Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon Coming To the US in October

e63 amg estate.jpg

Yes, this is going to be another West-Coast automotive journalist fawning over a high-horsepower, RWD station wagon. I fawned over them when I was an East-Coast kid and now that I have the soap box, not much has changed.

Oh, except power outputs. Remember when the '97 Corvette came out with 345 horsepower? That was awesome. This station wagon (err, Estate) has 550 horsepower (with the performance pack) from a 5.5-liter twin-turbo DI V8 and a 7-speed MCT transmission. Torque is a whopping 590 pound-feet (516 without the performance pack). Mercedes will also be bringing an E350 4Matic Wagon with AWD and a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower.

The 2012 E63 AMG Wagon will be available in the US this fall, but it is unclear if they'll be sitting on dealer lots, or if like the last time, they'll be special order only.

Finally, Cadillac has a rival. Your move, BMW....and I don't mean an M5GT.

Right on, Mike! Touring > GranTurismo

I bet they wont sell more than 50 all year.

Amen Mike. While you're at it BMW, we'd love the M3 estate! I would literally put one on order today if that were an option.

And same goes to you Audi... bring us the RS6 Avant and S4 Avant. There still are enthusiast drivers here in the United States that welcome the additional space a proper wagon offers.

How sick is it that as a young guy, several of my dream cars are .... Wagons. I'm only supposed to lust after two door supercars right?

Maybe if enough cool halo wagons happen, the regular versions will catch on and replace the pointless vehicles we use for utility now.

Interesting thought actually...offer enough useless "halo" wagons and maybe the useful ones will catch on...I dont think it will happen but something to think and talk about. I would love a 20K small wagon to bop around town in.

I still don't see how this is any less useful than a regular E350 4Matic Estate.

All of these are more useful than the Raptor if you drive on pavement.

Yet, fawning over the Raptor = acceptable.

Fawning over 500hp wagons = "what are you going to do with that, idiot?"

The reactions should be complete reversed. Strange.

Can you tow with an AMG? Would one want to take your AMG camping and drive down a dirt or muddy road? How would it ride with super low profile tires on a long trip? I could go on and on.

Kevm: I agree that both vehicles are rather stupid....I think the Raptor is slightly less stupid since it is designed for some purpose (high speed desert running) but I can think of much use for an AMG or CTS-V wagon however...

bodyblue says:

I should have said CANT think of much use for the AMG wagon. Super high performance family cars are just silly IMO. Even cars like the Flex Eco-Boost are stupid....but at least it would help towing on that unit I guess. The market tells it like it is...and "super" family cars are a teeny tiny part of it. The reason is that few people see a use for such cars. They just dont make much sense. But hey, if somebody wants one and has that kind of disposable income, more power to ya!

@bodyblue
Most of us don't need the performance our cars are capable of. Especially trucks/SUVs don't need the engines they have now. I think my old F-150 had about a 160hp V8 and towed boats fine. I think towing is more torque dependent anyways. I guess I couldn't go 90 with one, but really should you? Trucks really have issues with center of gravity and stopping more than cars at those speeds. Either way, I'd bet most of the trucks could pull just fine with a current turbo I-4 and favorable gear ratios and cars really "need" even a little less to go around at a speed limit of 70.

But, people WANT faster truck/cars. So, now most trucks have >300 hp cars now have >200-250. Not a need, but a want. I'd argue a "truck" for work that does the 1/4 in 16 seconds is more stupid than a GT sedan that does it in 14s.

No one needs a wagon that does the 1/4 in 12s, but that is pretty cool someone is making one. It's like saying a mustang GT doesn't have a role because no one can use that performance on the street.

Also, I'll bet most the guys with an AMG/M/RS type car have something else they take camping or tow their boats with or don't do those activities.

Eventually wagons will be back in style I have owned a RS4 avant and the thing was amazing and I didnt use it for towing or something crazy it was my street car I have a F-150 to do the dirty work.

bodyblue says:

I agree that the car itself is an interesting product, but even though I love wagons I would never spend that kind of coin on one if a similar sedan was available (I am talking 100K plus AMG type stuff).

I had an 08 E63 wagon. Easily quicker/faster than my 02 M5 or '06 M3. Ultimate sleeper car. Waaay overpriced if you pay sticker, sucks fuel like a '60s Hemi, but worth every penny when you outrun a C6 Vette or standard 911. Just don't let your teenager drive it. Those paddle shifters are too tempting.
Think of it this way. What other vehicle can you stuff your bird dog in the back and go 160 on the way to your hunting spot?

"Can you tow with an AMG? Would one want to take your AMG camping and drive down a dirt or muddy road? How would it ride with super low profile tires on a long trip? I could go on and on."

You can't really tow much with an E350 either, and the car is a wagon for the extra space inside - not everybody is going to require towing or dirt road capability. If you tow and camp/soft road frequently a CUV is probably a better choice anyway than any regular wagon.

I'll concede that with its lack of AWD, poor fuel economy, and fancy/more fragile wheels and tires it does have somewhat less practical capability than a regular E350. But otherwise it still carries the same amount of stuff and people for what I'm willing to bet 90% of wagon buyers would need.

But that's not really the point, this is a niche vehicle and its purpose is to be a bad-ass wagon. I personally wouldn't buy one either, but I certainly wouldn't call it useless.

You mean 155. And I know one that'll approach 190...

The E63 AMG with the Performance Package has a 186 MPH top speed (electronically limited). Or you can have Brabus raise the standard car's limit.

How does that work with the gentlemen's agreement? Uber-special stuff gets a pass?
