Mitsubishi Stopping Production of Eclipse, Endeavor

 2009_mitsubishi_eclipse-gt_rear_08-ch-as_1_1600.jpg

Perhaps the biggest news here is that the Mitsubishi Eclipse ad Endeavor are still in production, though, not for long.

The automaker announced that Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder and Endeavor production would cease at the company's Normal, Ill plant. Gallant production, however, will continue at the facility and Outlander production is scheduled to ramp up in Ill.

In our "What's New" for 2011 feature, we noted that the 2011 Mitsubishi Eclipse would soldier on with reduced ride height (half an inch), a blacked-out roof, standard alloy wheels on the GS and standard heated leather on the GS sport. How could that fail?

The Endeavor, too, got some new features for 2011, like standard Nav and Sunroof on SE models.

Mitsubishi is currently sitting on a 180-day supply of the Eclipse, and a 23 day supply of the Endeavor (which I'm seeing more and more of lately with dealer plates.)

So: Should we mourn or be happy that they're finally gone after a long battle with relevance?

Does Mitsubishi make ANY vehicles any more?

I doubt that many people will miss either of them. I certainly won't; there are too many better vehicles out there.

They should throw in (out?) the Galant as well. The (very) few times I see one, it's a rental.

So sad. The original and 2nd gen Eclipse had some joie de vivre.

It's a shame to see the Eclipse go. It's the car that could have been. But as far as I'm concerned the Eclipse was dead in 2006.

Yea Its sad Mitsu faltered so quickly. This past decade they fell on their faces. They had a GREAT eclipse in late 90's, great design. Then 2000 comes and they mess it all up, and 06 didn't improve the styling. It was ok but REALLY girly, like almost at Beetle territory. Galant was nice in 2000s but copied the 06 maxima and messed that up.

They should have invested and a new identity, copy mazda perhaps? Lancer was fairly decent and looked great. New SUV's look decent too honestly, but very low volume. I doubt they will survive and are headed towards suzuki as ok japenese car brands in the US.

Wait...they're still making the GALANT? I thought they'd stopped that a couple of years ago. Do they still make the Diamante, too?

Here's another question: why are they trying to make front wheel drive "sports" coupes? Who actually buys those?

I mean, do these people just walk into a car dealership and say: "I'd like to buy...a CAR."

And then the dealer replies: "Sure, I have some CARS right over here - would you like two doors or four?"

"Two, please."

good. the only good Eclipses were the first and second generation. these got so far away from that formula. no turbo engines, no AWD, heavy, bloated.

I've wondered that myself...

I'm sure that Mitsubishi is looking at their market share and wondering "WTF Happened???" Mitsubishi was such a great niche brand in the 80s and 90s, that just fell on their face after 2000. In my opinion, most Domestic, Japanese, European and Korean brands have all achieved a level of style and perfection that just doesn't exist with Mitsubishi. Most of their cars are dull as dishwater, with the exception of the EVO of course. The Eclipse, while not horrible looking, is just not a popular vehicle configuration today. The whole "personal coupe" thing in the 80s and 90s has nearly died completely, with the odd exception of the domestic pony car resurgence. I mean, how many Hyundai Genesis coupes do you see in a day? I might see one a week.

We'll have to see what Mitsubishi morphs into. Killing off the Eclipse and Endeavor is almost a "who cares" moment, but it should allow them to focus on producing a few core models well. With the radical words from their CEO, it wouldn't surprise me if changed into an all-electric vehicle company, at least in the States. Mitsubishi certainly has a lot more resources to pull from than upstarts like Tesla... maybe they'll be successful.

Mitsu really started doing worse after Diamond Star Motors was disbanded. Chrysler seemed to have the help and experience needed with the American market and Mitsu the engineering needed to make small cars. The first Dodge Colts of the 70s were re-badged Gallants. The 2.5 V6 in my Stratus just turned over 140K with one set of plugs and wires and burns less than 1 qt of oil every 6000 miles. The Pentastar in my new Avenger has a lot more power but is no smoother...it is quieter however.

Surprised. Hard to believe the company that builds the Evo can crank out crap like the Endeavor. But the worst vehicle Mitsubishi makes is that Galant. I've had two as rentals (thanks Hertz) that were as uncomfortable and poor driving cars I've experienced since the fine days of J-cars, Tempo's and K-car variants. Ford's recent success should prove to fringe automakers like Mitsubishi that today's market demands great product. The absence of great product spells demise for Mitsubishi.

dscain says:

I really like my '09 Galant. It may not have all the new toys that some midsize cars have, but it has everything I need. It's comfortable, economical and dead-solid reliable, too. And I like the fact that I don't see copies of my car everywhere; there's nothing wrong with being different.

The Eclipse's fall from it's heyday's in the 90's should be a warning for what Honda's doing these days by designing their recent cars like Civic for college chicks.

Ask the owners of Civic SI & Altima coupes.

I agree the Eclipse is no longer competitive and IMO should have been replaced with an Evo coupe years ago.

Basically, Eclipse/Endeavor/Galant all ride on the same platform. That platform is being killed and rather than introduce a replacement platform (with associated retooling costs) Mitsu is killing those name plates in favor of there better sellers, which are all based on the Lancer platform. Lancer platform manufacturing will be added to the Normal, IL plant, commencing with the Outlander Sport. Hopefully with a power bump.

Good riddance, the only compelling Mitsu product in the U.S. market is the Evo. A car that is shockingly good, particularly when weighed against a product portfolio that is shockingly bad. The company has really fallen since the 90's.

I suffered in a Galant rental recently. Lousy car, and here I thought I was making a better choice than going with a Sebring.

@roadburner....I live in CT...we have really lousy winters here. I tried to have a RWD car once ('98 Camaro Z28) back in 99. The car had traction control, four studded snow tires, and it still would not get out of its own way when we got anything more than a dusting of snow. It forced me to find a winter beater ('94 Aspire) which was a terrible car and cost $$ to maintain it.

So that being said, I miss the choices we used to have for FWD Sporty cars. We used to have everything from the Acura Integra/RSX to the VW Gti (which we still have) with a lot in between. Now its the GTI, Civic, ??? Altima and Accord are bigger. So small FWD sporty coupes are missed, at least by me!

I live in Michigan; the first car I ever owned was a 79’ Camaro and I never went off the road or got stuck in the snow, and that was with regular all season tires and a 16 year old behind the wheel! I owned an old RWD Grand Marquis and a RWD RX8 and never had any problems getting around in the snow with either of those cars. My current car is a G8 w/snow tires for the winter and this car is absolutely excellent in the snow.

It really bugs me when people are shocked that it’s RWD and yet I’m able to somehow drive the car year round. The main thing is to use appropriate tires; pretty much anything should be able to get around with little difficulties if you have a good set of snow tires.
