Who Cares About New Stuff? 1973 Ferrari GTB/4 Daytona of Top Gear Fame

1973_ferrari_daytona_rig.jpg

Even if you don't like looking at old cars that seem hopelessly slow and crude alongside modern metal, you'd take an extra long pause at this car if you were at England's Brooklands Museum on May 18.

This '73 Ferrari GTB/4 Daytona (chassis/engine numbers: 16531) is one of 158 right-hand-drive Daytonas imported to the UK. It has 26,851 original miles, and the paint is Blue Ribot Metallic. The car hasn't accomplished any particular feats in its 38 years on the planet, despite having a front-mounted 4.4-liter V12 rated at 352 hp at 7,500 rpm, but Prince Charles apparently drove it for a week in '73. We hope he went to redline at least once. Top speed is a heady 175 mph on this car, and it would take about 5.3 seconds to deliver you to 60 mph.

More importantly, the Daytona was loaned to Top Gear. Richard Hammond drove it in November 2008 in a race against Captain Slow, who was captaining an XSR 48, the fastest-ever diesel production boat. Video of that after the jump, plus more photos.

This car has charisma but a rental V-6 Mustang could probably lap it. $1.8million for a car that could be dusted by a rental? I've got a hard time swallowing that.

Hands down my favorite Ferrari ever and near the top of the list of what I will buy as soon as I win one of those $100 million+ lottery jackpots.

Looks amazing. Yes, a modern Mustang could go faster around a track, but that's like saying a service-duty 9mm is better than a 16th century katana. Well, yes, it IS better in some respect, but...

What if you where a kid in a $20k Mustang and beat some rich guy in $1.8million ferrari, tell me you're friends wouldn't hear about that.

The interior -- not shown here -- is probably the most beautiful in any postwar car, and the sound of the V12 is otherworldly.

Who cares whether it doesn't beat some plasticked-up 2011 Mustang, Camaro, etc. This car is on the ultimate cool list. Would I take one of these over 10 Mustangs? In a heartbeat.

One of the most brutishly pretty shapes ever on a car. This one joins the Dino 246 GTS, Porsche 356 Speedster, Jag E-Type and select few others on The List of definitive cars of the last century.

And -- it looks great in blue.

@bmw_m5, if you were a kid in a $20K Mustang, you would be asking the the guy in the $350K Ferrari for a job.

I do like the Mustang, however. A lot.
