Spy Photos: Scion FR-S Prototype With Sport Body Kit

 w_FT86_sport_BP_may11_priddy1.JPG

When we posted spy pics of the Scion FR-S yesterday, we got more than a few emails from readers and co-workers asking if we were sure that was the FR-S and not, say, a new Scion TC. It wasn't a new TC, but clearly people didn't think that was a very exciting sports car to look at regardless of how it may drive.

Toyota / Scion / Subaru seems to have anticipated that reaction and are currently testing a sport body kit complete with Supra/Celica not-quite-STI worthy wing. There's also a deeper, much more aggressive front splitter, side skirts and rear valance. It's a cool package (still torn on the horizontal bits off the wing) that adds some menace to the FR-S. Now we just need to ditch the 17" Subaru Forester wheels.

This makes it look better I suppose. Minus the sections sticking out of the wing, but I think other cars are still going to be better. This car seems small and I somewhat dislike it due to its long development. While I think it should be a Toyota, Scion needs something sportier than a TC and the other two need to be dismissed.

The Subaru version should have AWD at least optional, but this will be a decent car and Im sure many will buy them as they look some what sporty. But I would take a Genesis, Mustang, Camaro, even an RX-8 over this. But maybe when I see the production version my opinion may change.

Did Brenda Priddy & Company happen to have a stopwatch handy while they were shooting photos?

I like the package, but I hope there is a delete for the spoiler. Oh, excuse me, I mean the wing.

Still looking at this with childlike optimism. Which means I might cry if the car is a big letdown, and I might cry if it is great. Just call me Ed Boehner.

Just to re-interate, those are not STI spec C wheels, people!

That rear wing = fail.

Hopefully that tasteless wing if optinal by itself and not part of a package. I would were a g-string at the beach before I drive a car with a wing like that.

That rear wing equals like, 50 extra hp dude.

good thing they put camo on that wing, it helps hide it so well.

xorbe says:

The wing is awful even obscured with camo, ouch. I wonder how many pounds the the body kit adds, and at how much cost.

ghostcell says:

It could just be the subaru version lol I mean it has the giant wing and the rear lights are kinda different

You guys are incorrigible... they tacked on a STi wing on top of the smaller wing/spoiler in the previous spy shots for testing purposes only, hence the unsightly side projections on the bottom of the wing.

all of the concepts didnt have a huge wing, what makes you think it will some standard with this monstrosity? an option perhaps, but no way is that going to be the standard wing. on the subaru version however...

I agree with ghostcell 100% This has to be Subaru's version of the FR-S. The wing (i'm not too fond of), the wheels, and the more aggressive body kit. When have you ever seen Scions come out looking racey? X-A, X-B, TC? Subaru (cars) are KNOWN to have a tuner-esqe look. WRX, STi, even the Legacy! Subaru version for sure!!!

madfast says:

My bad. looked at the pics again, and its another wing, not tacked onto the small wing. Still, there's no way this is going to be standard on the toyota/scion version at least.

Just to re-interate subytrojan, Those are STi Spec C rims wich were also used on the forester sport in America. Here's a link to help ease your mind. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=979639

rice rocket fans....start salivating. might look okay without that horrible rear wing. Sure, could understand the need if this is capable of reaching 200mph but i somehow get the feeling its not going to..hhh

whitewalls on a dumptruck if you ask me...perhaps harsh at this stage so i'll wait to see what the final product looks like

Oh great. They decided to add a side of rice to the fliet they were working on. Way to f it up, Toyota.

The concept version or go home.

I do not see an intercooler or any kind of intake suggesting this has any kind of performance potential (if it's a suby)

godofgambler says:

I actually love the wing/spoiler! It really show this is an import car. People who against it usually like domestic cars. It's similar to Americans=NASCAR and F1 Racing=Non-Americans.

gtrguy2012 says:

Yeah go ahead and take 5 more years to develop what i'm sure will be a an underachieving and overrated car. I lost all interest in this thing last year, P.O.S

agentorange says:

"Now we just need to ditch the 17" Subaru Forester wheels."

What's the beef? Is it now illegal to have tyre sidewalls that can be seen with the naked eye?

atomic13 says:

That's not a wing, it's the flux capacitor.

Seriously, I just want to pick it up by the handle and carry it like a lunchbox.
