel economy and efficiency.
Look the Civic, is conservative, but deliver 3-4 more MPG that the Elantra, all without 6 speed,
DIE. Thats show confidence in his products and the buyer valua that.

jscion says:

I will say the lower belt line and larger windshield is nice. Furthermore, I'm sure the '12 Camry drives very nice as most Toyota's do however that isn't the issue that needs to be addressed. Build quality is!

I wonder how cars like the Corvette get around the pedestrian-impact regulations?

dbnthedon says:

06:58 PM, 07/10/11

The Camry excels at being the number one selling car in its class for pretty much all of the last decade, if the interior and ride/handling are improved like stated it will continue being the best seller styling or no styling.

alfig says:

WasAPasserBy says:

The 2012 Camry will be styled bland/borderline ugly, recalled multiple times, easily hit 250k miles, have misaligned interior panels, and ride so comfortable that it will rival that of a sleep aid....

...AND AMERICANS WILL BUY IT IN DROVES!

ayejay5 says:

Driving experience aside, do people really think other cars look THAT much better than the CamCord? The whole “bland” thing is an unsupported carryover from the 90s, just like bulletproof reliability. I’d agree with the Hyundai and Kia being better but the American offerings? The un-refreshed Malibu and Fusion’s rear ends look a little like the designers gave up (Ford added strange indentations with one of the Fusion’s refreshes that, if anything detracted from the car’s look). Both are relatively slab sided. Face it; these are the most blandly styled American cars EVER. Where’s cab-forward, where’s headlight to taillight creases of the Lumina? They’re not there. Bland cars sale! I’ll award points for individuality and not being one of the 900-million Japanese car drones but the idea that cars of other origins are all so stylistically superior IDK. A super bland 1995 Camry looks far less archaic than a ‘95 Corsica or whatever was considered non-bland back then.

@billt9, About the body of the current Camry... here in Asia we have a few USDM Camrys running around and looking at them side by side the body of the ASEAN/Thailand Camry is identical to the USDM model, its only the front end and rear end that they change.

If the thoughts of driving a car for 300,000km with little or no problems and then giving the car to your teenage children or college kids interests you, then by all means go with the Camry.

Unfortunately, the D3 boys have never experienced this and can not relate. All these guys can talk about is the shape of the headlights. Sad........
