2012 Ferrari FF Unveiled

2012-ferrari-ff-pro-1600.jpg

Ferrari has unveiled its first-ever production four-wheel-drive model, a front-engined V12 four-seater GT that not only replaces the 612 two-plus-two coupe but also aims to attract a new kind of "all-roads, all-seasons" Ferrari customer.

The new 2012 Ferrari FF is named for its four seats and four-wheel-drive. It was designed by Pininfarina under the direction of Ferrari's own chief designer, Flavio Manzoni.

The first Ferrari of modern times to accommodate four full-sized adults and their luggage, it will be unveiled at next month's 2011 Geneva Auto Show, and go on sale soon afterwards.

2012-ferrari-ff-front-1600.jpg

Ferrari hopes it will appeal in particular to buyers who usually use all-wheel-drive saloons or SUVs for winter driving and especially ski trips at this time of the year.

The revolutionary Ferrari has an all-new, longer wheelbase chassis that rides on a new all-independent suspension that incorporates the latest-generation magnetically-adjustable dampers and standard Brembo carbon ceramic disc brakes.

The four-wheel-drive system, claimed to be around 50 percent lighter than comparable applications, preserves the desirable rear weight bias of recent V12 Ferraris. Called 4RM (for 'Ruote Motori') the system is unique to Ferrari, using the car's electronic systems seamlessly to direct torque to the front wheels when slippery conditions demand it, but mostly leaving the car in its desirable (and understeer-free) rear-wheel-drive state.

Though the FF is more versatile than traditional Ferraris, Maranello counters any suggestions that it is "soft" by giving it a newly developed 6.2-litre V12 with just under 10 per cent more swept volume and 22 percent more power than the 612. It's mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The FF also gets the efficiency-building measures introduced in the California, including stop-start and smart charging to improve economy by about 10 per cent. The FF engine produces 650bhp at 8000rpm and 504lb ft of torque (up 16 per cent) at 5000rpm. Despite these higher outputs, CO2 output is dramatically slashed from 470 to 360g/km (23 per cent) while combined fuel consumption improves from a distinctly average 13.8mpg to 18.3mpg.

The FF's 0-62mph acceleration time of 3.7sec also undercuts the 612's by 0.4 sec, while its 208mph top speed beats the 612 by about 10mph.

Ferrari claims an impressive kerb weight of 3,957 pounds for the FF, undercutting the 612 by 110 lbs. despite the new all-wheel drive system.

This and the fact that the FF is almost identical in length and width to the outgoing 612, (and only 30mm taller) suggests Ferrari has scored a considerable packaging coup, if not built a beautiful coupe. -- Reporting by Steve Cropley

Good job Ferrari. I love the shoebox look. This looks much better than the 612.

Upon my first look I was shocked....but it's growing on me. I really thought all those spy shots that showed a larger rear end were just to fool everyone...

Anyone want to bet against there being a future Ferrari SUV?

Well thats interesting. I really don't like thier new front, it doesnt work as fluently on this car. It looks like the shooting break concept....but odder.

Anyone remember the BMW M Coupe from 1998 to 2001? Same profile. Didn't sell that well at all.

hlisle says:

This reminds me much of the BMW Z3 Coup... Lambo had their SUV - why not Ferrari?

santiagofdz says:

08:44 AM, 01/21/11

@vhoyles

But everybody who's driven the M coupe says wonderful things about it.

I like that Ferrari did a shooting brake concept. If anybody ever buys one and is so disgusted with it it HAS to get rid of it, drop me a line, I wont mind.

I agree with the rest of you, it looks like the BMW M Coupe. This thing has fail written all over it, but I definitely commend them for thinking outside the box and trying something different. They should have made the cabin just a little longer. I think most people in this category will choose an all wheel drive Panamara instead.

igeekone says:

It's a fat f@c# Ferrari. The California, then this, is a disgrace to the Ferrari brand. Soon we'll see a Ferrari badged SUV and minivan, oh joy. Better solution would be using the Maserati name because it's a GT oriented brand.

jeepsrt says:

09:00 AM, 01/21/11

FF=Fast Fail...Hate it, if was anything other than a Ferrari it would be a joke.

herrstreet says:

09:02 AM, 01/21/11

I like it. I don't know it I'd buy one, were I rich enough, I think the Porsche is more useful with the extra doors. It reminds more of a Toyota prototype from the 90's that had a similar roofline, than it does the M coupe.

If it's for ski trips one wonders what on earth the tires will be. It's not likely to find Blizzaks on a Ferrari :-)

altimadude05 says:

09:04 AM, 01/21/11

igeekone -- I beg to differ. Ferrari is putting out products that will appeal to a wider range of customers. The California appeals to those that want a folding hard top convertible. This will appeal to those that want a backseat and AWD. All Ferraris still have Ferrari-like performance figures, and I'm willing to bet that the owners who bought them are glad they can get what they want and still have the prancing horse still on the nose.

If that is disgracing the brand, then look around....how many brands aren't disgraced?

mrlsneed says:

Forget the looks (which I think will soon grow on all of us). This is a V12, four wheel drive FERRARI!!!! Who cares what the thing looks like at the moment. How the hell does it drive man! Somehow I'm thinking that that the Italia front end styling is a strong hint that this car also draws inspiration from the 458's performance. Even though this car has only 2 doors, this is a direct response to the Rapide, and Panamera done Ferrari's way...with a bit of BMW's M Coupe's styling thrown in the profile, but never mind that.

traven72 says:

Picturing the FF with a roof rack & rear bike rack... just a little vomit in the lower throat (it went back down).

First production Ferrari to accommodate 4 full size adults. Who are they kidding? If you can afford this car: your spoiled kids drive Land Rovers & wouldn't be caught dead in the back seat of Daddies Ferrari, & your friends (the ones you vacation with) haven't climbed into a cramped back seat in +30 yrs (limos don't count).

People of means (Ferrari owners) can afford a lot of overindulgence & freedom. When you can afford a lot of overindulgence & freedom you don't climb into the back seat of someone elses car, EVER.

yourbestfriend says:

09:24 AM, 01/21/11

The idea is interesting. But I just don't like the front end at all. The 612 was such a clean looking car and this just... isn't. Insane powertrain though.

fuhteng says:

09:42 AM, 01/21/11

"aims to attract a new kind of "all-roads, all-seasons" Ferrari customer." Right, because so many people are going to drive a Ferrari flagship (costing what, $350k?) in the snow.

I appreciate the performance aspects of AWD, but please, we all know this thing is never going to see the snow except for Ferrari commercials.

sinna46 says:

09:43 AM, 01/21/11

Just comparing it to the 612, I think I like the look of the front end of this car more. It has a kind of reptilian look similar to the 458. I have to say I miss the styling of the 456GT on the big Ferrari's though the 612 never did it for me.

As far as comparisons to the M Coupe, how can you miss it, it has the same big hips in the back and even vaguely similar 5 spoke wheels.

Not sure if it will be appealing to traditional Ferrari owners on looks alone, but a V12 with 4 wheel drive will probably bring in some new less traditional buyers too.

xorbe says:

09:47 AM, 01/21/11

Yes, it reads like a PR. What did you expect? All anyone has is a few pics and a blurb from Ferrari. Waiting for more photos!

mrlsneed says:

Car companies spend millions to analyze the market and determine the demand for a particular vehicle. They spend millions more to develop vehicles and produce them to market. Individuals who are college educated, have years of experience in the auto industry oversee these processes. They know what they are doing. Ferrari is not selling 19k Kia's, they are selling 100k plus automobiles. They know what they are doing.

cr_driver says:

sharvan456 says:

roar02ram says:

10:15 AM, 01/21/11

+ to the BMW M Coupe & Z3 Coupe references.

That said, I liked that car, & I like this one, too - both the styling & the fact that they chose to incorporate revolutionary tech with a revolutionary design. Plus it's a little more visually interesting than the 612, which really was far too boring for a Ferrari...

coolb944 says:

10:16 AM, 01/21/11

The side profile and back work fairly well I think. Attractive even.

Maybe it's that odd "looking down" angle they've got on the front end picture, but good God, it looks like they took a page from the Mazda 3 styling book there and tacked on an egg-crate grille and 458-esque angry lights to make it a Ferrari. The front really looks like a Japanese manga version of what a Ferrari would look like. I really hope it works from a different angle.

blueguydotcom says:

10:22 AM, 01/21/11

Wow, that's magnificently ugly. Seriously, a giant step in a direction that can only be called: oops, I was drunk when I sent this to the product manager.

Well, Porsche should be happy as their egg-shaped Panamera is a styling step up from the Red Converse Ferrari.

greenpony says:

Shouldn't it be called the QQ? Or is this only for English-speaking markets?

deagle13 says:

10:39 AM, 01/21/11

Damn - I thought Ferrari had gotten their styling mojo back with the 458, and now they dump this abomination on us. Though I generally like hatchbacks (I drive a Mazda 3), the proportions of the FF look all wrong to me. But, then again, I'm far from the target demographic for this thing so Ferrari couldn't care less what I think about it.

brian_k says:

10:46 AM, 01/21/11

Whoa. That is ugly. Really ugly. As for the notion of "If I could ony ever have one car..." argument, I would pick an Audi R8 V10 convertible. And on the 1 or 2 days per year I need to haul stuff from Home Depot or whatever, something tells me I can find a buddy with an SUV who wouldn't mind swapping cars for a couple hours. That is why I don't understand SUVs. Why give up handling, fuel economy, ride, looks, etc for 364 days per year so you can haul stuff for 1 day per year?

akitadog says:

10:52 AM, 01/21/11

Yaaayyyy! Hatchback supercar!!! An actual modicum of practicality in a Ferrari. Who would've thought. I dig hatchbacks in general, and it looks like the top 2 percent are starting to as well.

sabastian says:

11:09 AM, 01/21/11

I'm not crazy about the Joker grin, but the whole shooting brake thing is fantastic. I wish more car makers would bring out stuff like this.

iskch says:

Agree. Looks like the BMW Z3 M Coupe. I bet their European Alps clientele requested this option for years.

sabastian says:

"Well, Porsche should be happy as their egg-shaped Panamera is a styling step up from the Red Converse Ferrari."

Haha, maybe that's why I like the Ferrari. I'm wearing red Converse sneakers right now.

pika206 says:

11:34 AM, 01/21/11

Weird, spending 150k on a suv that can't really do any SUV stuff, like get dirty, bang through rocks and brush, or haul around the family dog.

Why aren't premium cars coming with scratch proof paint and nozzels that pop out and wash the whole car, not just the headlights?

geez, luxury is never having to wash a car or fix a door ding but the car still looking brand new. it's driving right over potholes without even worrying about it messing up the alignment. I would rather have the power sliding doors from the honda odessey as the driver and passenger door so that it's easier to get in an out even if some douch bag parks too close.

tib2006 says:

At first I was going to ask Ferrari where the third door was. But than I remembered that...."ahhh!" this is a Ferrari, not a Hyundai Veloster. I have to admit that it does sorta take on that profile, although with even better execution. What I am not sure of though is the all wheel drive. Is it really neccesary? It should at least be optional. All wheel drive generally doesn't increase handling prowess, it just adds uneeded pork and does little to enhance the driving experience anyway. Who takes a Ferrari out in the snow? Or a rainy day for that matter? Overall though, it looks cool.

bestjinjo says:

10:07 PM, 01/21/11

I am not a huge fan of the design because I associate Ferrari with uber supercars (and I never liked 456GT or the 612). However, most likely Ferrari collected feedback from 456/612 owners regarding what they would like in their next GT Ferrari and this car is the answer.

Wow, no sense of history on the IL, is there? This car doesn't emulate the Z3 coupe, it emulates the car the Z3 coupe was copying: the Ferrari 250 SWB "Bread Van," a race car with this distinctive shape: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3013/2721191908_3fb33f3ddb.jpg

What this and the Z3 coupe will likely have in common is becoming "cult classics."

I can't wait till I am at the Geneva Show this year to check this out up close and personal. Personally, I think Ferrari did a fantastic job. Others may feel that they have "lost theri soul" or whatever, but I dont know how a bodystyle dictates a brands true passion or mission. At the end of the day a Ferrari is looked upon as a performance icon, something you KNOW is fast, handles great, sounds amazing, etc. Styling is always subjective no matter how you slice it. We may all find the likes of the Audi R8 or Ferrari 250 GTO or Porsche Carrera GT beautiful, but there are alot of people who aren't feeling either one of those cars. And then there are the buyers who never once glanced at Porsche and once the Cayenne was released, love the brand. Basically, to me nothing can deter from a brands imagine unless it doesn't match their overall quality and perfomance. Is the Cayenne the "porsche" of SUV's? Yea, pretty much. It can embarass dedicated sports cars on a track. Will this be the "ferrari" of grand tourers/hatchback/4-seater... yea, you can bet on that. Im sure seeing as how I am not a CEO of a major exotic car brand, that Ferrari has this under control and knows exactly who their clientele are and what they want. Many of them have multiple Ferraris, so having the likes of the new 458 and wanting something for work or road trips or family outings, whatever the case. This isn't out of the norm. Im glad to see the manufacturers as of late starting to push the envelope. Because for a minute there everything was the same and we complained and demanded "outside the box" thinking, new designs, all-wheel drive, praticality and perfomance, room for 4, prestige, so on and so forth. Its just been delivered. I'll take one in black.

I love hatchbacks generally, but the words "Ferrari AWD hatchback" just don't go together. Ferraris are supposed to be beautiful, fast, passionate, and impractical. AWD hatchbacks, on the other hand, are meant to be more like rally cars: rugged and utilitarian. Yes, they can be fast (STI hatch, Golf R) but very different in feel and perception (and target buyer) from a low-slung Ferrari.

Ferrari is trying to merge the best qualities of both together, but I'm skeptical whether it can be done and whether there is even a market for this kind of car.

For those who don't remember what their car looked like, it basically had the same side profile as this car (and the old Z3 coupe). A profile that so resembles the upside-down profile of the male appendage that it looks completely ridiculous.
