ZAP!: The Complete History of the Batmobile

1960s batmobile photo by james riswick.jpg

We're not sure what the connection is between carinsurance.org and Batman (a subsidiary of Wayne Enterprises, perhaps?), but we're duly impressed by the insurance site's graphical representation of the Caped Crusader's rides over the decades.

Click through to see what we're talking about, the chart is quite lengthy.

( Carinsurance.org )

Most of us weren't even aware of most of the Batmobiles shown below. A Porsche 904? Corvettes? An E-Type Jag? Riswick picks the Tim Burton Batmobile as his favorite, while Takahashi thinks the latest Tumbler and integrated BadPod trumps all others.

What's your favorite? (Note: If you say "Clooney's" your Edmunds account will be terminated)

What a cool write up, especially to a Batman geek like me.

The Burton Batmobile has been my favorite for a long time, especially after seeing one of the real cars in person--just awesome.

That said, the Tumbler is absolutely the baddest thing I have ever seen. Tumbler for the win.

Why would it have to be one or the other? If I had one, I would drive the Tim Burton Batmobile every day.

I still want a Tumbler, but as cool as it-is, that thing is not well-suited for trips to the local grocery store.

In my universe, the George Clooney and Val Kilmer Batmans/Batmobiles never existed.

1. I like Burton's version the best.
2. The '87 Vette-based Batmobile looks just like the new Camaro.
3. I keep going back to the 1980 image, for some reason.

I would pay a lot of money for this to be made into a quality poster. Please make this dream come true!

Conspicuously missing is the Batmobile from "The Dark Knight Returns." Not only would that one beat the tar out of any one on this list, I can only assume it was the inspiration for The Tumbler. From www.batmobile-history.com: the base vehicle is a tank and "This is the largest Batmobile ever, easily straddling a three lane highway. Batman mentions how he "modified her during some nasty riots" 15 years prior, and that the only thing that can damage it "isn't from this planet." It easily shrugs off gunfire, grenades, and rocket launcher attacks, and offers its own array of heavy weaponry. In addition to its offensive capabilities, this Batmobile is equipped with an extensive medical bay." From what I remember, the operating table inside it is on a gyroscope and isolated from vibration as well...simply awesome!
