2012 Mini Coupe Priced at $22,000

2012_coupe_prf_mini_fd_9998_0620112.jpg

In addition to revealing the "fastest accelerating Mini ever" today, Mini went ahead and dropped pricing for the U.S.-spec model. It starts at $22K, but of course, that's for a Mini Coupe with the weakling, normally aspirated 1.6-liter engine that makes all of 121 hp.

For a truly fast Mini, you'll need to come up with $25,300 for the turbocharged, 181-hp 2012 Mini Cooper S Coupe, or for the 208-hp John Cooper Works version seen here, $31,900. That is all.

$22K for a teeny car with a teeny motor only looks good when you compare it to $32K for a teeny car with a decent motor.

Wow. They're sure proud of that car and apparently do not take the 500 as a serious threat.

For that kind of money, why wouldn't you just take a Miata? Same practicality, grunt some where between the base and S models, and correct wheel drive, plus the top goes down.

It looks cool and everything but that pricing is just ridiculous.

@stovt001

Yep, was thinking the exact same thing about the Miata.

This is a lot of money for... not much.

Some people will pay for image, and, say what you will, this Coupe looks a lot more butch than an MX-5.

I do wish it was cheaper. And that I had a better job. And that I could afford a toy car.

I think they messed up by build this on convertible platform, which ended up making it heavier than the regular hatch. I doubt its chassis is stiffer either. Don't make any sense what so ever for weight loss

Oh , 350 bucks cheaper than the Countryman....

I think Mini likes to keep themselves somewhat exclusive, as opposed to being one to under cut another brand. They know there will be a buyer because the price isn't insanely high. But its high enough that you sorta have to really want it. Its like buying the BMW of Character...

I'd pick a a stripped one for the track. But im not sure about having 2 seats as a DD

What a hot mess of ugly! GAG.....its just all over the place.

Car people would get a miata or the regular mini, people who buy for image will get this. At least I know what kind of person is driving next to me if I see this on the road.

It is hard to find a new Miata these days that isn't close to 30K. If you don't car about a top that folds, then a Mini coupe S is cheaper and more powerful than the Miata. (I can't afford a JCW, so I am ignoring it.)

It would be interesting to compare a Mini coupe with a Miata.
Make it so, #1. (Whoever you might be.)

Based on the portly convertible model = thumbs down. This car had potential but they took that away by adding weight.

ed124 - weird, my local Mazda dealers show most in the high 20s too. I think this might be related to two things:

1. Japan's issues
2. Nearing end of the year so all the base/lower priced models have been sold

It is remarkable to see the way the Miata's price has climbed from being a super affordable roadster to a fairly pricey little car.

I would say it is dealer and/or consumer preference. Most NC2s I see are fully loaded GT PRHTs. So consumers just don't seem to be buying the base models, which are still fairly affordable. Whether that's because they want that or that's all the dealer stocks, I don't know (but knowing how dealerships opperate, the later option probably has at least something to do with it) but there you are. If you can find a more basic model, they're still fairly affordable.

I'm as big a MINI fan as they come but I just don't get this vehicle. Is a Cooper S not sporty enough?

I'm a big mini fan. I think the price is just right.

Nice going.

Genuinely ugly.

herrstreet says:

I dunno, Mini is bordering on self parody with this car. First problem I see is that it looks almost the same going forward and backward. Good thing the hatch has that spoiler...

Next, I don't see an improvement in performance, function or appearance here. It's just a mini that you can't drive to buy a toaster oven with. Jeesh.

kjgood says:

Gee, what a really nice color combo on the photo examaple.... if your goal is to look clownish. Is is just me, or does the Mini coupe's peculiar roof treatment give you the impression a bald guy wearing an ill-fitting toupee? Making that mess of a styling exercise even more noticable by the color choice on this example is even more looney. On looks alone, this car fails in my mind, let alone the highish price, added weight, and diminished utility. If there's a point to this car, it sure escapes me. At least the roadster version can have the top lowered.

Just wait for the Fiat 500 Abarth. At least thats what Im hoping for anyway.
