2012 Lexus LFA Road Trip: How to Launch an LFA

 lfa_4tt.jpg

Technically, there's no launch control in the Lexus LFA. That doesn't mean they didn't give us a few pointers for how to get the best 0-60 time.

And then we tried a few methods of our own. Jacquot shows you how to do it should you ever end up in an LFA and need to get going very, very quickly.

Hold on a second, there is LC on the LFA. Your Lexus rep didn't tell you that?

Please see if this works

When set, launch control enables the vehicle to accelerate from a standing start at 4000 rpm. Launch control uses overall optimized control that considers vehicle acceleration performance, stability and clutch durability. (Do not use launch control on public roads.)

Setting the system

1. Ensure that you are seated well back in the driver’s seat with the seat belt fastened. Make sure that the passenger is also seated well back with their seat belt fastened.
2. Start the engine. Firmly depress the brake pedal with your left foot and release the parking brake. Continue to depress the brake pedal.
3. Select SPORT driving mode.
4. Select shift speed level 7.
5. Pull the “+” paddle shift switch to select 1st gear.
6. Pull the “-” paddle shift switch and hold it for 5 seconds. “LAUNCH” will be displayed on the meter.
7. Release the “-” paddle shift switch.
8. Depress the accelerator pedal firmly. Continue to depress the accelerator pedal. The engine speed will be automatically maintained at 4000 rpm. The vehicle is then ready for launch.
9. Release the brake pedal. The vehicle will launch forward.

Once the accelerator pedal is released completely, launch control will be canceled and SPORT driving mode will be engaged.

Start-off acceleration

Start-off acceleration depends on how much the accelerator pedal is depressed.

So it is as fast as a TTRS, and costs 4x more?

Makes sense.

@ursaud,

Man you are dense.

Toyota, I mean Lexus, the world yawns at your supercar. Big Deal!
Money is better spent focusing on a 3 Series killer. The IS350 did not cut it.
Even the G37 beats the IS350 in my book. The ISF is an ugly C63AMG. Both of which are luxary GT500 type muscle cars, and NOT driver cars. And what is the LSF supposed to mean?? Are you trying to say, you could build real sports cars if you wanted to. Then stop your talk, and DO IT!

If you have to do all that to launch, even the Mazda2 will beat it to 60.

LOL, wait until you hear that you have to wait around 10 minutes or so between runs with LC, and every LFA has only 255 launches under LC. However, I believe the point is there is an LC system to get the quickest runs 0 to whatever...
I wonder how long it takes other LC systems such as those in Porsches and GT-Rs?

Why did you say there is no launch control system??? 2001gs430 has posted the correct way to launch the LFA.

lostboyz says:

can you two lexus PR folks just knock it off already, you aren't even good at hiding it.

One word: Burnouts!

So a ZR-1 is 60x as fast as walking, and costs infinitely more?

Makes sense.

I am a paying customer, just happen to know something about the car.

You would think this car would have launch control considering how high tech it is. I find that pathetic and a mistake by Lexus part, I mean even a corvette has launch control.

@ lostboyz,

I will count on you from now on to tell the GM fanboys to "knock if off" when they go nuts...

IMO, it's better to go nuts on a supercar than on something like say oh... Buick Regal?

bimmerjay says:

I wonder why the Lexus reps wouldn't reveal that the car had LC, maybe it was deactivated on that car?

akula1 says:

Great. All these publications testing a $400k car they don't know how to operate. I'll just knock off 3 tenths to all your figures since my guess is probably more accurate than the 'tests'.

We need Hyundai competing in Formula I , so they can offer a car like this , F1 engine and
all for $ 60,000.00. What do you think ?.

audipilot says:

I can't believe that a car such as the LFA designed to be the pinnacle of sports car technology does not have launch control. You can make the argument that its a true drivers car and blah blah blah...but when it all boils down to it, its become pretty much standard technology in most sports car. I believe even the VW GTI with the DSG had launch control...I think Lexus should have shelled out the extra cash it would have taken to write the software.
