Bentley Confirms Porsche Cayenne Fighting SUV

 Bentley_Toureg_01.jpg

Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has confirmed to Auto, Motor und Sport that there is enough customer demand for the brand to finally produce a sport utility vehicle. Rumors of a Bentley SUV have been swirling since the Continental GT rose to prominence and have persisted through high gas prices and the economy explosion. But, now that things seem to be settling a bit, the timing is apparently right.

The new Bentley SUV will go head-to-head with the Porsche Cayenne (which it will probably be based on) and Land Rover Range Rover when it comes out, according to the report, alongside a new Mulsanne and Continental. This either means they're getting this thing out the door very, very fast as we're sitting on a new Mulsanne and a new Conti right now, or that we're going to have to wait for the next model cycle in, oh, 8 years.

So VW owned Bentley feels the need to compete with VW owned Porsche? Herr Winterkorn, please see exhibt A, General Motors. Yes I know, you're smarter than everyone else, and they won't really compete with each other. When can we expect the Lambo Golf?

To be fair, the average Bentley buyer is in a different price point than the average Porsche buyer.

The Porsche buyer dines on Beluga caviar. The Bentley buyer dines on Beluga caviar served on the bare backside of Miss Universe.

Looks better than Bentleys fist SUV the dominator.

Mistake. Mistake. Mistake.

It will likely be very ugly, and un-Bentley like.

Hey, why not? Which motor will it have? Go big and put the 12 cyl. in it. Just make it plush and comfy and expensive and there will be enough people in L.A., Las Vegas, and Scottsdale to buy it. Most expensive and exclusive = most desirable for a lot of wealthy consumers.

What is the point of having different marques anymore? Just merge Bentley and Audi and be done with it.

It will be interesting to see, it will probably be a Cayenne with a W12 right? I'm sure Bentley will find a way to make it look good.

Hello and welcome to ten years ago, when every luxury brand had to have an SUV. If I want a capable, yet unreliable English luxury SUV, the market niche has already been filled by Range Rover. If I want unreliable, moderately capable German luxury SUVs, then Porsche, BMW, Audi and Mercedes each offer at least one. Rappers, sheiks and sports figures will buy all they can make, however.

Why in the era of needing fuel economy does an "enlightened" German car maker plan their 15th SUV while canceling the export of all of their wagons except 2.

nice! just hope It's little bigger then Touareg or Cayenne...

man that bently front end does not belong on an suv for any god given reason.

ms_3 says:

Lame. Isn't Lamborghini also making a crossover? There is no reson for Bentley, Porsche, AND Lamborghini to all have crossovers!?! Especially since Audi does. VW really has too many brands.

If it looks like this drawing then it will be disappointing. Looks like a Toureg with a Bentley nose affixed to it. It would really cheapen the brand unless they do better.

STUPID!!!!! Stupid stupid stupid!

To be able to most adequately describe how dumb this car is, where's Lewis Black when you need him?

Wait... I just re-read the title. Why would Bentley build a Porsche fighting SUV? Aren'y they under the same umbrella of VW? What the hell is going on here? Ask GM how inter-brand competition worked out for them. Pontiac, Saturn and Olds are all no longer because of it.

msmlexis says:

This will be Bentleys 2nd SUV there first was a concept only like 5 were made. I dont see why they need an SUV.

It doesn't matter how much we all hate or love this product or the idea of it - my bet is that it will sell. I lived in Vail, CO for a while and believe me, those idiots will buy expensive SUVs like hotcakes (only time I've seen a Lambo SUV in person - at a Domino's parking lot no less!)

sportyaccordy says:

This is hideous, and a terrible proposition.

But it will sell like hotcakes.

So it's pretty much the status quo for Bentley.

Granted, Bentley did kind of need a revamp of its image as that stuffy 'Grey Poupon' business would not have flown with the likes of "The Situation". I just didn't think they'd have to rebadge Volkswagens to do it. A $300K Touareg? I feel physically ill.

I agree with the statements that have been made.

My only question is, why?????

@cz_75

Great post! I got a good laugh from it so thank you. I think we all know that there will still be enough rich, know-nothing-about-cars a-holes to buy this. Why not make 2 SUVs, using the Mulsanne front end for the other one?

Looks like a hearst.

I guess if you die, go out in overpriced uglyness.

Could be worse though. Look at infinity, acura, and lexus suv's.

This suddenly doesnt look so ugly.

raguilar says:

All you moaners and groaners, Bentley is building this car to expand their lineup and most importantly, to make money. You are probably not the target demographic for this vehicle, you know too much about cars and what they're supposed to be. Car manufacturers build cars to make money. Look at the Aston Martin Yaris, Sir Stirling Moss has one! SUVs make legitimate business sense. When BMW built the X5, you people bitched and people bought them anyway, when Porsche built the Cayenne, you people bitched and it is now Porsche's cash cow. Manufacturers will build and sell cars they can make money on whether you like it or not.

msmlexis says:

I wonder if anyone knows the picture is a photoshop.

ed341 says:

This SUV would likely have a starting price far above a loaded Cayenne Turbo S. Not really a competitor in the eyes of you average Bentley owner.

X5s and Q7s are for well-to-do folks, and are nice. Bentleys are supposed to superb, and be for those who buy them because they are, cost no matter.
