2011 New York Auto Show: 2012 Honda Civic (on Sale Today) Displayed in NY

IMG_2159.JPG

It's not uncommon for a manufacturer to show off a car at one of the big auto shows even though it's already shown the car perviously. Every once in a while it's a car we've already driven. It's rarer, though, when a carmaker decides to have a reveal for a car that we've driven two different models of (Si and base coupe) and that is, as of the conference, officially on sale.

Of course, as the car has been driven and out for a significant period of time, there wasn't a lot of new information. Honda says it is operating at 50 percent and has an 80-day supply available.

So, go read the stories and look at these pics of the not-even-remotely revolutionary 2012 Honda Civic.

Can anyone say Boring? I like the current gen Civic but its been out 6 years now, and this will extend it to at least 10. Its practically the same, the interior may even be worse, the tail lights look like a last gen Camry on the sedan, the front is THE SAME, I can't barely see a difference. And this was DELAYED? What did they do, make it look worse? Honda is totally messed up and off path, the Americans have surpassed the Japanese! (Maybe except Mazda which is an exceptional value for fun to drive cars)!

zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

So sad what's happened to Honda. I was just reminiscing about how amazing their products were in the mid-80s..

The Honda leadership is probably designing their vehicles for Honda loyalists. If you're looking for a reliable, fuel efficient vehicle with a high residual value....... and better driving dynamics than the sofas-on-wheels that one notable competitor sells...... then Honda is your choice. Others may meet or beat Honda in one area or another, but for many people it's the combination of value, efficiency, and reliability that steers them to Honda. In this case, moderate styling sells. Radical styling changes will only serve to alienate Honda's repeat buyers, and may not bring in enough new buyers to offset.

Needs more hatchback and double wishbones.

What happened to you Honda? You used to be cool.

It does look like a cross between a Volvo S40 and a used bar of soap. Probably Irish Spring. No, that would be green.

Sweet 2006 civic in those pics.

Yawn. And this time good enough is gonna hurt Honda. (see: Elantra, Focus, even Cruze).

wtf did they do to the interior? What a ridiculous hodgepodge of asymetrical failure.

@lost: its not drastically different from the old interior.

"wtf did they do to the interior? What a ridiculous hodgepodge of asymetrical failure."

Agreed, that stands out a lot for me.

What a FUGLY design

This has to be one of the worst "all new" cars I`ve seen.

What a terrible interior. Wow. It blows my mind that this will still sell.

that dashboard is an abomination. lol. i can understand their commitment to ergonomics and such, but this seems neither visually appealing or very functional. no offense to the designer, but it looks like a picasso painting. but if that's the look they were going for, then i suppose they got it right.

i think in this case "different" is supposed to appeal to younger buyers. I'm not so sure that younger folks want a wierd looking dash but Honda seems to disagree. The exterior styling is definitely going to attract older people looking for reliable, anonymous transportation.

Boring it is...but one thing it is not is overweight. It is actually nice to see a car LOSE lbs instead of getting tubbier and tubbier a la GM.

cr_driver says:

12:19 PM, 04/20/11

Haha bodyb.

But how many pounds this car lost?

By the way, the new Impreza did shed a good amount of pounds, 160 less.... that`s quite an achievement.

when you reuse platformsn and powertrains you tend not to gain weight. if you change platforms, add technology, sound deadening, larger wheels, etc. weight goes up. Focus weight increased as well.

Is it me or do the "new" compacts; Jetta, Civic, Corolla, Impreza look blandly similar?

bodyblue says:

Nobody gains weight faster then puts in underachieving powertrains like GM however. The 1.4 turbo is looking more and more like a loser the more new cars are introduced....the Regal turbo is just as bad compared to the Kia/hyundai units'.

bonzjr says:

It sure doesn't seem like they... (yawn)... did much... (thud) ...

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.

What does any of this have to do with the fact that the civic is light because its on an old platform? Nothing.

bodyblue says:

Just trying to keep GMs stock as low as I can get it. :)

the people who complain usually can't afford one or just bought the current generation.

I agree that one of the most worth buying cars is the Honda. I like the performance it shows for every model. They really have good quality parts. I just bought Honda tail light to replace my other one. They really have good stuff.
