Jaguar Greenlights C-X75 Concept for Production

cx75-1-1600.jpg
The Jaguar C-X75 is now more than a concept -- it's a very early prototype of sorts. You may remember the outlandish super coupe from the 2010 Paris Auto Show where it showed up sporting twin micro turbines that powered four electric motors.

At today's press conference in London, Jaguar officials laid out a more road ready powertrain consisting of two electric motors -- one in front, one in back -- and a 1.6-liter, turbocharged engine developed in partnership with the Williams Formula One team.

Jaguar officials didn't throw out any power numbers, but they did promise a 0-60 mph time of less than three seconds. And if you're not in a hurry, it will run on electric power alone for up to 30 miles and up to 300 miles with the help of the gas engine. Yes, this will be a Volt times ten.

That goes for the price too. Jaguar said it only plans to build 250 road going version of the C-X75 and they'll run a cool $1.15M each. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2013.

No turbines? too bad, that's what made this car so exciting.

Nice ride. I'll take one please.

You can leave the Toyota LF-a (insert joke here) to the Paris Hiltons of the world.

That's cool and all, but I'm pretty upset about the lack of turbines. Without it's just another super rare museum piece for the filthy rich. If they are going to do such a limited production run, why not really make it something that pushes the limits?

Did you hear that..? No, It wasn’t a turbine engine staring up. It was the sound of my toilet flushing because this news actually caused me to shit a brick. Bravo Jaguar!

I really don’t care for the turbine engine, though I always thought it was perfect for a hybrid because of the ridiculous amount of time it takes a turbine car to get up to speed (and it will run on anything flamable). Just shove anything in it that has power. Just don’t start promising one engine and deliver another like you did with the xj220. or is that too late?

I'm not sure what the article means by " it will run on electric power alone for up to 30 miles and up to 300 miles with the help of the gas engine. Yes, this will be a Volt times ten." The Volt betters those distance numbers on both gas and electric already. Two way different markets as well.

It is too bad that the turbines aren't in the running. Supposedly Jag had invested in the company that produced them, giving rise to the hope that they may be planning to make a similar car to the prototype. My guess is that the turbines are both too loud and too inefficient.

Whoever is susprised or dissapointed at the fact that it will not have a turbine powered power plant is either
A) a child
B) high
C) retarded.

This is the real world. Turbine powered cars make no sense at all, even in the hyper car segment.
