Spy Photos: 2012 Audi RS4 Avant

audi_rs4_avant_f34_1600.jpg

Man, do we love wagons. It's not like we have an S4 wagon in the U.S. right now to compare these shots to, but even so, it's clear this test mule cranks up the heat about 10 notches from our long-term 2009 A4 Avant. And then you see the front brake calipers, well, and the RS5 wheels and you know that this is the next Audi RS4 Avant. Probably it's a 2012 model, probably we'll see it in September at the Frankfurt Auto Show, and probably we'll never see it here.

But it's highly likely we'll see an RS4 sedan like before, and just like this wagon and the RS5 coupe, it'll have a direct-injected version of Audi's 4.2-liter V8 with its hearty-beef-stew exhaust note and a twin-clutch automated manual transmission. Figure around 440-450 hp coming together somewhere past 8,000 rpm, around 320 lb-ft of torque and something like a mid-4-second 0-to-60-mph time.

I would like to take this vehicle a step further and add an ALLROAD variant.
All this power with some ground clearance for the powdery stuff. Oh that would be wonderful.

But yes, this is a beautiful vehicle.

Wow, such a hot wagon. I'll add to that and say that this is best looking wagon I've ever seen IMO. I have a 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 for reference, so I'm an untypical American in that I like hatches. In a perfect world, I'd like this Avant body with the supercharged V6 from the S4. I could maybe even convince the wife that it is a SUV.

When did this place turn into an Audi drooling fest? Yes, its a good looking wagon, but I'd still take a CTS-V over it.

Oh whats that, that wagon is actually sold in this country! Well, talk about having your cake and eating it too....

If something like this could tow my boat...I would never look at a truck/SUV for the rest of my life. Guess all I can do is dream

i think they should just drop the turbo V8 from the next S6 and S7 under the hood

If this stateside (especially as an estate) it will be replacing my M5. I love the new S4 but not enough kick.

stoppre75-

Right about the same time it turned into a CTS-V drooling fest. Cool car, but it doesn't have awd. That nixes it from a lot of people's lists.

And besides. I think the Audi looks better.

PLEASE AUDI BRING THIS TO THE US.

So long as you don't go nuts with pricing, I would order one today.

Audi,

While you are at it, please bring a 6sp manual 3.0 TDI A4 AWD Wagon!!!, I would have bought a 2.0 gasser but it's not even available in a manual!!!... it's not all soccer moms in the USA!

I guess I've been jaded by all the donked cars around here. The big wheels look silly on this car. And overall, it doesn't do much for me. I guess I'm just not into the Audi fanclub.

Sadly it appears neither one is sold in this country (meaning Canada).

So as a dream car I would have to go with the Audi. Despite the over sized rims it's a better looking car.

The AWD factor totally slipped my mind, that is a huge plus! No V wagon in Canada? Thats rough...

Its a good looking wagon for sure, but Audi knows they're going to sell a couple hundred of these max. Sad though, as it seems amongst the enthusiasts wagon's are really making a comeback since they're so gorgeous and versatile. But they still carry a taboo among suburban moms who MUST be seen in their 3 ton SUV's that they can't handle driving straight down the road.
