Spy Photos: 2013 BMW 3-Series GT

These are the first spy photos we've seen of the confirmed-for-production BMW 3-Series GT. And while BMW guys from coast-to-coast have a bit of a soft spot for the old BMW hatchback 318ti, this is not, generally, what they were hoping for as a replacement.

Based on the ideas defined by the 5-Series GT, the 335GT is a sort of coup-ey, hatch-ey contraption with a higher ride height and higher seating position than its non-GT sibling. The drivetrain will be an assortment of 4 and six-cylinders with the range topper being the 335GTxDrive35i...or something similar with a turbocharged 300-horsepower I6. That is, of course, unless the M3 goes all GT.

Each day it seems we're getting news that Porsche is working on something smaller and lighter, while BMW is constantly embigenning, (even the Mini -- have yous een a Countryman?), raising ride heights and slapping a hatch and AWD onto anything they can find.

Expect to see it on a show stand at the Frankfurt auto show.

I think Audi has a better product in the A5/S5 Sportback (which they have yet nor will import to the US) and their A7. Both are more coupe-like rather than crossover like, as the 3 GT and 5 GT are.

I just hope that BMW does not kill off the 3 series Touring in the US with this thing. :(

We Americans have nobody to blame but ourselves for buying these heavy, awkwardly styled monstrosities.

A proper wagon would likely have more space inside, less weight and look better.

Bring us the M3 touring and call it a day.

Definitely M3 wagon! Or at least a 335 wagon with a manual transmission. I would buy either one of those in a heart beat!

BMW's strategy of late is to fill every conceivable niche with some sort of activity vehicle. It remains to be seen how this will play out. Over the years, the 3 series has been one of the most universally praised vehicles ever built, yet BMW's other models try to distance themselves from this successful formula. I hope they know what they're doing.

Why all the negativity? Things change. If they didn't you might be riding around in a 36 Chevy, like I did when I was a kid.

My negativity is based on several points:
1) BMW's used to be about driving pleasure. Monstrosities like the X6 are rolling compensators which don't even provide the practicality of the questionable X5. Style over function.
2) The 5 GT is heavier, uglier, and provides less cargo volume than the wagon. So what's the point.
3) Based on #2, I'm assuming that the same paradigm will hold true with this new 3 GT.

BMW keeps introducing models which are less interesting to me. I assume the younger generation somehow is supposed to be into these kind of models. No thanks, I like my 03 530i and any BMW much newer just doesn'nt excite me. But, to each his own.

Same thing has been happening to Subaru, except they've had AWD all along. Outbacks have been getting bigger and taller since the late 90s.

BMW has been doing strange things for a while now. As long as the 3 Series sedan comes with a manual tranny and sport package, I'll be okay with them. Oh yes, and as long as they continue to make the M3, of course. I hope their move toward four-pot turbos heralds a move toward lighter cars as well.

Let me first start by saying I have been such a big fan of BMW since i first drove a 318is in manual at the dealership. The 330is M-sport, the M3 and M5 are simply awesome cars.

But WHAT IS GOING ON WITH BMW LATELY?!

The X6 is easily the WORST looking BMW I have ever seen (not far behind the Aztek) and the 5-series GT is the 2nd worst vehicle in BMW's lineup. I'm taking a guess, but this 3-series-based SAV is probably going to be the 3rd worst looking vehicle in BMW's portfolio. A real shame..

@altimadude05: The Outback is a bit larger than it was, but remember, the Outback used the same body for about 10 years. It was time for Subaru to bring the Outback in line with other conemporary CUVs. The interesting thing is that the new Outback, compared with the outgoing model, is not really much bigger-- just a bit wider and taller. I will admit that, after driving several of the new Outbacks, compared to my '05 Outback it drives and feels like a much biggr car. But I think I can get used to it. My brother owns one and it is a really nice car.

I guess it's going to be that much harder to replace my ageing E91 wagon with an equivalent something from BMW. First no 5 series wagon for NA, and now likely no 3 series F31 replacement either. That's it, I'm moving to Germany where the world still makes sense!

I hope BMW keeps the wagon in the next generation for the NA market. I have a 06 e91 and hope to replace it in a few years with the next 3 Series wagon. You get the benefits of the 3 with extra hauling, what's not to like. Why would I want a raised version of a weird hatchback? Buy an X3 then.

Really? I mean, really? C'mon BMW. There are better ways to squeeze more profit out of your model lines than this that will also play much better to your image (bringing the 1 series hatch to the US for starters, the A3 shows it can be successful here).

I hear what you guys are saying about the wagon version, but being realistic, wagon sales in the US are pretty low. And an M3 wagon would sell in absurdly low numbers. So I get why BMW, along with many other automakers, would cut their wagon offerings. But Americans are also not going to buy one of these GT cars over one of BMWs myriad proper utility vehicles (X1, X3, X5). It's clear the majority of American buyers like there categories clean cut (want style, buy a coupe, want to carry a couple other people, buy a sedan, want some extra utility, buy an SUV/CUV). BMW is trying to slice this pie too thin at this point. And they're adding too much butter to the diet!

I hope the CTS and CTS-V wagons sell well here. If they do well maybe BMW will keep the 3 series wagons coming and maybe offer more engine/transmission combos for the US. What I don't understand is how BMW offers AWD in just about every 3 series but then doesn't offer the 335 wagon to the US.

Agreed. I hope they sell like crazy (though they probably won't). A wagon is just about the most useful vehicle configuration available (outside of a minivan). So the Chevrolet Malibu Maxx seats five and has that stupid notchback rear and sales tank. But take away a seat and add some big shiny wheels and a BMW emblem on it and suddenly they are everywhere (at least here in CA). More wagons, less "crossovers" please.

I think that BMW wastes too much money, I would rather see something like a Chevy Nomad. I do not see how this is better than what they already offer.
