Holdens Have Actually Come to the U.S.!

ChevyCaprice.jpg

Yesterday, Magrath checked his calendar to find it was indeed time to re-blog the biannual "Holdens Coming to the U.S." rumor mill. Something about the prospect of a Chevy Maloo just makes him all fizzy.

But lo and behold, eight hours later, our crack in-house spy photo team (aka, me driving home with a camera) captured this Chevy Caprice roaming Los Angeles. Coincidence? I think not. Michigan plates, no cop paraphernalia. Oh, and those snazzy plastic wheel covers are just there to throw us off the scent.

Maybe it's just a plain-clothes prototype for the LAPD, or maybe that rumor mill was really onto something. Hmm, let's just go with the latter.

I look forward to it. Now if Ford could only field *something*, all three American automakers could join the party.

That is not an attractive car at all.

Fortuitous.

Yikes, this makes the G8 look even better. Good grief, someone tell GM to stop making all their non-luxury cars look like Hertz rental lot escapees. The Cruze, Malibu, Voltron (oops, Volt), Traverse, etc share a common design language: nearly invisible.

Nice timing sir.

Sadly, jeepsrt and blueguy are right. It really is odd to think Pontiac actually made the more attractive version. Chevy just can't seem to design any good rear ends, and the rest is just a plain slab side. Now a little restraint might be a wise strategy seeing as how I'm already over Hyundai's swoopy sculpted styling, but this goes beyond restraint. I will disagree with Blueguy on the Cruze, as I think it is actually pretty sharp, and of course the Camaro and Corvette have very distinctive styling, but the rest of the lineup is sadly kinda generic. Odd, since Wellburn really does know his stuff.

Leave it to Chevy to turn this into something that I don't want to look at. The back looks like a Malibu Maxx.

lostboyz says:

good to know it will still look like an impala, don't have to learn a new set of tail lights to watch out for.

That thing is ugly.

ufoninja says:

That is some bland styling.

I really like the idea of RWD V8 Sedan from Chevy, but this will be the sleeper of the century. BORING. It's really too bad they killed Pontiac. I actually liked the styling of a lot of their cars. I'm really over the standard wedge shape overything seems to be going to now.

audidriver says:

About a month ago I saw two of them in a caravan heading north on I5 in Camp Pendelton. They had a third car in their group as well. I just didn't have my camera with me to take the picture.

travelingman79 says:

Sleeper styling is just fine for me. If the day has finally come when the public (not just popo) can buy a RWD full-size Chevrolet with decent handling (I enjoyed the Commodore I drove in New Zealand; are you listening GM? Please don't "Americanize" the suspension tuning.), a powerful V8, and (relatively) low price, I'm in.

jriz says:

To be fair, Chevy didn't style this. Holden did, then Chevy slapped some badges on it.

@ audidriver:

I'm sure you had a cell phone though....You gotta be quick thinking!

06scooby says:

I think they made it look plain jane for a reason... I can't imagine a production one for sale wouldn't have more stylized bits starting with the wheels.

ruckusrider says:

12:52 PM, 03/30/11

And this is what we call effective camouflage.

blueguydotcom says:

That rump screams Chevy. Look at a pic of the Cruz or Traverse. That's a Chevy butt.

albook says:

I'm already pretty sure this isn't coming here, but really, we don't want this 5 year old car! The G8 was 3 years old when it got here! Chevy should just focus on a Camry-killing Malibu....

panerai250 says:

I for one am very excited about this rwd platform,I was so sad:( to see the G8(pontiac) go. This might be just a pre preproduction car. Im thinking better rear end, some nice wheels, who knows. I dont care how It looks right now,Im just happy that 2/big 3 have high performance, four door family sedans, good news Indeed.

bankerdanny says:

I don't care if the design is boring. Does it offer a 360hp V8 and RWD? If it does the next time I'm in the market for a car (probably a couple of years) I will certainly head to the Chevy showroom. I missed my window on the G8 and still kick myself everytime I see one.

firstwagon says:

04:47 PM, 03/30/11

Nice but a Charger has 390 HP and is rear wheel drive too.... and it doesn't look like a bland, invisible rental car.

Might make a good unmarked cop car though to replace the last of the aging Crown Vics.

pontiaksolsice says:

Looks like an Impala..ugh

carluvr1 says:

this is the PPV version of the Holden caprice hence the different rear end of all the other commodores around australia. This is the US version hence the regular bulb lit tailights instead of the Aus LED tailights... it's a luxury limo/personal similar to the mercury/lincoln town cars... but for US consumption for police it's toned down with cloth interior and boring addons, still your able to get the 6.0 litre V8 or 3.6 litre SDI v6

Two out of three aint bad.......Meatloaf :0

SirTodd says:

That's what happens when you take the license plate in the trunk area and move it to the bumper. It's probably more cost efficient, but it leaves too much empty space on the trunk. So what does Chevy do? Flatten it and put a big chrome strip. I miss the G8.

bodyblue says:

10:03 AM, 03/31/11

I know I will be flamed for saying this but here goes: What part of "RWD V8 sedans are are life support" does not everybody understand? Gas prices are going up, not down...the Obama regime is only going to make things worse on the regulation front.......CAFE standards are forcing car makers into different offerings.......the market for these cars is virtually GONE today and if gas prices hit $4.50, which they WILL, the market will be DEAD. Higher end rwd cars will probably still sell enough to keep in production but the low cost rwd V8 car is a stupid place to put any money in.

OK boys...flame away! :)

witnessx says:

11:51 AM, 03/31/11

I want to habeeb, I really do, but GM makes things difficult.

bodyblue, RWD doesn't automatically equal turrible mpg. That 'eAssist' thing could propel a V6 varaint into the 30s and leave enough leeway for a V8 version.

witnessx says:

05:10 PM, 03/31/11

I just realized: this could very well be a buildup to an April Fool's joke from GM. If it is, I'm not going to be laughing.

mymaxima says:

06:02 PM, 03/31/11

Well, this looks exactly the same model of GM-Korea, called Veritas, with less chrome. It was competing with Equus in Korea, meaning that it was selling as a premium sedan. I was not a fan of the hind side of the car but overall shape was quite attractive. Reminds me of luxury edition of G8. In that sense the design was successful, but was not a favorable design for Koreans.

dougnash2009 says:

Nice. GM being GM. Massive AND unattractive. "Rental Car Escapee..." is a classic! Looks like they're trying to bring back the Ford 500. Delicious.

notabigdeal says:

Its not gonna happen. don't get my hopes up.

How did the company that made something with as much attitude as the G8 come up with that.

david216 says:

This hideous Holden looks like the last generation Camry.
